Fuel shortage hits Lagos as scarcity bites harder in Abuja, Oyo (Vanguard)

There were indications, weekend, that the fuel shortage noticed in Lagos and its environs would worsen, as independent marketers said they have not been supplied for days.

An investigation by Vanguard showed that the shortage was first noticed on Saturday as some filling stations refused to sell the product on the outskirts of Lagos.

Yesterday, the scarcity spread to the metropolis, with only a few major marketers selling, while the outlets of many independent marketers remained shut.

In a telephone interview with Vanguard, yesterday, National Operations Controller, IPMAN, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, attributed the present scarcity to inadequate supply, explaining that his members had not been getting supplies in the past three days. Read more

Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) in the continuous campaign against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), has inducted members into ‘KINGS CLUB’ across Lagos.

The state Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, who performed the induction, at Oregun road Ikeja, said it has become a call for all and that Nigerians have a role to play to stop SGBV.

“The kings club initiative is essential for the re-orientation of young students and their peers to avoid violence in all forms, particularly bullying and body shaming. This will also encourage the young students to speak up and report to the nearest authority in the case of acts of inappropriate behaviour,” he said. Read more

3 Ogun fraudsters who target Lagos passengers arrested (Tribune)

Three members of a syndicate who defrauded residents of different parts of Lagos posing as passengers and driver have been arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and police in the state.

Members of the gang reside in Ogun State but operate in Lagos where they felt that their faces might not be easily recognised.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that the modus operandi of the gang is to go to any part of the state, pick unsuspecting passengers and draw them into their conversation before defrauding them.

It was also gathered that the gang members usually pretend as if they are strangers and one of them will convince the passenger to give their plan a trial.

The image-maker in charge of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest of the suspects to the Nigerian Tribune in a statement he signed on Saturday. Read more

Police arrest couple for chaining 7-year-old son’s leg with padlock (Sun)

The Imo State police command has arrested one Mr Chimezie Nwosu and his wife, Victoria for maltreating their 7-year-old son, Kelechi Nwosu, whose leg was chained and locked with a big padlock to prevent him from moving around.

Spokesperson of the State police, Michael Abattam said men of the command had acted on the report of a good Samaritan of the maltreatment of Kelechi and his other elder brother, Destiny, 11, and Chinemerie, 9, by their stepmother, Victoria, residing at World Bank, Owerri.

A viral video from social media had earlier captured the children being punished by their stepmother while their father showed no concern for their plight at the weekend.

The voice on the video also claimed that the children’s stepmother responsible for chaining Chimezie has been starving them and making them wash clothes while her own children go to school. Read more

Filmmaker Paul Haggis has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Italy. 

The 69-year-old, who is best known for directing the Oscar-winning film Crash and writing the script for James Bond movie Casino Royale, was allegedly detained on Sunday, Italian news media has reported. 

Haggis was in Italy to attend a film festival that is set to begin in the tourist town of Ostuni, Puglia on Tuesday. 

Italian publications and agencies such as LaPresse are said to have released statements from prosecutors in the nearby city of Brindisi, stating how they were investigating allegations from a ‘young foreign woman’ who claims she was forced to have ‘non-consensual’ sexual relations over two days. Four months of brutal fighting in Ukraine appear to be straining the morale of troops on both sides, prompting desertions and rebellion against officers’ orders, British defense officials said Sunday. NATO’s chief warned the war could drag on for “years.”

“Combat units from both sides are committed to intense combat in the Donbas and are likely experiencing variable morale,” Britain’s defense ministry said in its daily assessment of the war.

“Ukrainian forces have likely suffered desertions in recent weeks,” the assessment said, but added that “Russian morale highly likely remains especially troubled.”

Mercedes Team principal Wolff slams rivals in car bouncing row ahead of Canadian grand prix (Eurosport)

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has labelled rivals ‘pitiful’ in row over bouncing cars.

In a meeting with other team principals on Saturday at the Canadian Grand Prix, Wolff clashed with Red Bull’s Christian Horner and Ferrari’s Mattia Binotto.

The trio are at odds over a controversial FIA intervention following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as Horner believes it is wrong to penalise teams that have managed to control both porpoising and bouncing.

Mercedes also regard Binotto to have made procedural objections to attempts that could see changes made to cars at this stage. Read more
