Four persons lost their lives in an early morning crash involving four vehicles on the Ushafa-Bwari Road in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday. It was gathered that three males and one female died, while 13 others were injured in the accident, which involved a commercial bus; a 2001 model Mazda 232 car; a 2004 model Toyota Corolla and a Mercedes Benz car. Court revokes Kalu’s bail for traveling without permission (Guardian)

For travelling to Germany without permission, Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos yesterday revoked the bail granted to the former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu. The court ordered him to submit himself and his passport to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) within 24 hours after his return to the country upon the conclusion of his medical treatment abroad. The Special Presidential Investigation Panel for Recovery of Public Property, SPIPRPP, yesterday, said it granted administrative bail to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, after he developed high blood pressure in detention. In a chat with Vanguard, Chairman of the SPIPRPP, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, who confirmed Uzodinma’s temporary release on bail, said the lawmaker, who was accused of complicity in alleged $12 million contract fraud, pleaded to be allowed to return for questioning today. Members of the Abia state Disengaged Non Indigene Workers have threatened to drag Abia state government to court if their disengagement from service was not reversed or their entitlements paid. In a letter to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu through the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, titled “Pre-action notice with respect to the transfer of non Indigenes in the Abia state public service”, counsel to the disengaged workers, C.C Okere noted that Abia State Government has despite promises, refused to recall the workers or pay their entitlements after years of service.  Read more

A’Ibom rice farmers lament FG’s refusal to release funds (Vanguard)

Over 3,000 rice farmers in Akwa Ibom State under the Federal Government Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, scheme, are enraged that government had not provided funds to enable them clear their rice fields and transplant seeds from the nurseries. Some of the rice farmers, who spoke to NDV, last week, said they were elated when the federal government through RIFAN in Abuja brought the scheme, promising to assist them with inputs and empower them financially to transplant from nurseries to their rice fields according to clusters. Tanzanian authorities have deployed the military to buy cashew nuts from farmers to solve a row over prices. President John Magufuli had given traders a Monday deadline to buy the crops at government-approved rates. On 15 October, 11 civilians were killed by assailants on a motorcycle in Telly in Central Mali’s Mopti region. This attack occurred barely two days after Prime Minister Soumeylou Boubèye Maïga visited the district to affirm the return of the state to this region. Growing insecurity since 2012 had led to the withdrawal of some state agents (such as local administrators and judges) from the area. SFU re-arraigns Badagry prince for defrauding late father’s estate (Punch)

The Special Fraud Unit of the Nigeria Police Force has re-arraigned a prince of Kweme Land in Badagry, Semasa James, for allegedly defrauding the estate of his late father by leasing out some buildings to Ecobank Plc. Semasa, who had been earlier arraigned on two counts of stealing and forgery, was re-arraigned alongside one Afolabi Kazeem on Monday before the Lagos State Special Offences Court on seven counts of conspiracy, cheating, stealing, forging of company resolution and fraudulent disposal of trust property. Father discovers two children dead inside freezer (Punch)

A father, Michael Ede, has told the police that he woke up to find his two children, Emma, 6, and Darasimi, 4, dead inside a deep freezer at their home in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the father of two and his children went to bed around midnight on Sunday only for Michael to find the kids dead around 2am when he woke up.
