Elizabeth Olsen addresses criticism facing Marvel Films (Deadline)

Elizabeth Olsen and the character of Wanda Maximoff aka The Scarlet Witch, has become the darling of the Marvel cinematic universe, thanks to Disney+ show WandaVision.

She’s been in six Marvel properties so far (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) but in her interview with The Independent, the actress reveals she didn’t think she would make it this far. “I only signed on to do a couple movies, so it continues to be a surprise when they want to use me for more projects,” she says, adding: “I’ve been confused by how lucky I got with them wanting to make WandaVision.”

Prior to Multiverse of Madness, Olsen was used to working on ensemble projects, and working solo on WandaVision, Disney’s first television show, made her nervous. “When we were doing press for WandaVision, I was mortified because it was the first show from the Marvel universe. There was this total fear, and now I have this pressure all over again connecting to Doctor Strange. I just didn’t have it as part of those ensemble films.” Olsen admits that this even extends to viewing the end product. “I’ll see it eventually,” she says.

I wonder what somebody in her position feels about the criticism directed Marvel’s way in recent years. Most controversially, Martin Scorsese described MCU films as being “closer to theme parks” than cinema, while The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola described them as “prototypes made over and over and over again to look different”. Olsen says it’s when people “make them seem like a lesser type of art” that she gets frustrated. Read more

The ‘jockstrap’ that revolutionised women’s sports (BBC)

The modern day sports bra began life as a jockstrap.

It was the summer of 1977 and Lisa Lindahl, a University of Vermont graduate student, was swept up in the running boom, jogging 30 miles every week.

The running was straightforward. Her underwear was not.

“The only uncomfortable part was no adequate breast support,” she said.

Lindahl, then 28, tried binding herself with an elastic bandage, and going braless, before eventually settling on a regular bra, one size too small. The struggle for chest support fed a running joke with her sister: why isn’t there a jockstrap for women? Read more

FIFA 23 will be last instalment of game made by EA Sports (BelfastLive)

EA Sports have confirmed that this year’s FIFA 23 will be the last instalment of the popular game it makes. Video games heavyweight Electronic Arts is ending its licence deal with football’s governing body after 30 years.

EA has decided to end one of gaming’s most lucrative brands due to the cost of the licence, with the company set to produce a new football game with different in-purchase options under the name EA Sports FC. Fifa says they plan to release a rival title, saying in quotes reported by the BBC: “The Fifa name is the only global, original title.”

However EA Sports says players will only miss two things for its new football offerings – the FIFA name and a World Cup piece of content every four years. The first Fifa game made by EA Sports was launched in 1993, with several versions of the game selling in excess of 10million copies.

David Jackson, vice president at EA Sports, told the BBC that the studio thinks it’s time to move in a different direction in order to build a “brand for the future”. He added: “The world of football and the world of entertainment are changing, and they clash within our product. In the future our players will demand of us the ability to be more expensive in that offering. Read more
