Friday at the 20th Lagos Book & Art Festival -Gabriella Opara

The Lagos Book and Art Festival (LABAF) goes on today with even more activities lined up to delight guests at Freedom Park, Lagos.

With the weekend here, activities at LABAF get more engaging. Beginning with a mentorship session at 11am, Actress Kate Henshaw will guide students through the importance of reading while encouraging them to aim for higher achievements.

Notable poet and activist, Odia Ofeimun, will be discussing his vision for his country in a one-on-one discussion with Ben Tomoloju. The interview will take place at the Kongi Harvest Art Gallery of the former colonial prison by 1pm.

Following closely after that is the interactive session set to hold at the same venue by 3pm around the theme ‘Leap Frog into modernity’. It will involve book readings and several discussions. Speakers include: Luke Onyekakeyah, Jimanze Egos-Alowes, Bayo Olupohunda, Layiwola Adeniji and Adekunle Adeniyi. It is to be moderated by Martin Oloja.

At 6pm, authors and readers will converge at the Food Court to discuss the pleasures of writing and reading. New books of different genres will also be read and reviewed, such books include; Lives of Great Men, Lakiriboto Chronicles and more. The assembly will be moderated by Chuma Nwokolo.

Veteran filmmaker, Tunde Kelani, will present the prize to the winner of the third edition of Ken Saro-Wiwa Prize for Review, which this year focuses on the review of Kelani’s movies. Time for this is 7pm. The 20th edition of LABAF is dedicated to Kelani, alongside artist, Kolade Oshinowo.

Thirty minutes after the award ceremony, The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead and To St Patrick by Eghosa Imasuen will be read and performed by both authors, respectively.

LABAF will conclude the night with a TGIF fiesta, merging music with food. Music performances by various bands will take place at the Freedom Park Food Court by 9pm.
