The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has decried President Muhammadu Buhari for his failure stop the killing of Hauwa Liman and other aids workers that were abducted by Boko Haram terrorists. HURIWA said by virtue of municipal and international humanitarian laws binding on all persons, authorities and heads of governments, President Muhammadu Buhari has no excuses for his administration’s failure to arrest the situation. EFCC obtains court order to detain Fayose for two weeks …ex-gov to sue anti-graft agency (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has obtained a remand order from a Federal Capital Territory High Court to keep former Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State for two weeks, The PUNCH can confirm. The remand order, it was learnt, is subject to renewal which implies that Fayose could spend longer than two weeks in custody. Read more

Ibori loses appeal against UK graft conviction (Punch)

James Ibori, on Wednesday, lost an appeal against his conviction in London after being jailed in Britain for laundering public funds through British banks and properties. The former governor of Delta State had pleaded guilty in a London court in 2012 to 10 counts of fraud and money-laundering involving sums amounting to at least 50 million pounds ($66m). Read more

Missing General: Army hands 13 suspects to police (Nation)

The Army yesterday presented 13 suspects arrested in connection with missing Maj.-Gen. Idris Alkali (retd) to reporters in Jos. Brig.-Gen. Umar Muhammed, Garrison Commander, 3 Division, Nigeria Army, Rukuba, near Jos, told reporters that the suspects would be handed over to the police for full investigation. Trainee policemen assault Ilorin NBA chair, others (Punch)

Some students of the Nigeria Police Training School, in the Challenge area of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Wednesday assaulted the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ilorin branch, Mohammed Akande, and two other lawyers, Mr Luqman  Olanrewaju and Dr Mustapha Aduwa. Gunmen kill two policemen, driver (Nation)

GUNMEN yesterday killed two mobile policemen, who were on patrol on Nnamdi Azikiwe bypass, Kaduna. The Nation learnt the incident occurred about 5am when the gunmen fired at the policemen on sight.  Five were injured. A driver was also killed. Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the incident. It said detectives had been sent to the area. Spokesman Yakubu Sabo said the slain policemen were on foot when the incident occurred. Read more

India’s Junior External Affairs Minister, Mobashar Akbar, on Wednesday resigned over alleged sexual assaults preferred against him by 35 female journalists. The former junior minister said in a statement that he would challenge the accusations leveled against him in a law court. Following allegations of sexual assault by women journalists who worked with him when he was an editor, Akbar has filed a defamation case in a Delhi Court against one of those women journalists. Tesla secures land in Shanghai for first factory outside US (Independent)

Electric auto brand Tesla Inc. said it signed an agreement Wednesday to secure land in Shanghai for its first factory outside the United States, pushing ahead with development despite mounting U.S.-Chinese trade tensions. Tesla, based on Palo Alto, California, announced plans for the Shanghai factory in July after the Chinese government said it would end restrictions on full foreign ownership of electric vehicle makers to speed up industry development. Mother and her four children electrocuted in Niger (Punch)

A mother, Asmau Shehu; and her four children — Yusuf, Rabiat, Ummul and Hadi — have been electrocuted in Anguwan Sarkin Hausawa, Bosso Local Government Area of Niger State. The Public Relations Officer, State Emergency Management Agency, Malam Ibrahim Husssaini, confirmed the tragedy in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Wednesday. Husssaini said that Asmau and three of her children died immediately during a power surge, while the fourth one later died at the General Hospital, Minna. Read more

EFCC arraigns yahoo boy in Lagos (Punch)

A 25-year-old man, Samson Olujobi, was on Wednesday arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on two charges bordering on engaging in computer phishing and fraudulent possession of the sum of 400 dollars. Olujobi was arraigned before Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court, in Lagos. The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Read more
