Gang war in Mushin leaves many injured, shops razed (Guardian)
In what looked like a scene from a movie, a gang war between two warring cult groups on Asaoku Street, Mushin area of Lagos State yesterday shattered the serenity of a Sunday morning, leaving many persons injured and some lock-up shops containing goods worth millions of naira burnt to ashes. While the circumstances that led to the fracas are not yet known, eyewitnesses claimed the incident might not be unconnected to a show of superiority between the rival gang members. Findings by The Guardian at the scene revealed that tension has been brewing for some days with matters coming to a head yesterday after the clash between the two rival gangs, which left in its wake, tears, blood and arson. Resign since you can’t fix economy, Atiku tells Buhari (Punch)
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign for admitting on Friday that the nation’s economy was in bad shape. Buhari reportedly made the confession during his meeting with the 36 governors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday. In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu, on Sunday, Atiku said the President’s confession that the economy was in bad shape was not only a ploy to attract the sympathy of Nigerians but also aimed at getting a soft landing. NEMA cautions against fire disasters, urges people to marry IDPs (Guardian)
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has alerted the public to be wary of fire, conflict, flood and other emergency related disasters. Head of Gombe Operations Office, Hajia Amina Ahmad, gave the warning in Bauchi at a stakeholders meeting on Sunday. Ahmad, who is controlling Bauchi State, also enjoined members of the public to give the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) maximum support and ensure they get married to them to reduce the trauma they are going through. She said disaster is everybody’s business while urging residents to desist from building structures on the waterways. Read more
We’ve dealt mortal damage to Boko Haram — Military (Punch)
The Nigerian military has said it had dealt a mortal damage to the Boko Haram insurgents in the latest attack on Gudumbali. The insurgents who had always gained upper hand in the battle of Gudumbali in the past, according to a military source, met their Waterloo when they invaded the town on Friday evening. The source said the military were well prepared for the onslaught and were able to disperse the insurgents. Read more
Saudis condemn US Senate ‘interference’ (BBC)
Saudi Arabia has denounced US Senate resolutions to end US military aid for a Riyadh-led war in Yemen and to blame the country’s crown prince for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Saudi foreign ministry described the move as “interference” based on “untrue allegations”. Thursday’s US resolutions are largely symbolic and unlikely to become law. But they sent a warning to President Donald Trump about US lawmakers’ anger towards Saudi policies. Read more
Lagos finishes fourth at 19th National Sports Festival (Guardian)
After a very excruciating 10 days of competitions at the 19th National Sports Festival, Abuja 2018, Team Lagos led by the Chairman Lagos Sports Commission (LSSC), Dr. Kweku Tandoh, has finished fourth in overall position. Team Lagos holding strictly to its principle of youth sports development, amassed a total 146 medals with a breakdown showing 36 gold, 37 silver and 73 bronze the biggest haul among all the 36 states that participated. Super Eagles defensive midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi has reiterated his commitment to the national team, saying he is always happy to play for the Eagles. The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has condemned Niger State unsportsmanlike behaviour during the final match between Niger and Delta states at the 19th National Sport festival in Abuja. HFN’s President, Samuel Ocheho described the disruption of the final led by the Niger State Director of Sports, Alhaji Baba Sheshi, as disgraceful and shameful. Decomposing body of woman found in Ebonyi hotel room (Guardian)
The police in Ebonyi State said they have discovered the body of a yet to be identified middle-aged woman in a hotel room in Abakaliki, the state capital. Spokesperson of the police in the state, Loveth Odah, stated this yesterday. She said the body has deep cuts on the chest and neck and has been deposited in a mortuary. According to the spokesman, it was discovered at Crown Garden Hotel located along the ever-busy Afikpo road in the capital city. Read more
Commercial driver beaten to death with charm in Ondo (Punch)
Arigidi Akoko in the Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, was on Saturday, thrown into mourning as a commercial driver, identified as Akeem Olanipekun, was allegedly killed by some hoodlums in the town. It was gathered that the 50-year-old man was beaten to death with a charm during a fight, which ensued between him and the alleged killers at the Imo area of the town. According to an eyewitness, the deceased accompanied his friend, who operates a rental business in the community, to erect canopies for a ceremony at the Imo quarters when the fight began. Read more
