Germany, China to discuss climate, economy

The governments of Germany and China were scheduled to discuss further cooperation between their two countries on Tuesday in Berlin.

The talks would be led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Premier Li Qiang.

The main topic would be the fight against climate change and the associated restructuring of the economy.

But the talks were also likely to focus on trade relations and the Russian war against Ukraine, in which China was trying to mediate.

The German government regularly holds consultations with particularly close partners or countries that are especially important to it.

On the Chinese side, a total of 10 government representatives would take part, on the German side there are nine.

As usual, Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping is not taking part.

In his own words, Scholz expected a very important working meeting from the government consultations.

Li said after his arrival in Germany that he hoped for a deepening of cooperation and a “strong positive signal for stable international industrial and supply chains and world peace and prosperity.’’

In the afternoon, Scholz and Li are due to take part in an economic forum.

The Chinese delegation then plans to travel on to Munich, where talks with companies are planned. (dpa/NAN)
