Former F1 boss Ecclestone criticises current investments in the U.S.

Former Formula One boss, Bernie Ecclestone has criticised the F1 owners Liberty Media due to their investments in the United States (U.S.).

F1 scheduled three races in the U.S. this season.The first one was in Miami in May, while races in Austin and the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix were to take place later in 2023.

Ecclestone told the Münchner Merkur media group on Monday that the race in Miami made it clear that “the F1 promoters are fixated on the US market.

“The presentation is more similar to an Oscar ceremony than to major sports events.

“I don’t know if I should laugh or cry. It was a joke,’’ he said.

He accused the U.S. mass media company Liberty Media of desperately doing everything for the U.S. supporters.

“Even, if it means risking through burning the roots.’’

F1 gained a thousands of new fans because, among other things, the popular Netflix show “Drive to Survive’’.

Therefore, the new bosses were trying to make the racing series more accessible and keep the interest alive, especially via social networks – which never played a role during Ecclestone’s era. (dpa/NAN)
