Residents of Ajao Estate in the Isolo area of Lagos State are in mourning following the death of a mother of four, Mrs Chibuzor Balogun.

Chibuzor, whose 14-year-old son, Uche, said was a little above 30 years, died at their residence, No. 2 Raji Aliu Street, off the Airport Road, Ajao Estate, last Wednesday.

According to Uche, his mother had been complaining of general weakness of the body for some days and the family thought that it was a minor thing. Read more

How rising seas may wipe off Lagos, others by 2050 (Guardian)

The dividends accruing to Nigeria from its 853-kilometer coastline may be reversed as a new report warns that rising seas could affect three times more people and submerge some of the world’s coastal cities by 2050.

Research by Climate Central, a science organisation based in New Jersey, and published in the journal, Nature Communications, shows that 300 million people currently live in areas that become flooded at least once a year, and that half of these places would be below the high tide line by mid-century. The scientists developed a more accurate way of calculating land elevation based on satellite readings, a standard way of estimating the effects of sea-level rise over large areas, and found that the previous statistics were far too optimistic. Fire guts Lagos factory, Balogun, Dosunmu market buildings (Punch)

Fire gutted a chin-chin factory belonging to Didaskalos Vado Ventures and buildings in the Balogun and Dosunmu markets in the Bariga and Lagos Island areas of Lagos State on Tuesday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that an electric spark was responsible for the factory inferno, while the cause of the fire in the two markets, where goods worth millions of naira were destroyed, had yet to be ascertained.

At the chin-chin factory, the inferno was said to have started at the production section around 7.30am and was extinguished by emergency responders, including personnel of the state fire service, environmental health officers, neighbourhood watch officials, men of the state police command and youths in the community. Fintiri pays minimum wage (Nation)

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri on Tuesday directed implementation of the N30,000 national minimum wage for state and local government workers.

He said the implementation is to take effect from this month.

The governor gave the directive while launching the construction and rehabilitation of roads in Toungo, headquarters of Toungo Local Government.

Fintiri stressed that his administration would pay the minimum wage as he promised, following conclusion of negotiations between the government and Labour union. Read more

‘Cancer centre ready next July’ (Nation)

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on Tuesdayhinted that the multibillion Naira Kano Cancer Centre at Giginyu in Kano metropolis would be ready for inauguration by July 2020.

He said: “Already, the government has advertised for expression of interest for the procurement of high-tech oncology, imaging, emergency and laboratory equipment, as well as power facilities, hospital and office furniture.

“Professionals are assessing the documents and due process will be followed in the contract award for procurement of the equipment and facilities.” Read more

Ghanaian court remands 22-year-old Nigerian for allegedly impregnating minor (Guardian)

Accra Circuit Court has remanded a 22-year-old Nigerian in prison for allegedly impregnating an underaged girl at Agbogboloshie.

Edah Great, a trader, charged with defilement, had his plea reserved, according to a report on Monday by Ghanaian Times.

Police prosecutor, Kofi Atimbire, prayed the court to remand the accused person to enable the police conduct further investigations into the matter.

The judge, Rita Abrokwah-Doko, granted the prosecution’s prayer and ordered that Mr. Great be remanded in police custody until November 8. Read more

US Democrats have made gains in key state elections, in what is seen as a blow to President Donald Trump.

Democrat Andy Beshear claimed victory in Kentucky’s governor vote, after a tight race in the conservative-leaning state.

Meanwhile, Democrats seized full control of the legislature in Virginia for the first time in over 20 years.

The results are being viewed as a gauge of the political mood ahead of next year’s presidential election.

However, Republicans managed to hold onto power in the Mississippi governor vote, following a closely-fought race. Read more

Gay couple threatened with deportation ‘because relationship is not real’ (Metro)

A gay couple is fighting to stay in the UK after escaping homophobic persecution from their families in Africa.

Unondjamo Kavala, 27, and boyfriend Mbiripipo Tjizoo, 22, fled Namibia earlier this year and claimed asylum as soon as they landed in the UK.

But Mr Kavala was told Home Office officials do not believe their long-term relationship is ‘genuine’ and his claim for asylum was rejected.

He said he tried travelling around Namibia with his boyfriend but his family would ‘hunt him down’. Read more

Akwa Ibom begins preparation for Eagles/Squirrels’ AFCON qualifier (Guardian)

The Akwa Ibom State government has affirmed its readiness to next week’s African Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Squirrels of Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

The Akwa State government has also inaugurated 30 sporting associations as a move to improve the fortunes of the state in next year’s sports festival in Benin.

The four other NFF officials joined as co-defendants in the case are secretary-general, Sunusi Mohammed; 1st vice president, Seyi Akinwumi; 2nd vice president, Shehu Dikko and an executive member, Yusuff Fresh.

The case which was instituted in May 2019 by the now disbanded Special Presidential Investigation Panel on the Recovery of Public Property, involved the alleged misappropriation of the sums of $8.4m and N4bn belonging to the NFF by the five defendants. Read more

Former Green Eagles winger, Adegoke Adelabu wants the law to descend on those who raised the false alarm of corruption against the president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick and four other officials of the football house.

Pinnick and Seyi Akinwunmi (1st Vice President), Shehu Dikko (2nd Vice President), Mohammed Sanusi (General Secretary) and Ahmed Yusuf (Executive Committee member) were yesterday discharged and acquitted from the alleged $8.4million, N4 billion corruption charges in a case brought by the Special Presidential Investigation Panel, SPIP.

The panel, headed by Okon Obono-Obla, who is now on the run to avoid prosecution by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences Commission, ICPC, had filed a 16–count charge against Pinnick and the NFF’s top four over alleged misappropriation of the sums of $8.4 million and N4 billion, conflict of interest and non-declaration of assets. Liverpool Carabao Cup tie with Aston Villa unchanged despite Fifa Club World Cup clash (BBC)

Liverpool will field different teams in two separate competitions within 24 hours after the EFL announced the date of their Carabao Cup quarter-final with Aston Villa will not be changed.

The Reds will play at Villa on 17 December and will compete in the Fifa Club World Cup in Qatar the following day.

Manager Jurgen Klopp had ruled out the prospect of playing both fixtures.
