Man flees after allegedly abducting, raping Lagos fashion designer at gunpoint (Punch)

A man, Babatunde Qudus, is on the run after allegedly kidnapping and raping a fashion designer in Lagos State.

It was gathered that the victim was on her way home on August 10, 2020, when she was allegedly accosted around 7.30pm by Qudus, who was in a car in the Mushin area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Qudus allegedly threatened the 21-year-old victim with a gun and ordered her into the vehicle.

The victim’s friend, @ehival, who narrated the incident in a series of tweets and called for the suspect’s arrest, stated that Qudus and his driver conveyed the victim from Mushin to the Omole area of the state, where the man allegedly raped her.

The friend, however, accused cops at the Olosan Police Station, where the matter was reported, of compromising the case. Read more

Court remands truck driver, owner over ‘involuntary manslaughter’ (Vanguard)

A Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere Monday remanded in Police custody a truck driver, Sodiq Okanlanwan, alongside the truck owner, Wasiu Lekan, who allegedly crushed three people to death.

Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu – Igihile made the order following Okanlanwan and Lekan’s arraignment for alleged involuntary manslaughter.

The duo is facing a three-count charge filed against them by the Lagos State government.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 26, 2020.

He said Okanlanwan, on July 26, at about 4 pm, on Oshodi Expressway, in Ilasamaja, ran over the victims, with his vehicle.

Onigbanjo said the defendant unlawfully killed one Nnaekpe Chima Victor, Chidinma Ajoku and Daniel Okwuoge, by running over them with his Truck. Read more

Mompha sues EFCC for N5m over fresh arrest (Punch)

Internet personality, Ismaila Mustapha, alias Mompha, who is facing money laundering charges, has asked the Federal High Court in Lagos to compel the anti-graft agency to pay him N5m for what he termed his “unlawful re-arrest and detention.”

The PUNCH had reported that Mompha, who is answering N32bn fraud charges, was re-arrested last Friday when he went to the EFCC office in Ikoyi, Lagos to reclaim his five wristwatches, one Apple Air pod, one iPhone 8 mobile phone and one pair of sunglasses seized from him by the anti-graft agency since last year.

The visit followed a July 24 ruling by Justice Mohammed Liman ordering the release of the seized items on the grounds that the EFCC did not list them as exhibits in court.

In the suit filed by his lawyer, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), on Tuesday, Mompha prayed the court to declare that his re-arrest and detention by the EFCC was unjustifiable and unlawful. Read more

UNILAG alumnus bags 50-years imprisonment for raping student on campus (Nation)

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday sentenced John Otema, an alumnus of the University of Lagos, to 50-years imprisonment for raping a 19-year-old student of the institution on campus.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 34-year-old Otema, a quantity surveyor and facilities manager, was charged before Justice Abiola Soladoye with three counts of rape and assault occasioning harm on two female students.

He was found guilty on two-counts of rape and assault occasioning harm in respect of the rape of the 19-year-old student (Student X) and was, however, found not guilty on a charge of raping a 20-year-old student (Student Y) of the institution.

He bagged 50-years in prison for the rape and three-years in prison for the assault on student X with both sentences to run concurently. Read more

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) at the weekend, botched the transfer of N25 million from a local bank account and $220,000 from an international account with the arrest of a seven-man fraud syndicate based in Lagos.

The arrest by the decoy team of RRS few days ago was based on intelligence received on the activities of a fraud syndicate based in Lagos and led by one Osita Nwafor, aka Ossy.

45-year-old Nwafor was apprehended in the gang’s hideout after a technical analysis of the details of the gang and its activities by the commander in charge of RRS, Tunji Disu, a Deputy Commissioner of Police. His arrest facilitated the subsequent arrest of six other members of the gang in different parts of the state.

Other members of the gang arrested by the police include Nwogu Joseph Chika, 36; Anthony Odama, 43; Ikechukwu Nkem, 32; James Okonkwo, 51; Adedio Paulinus, 29 and Ogundepo Olufemi, 51. Read more

Lagos security guard shoots motorist over deflated tyre (Punch)

A security guard, Lawrence Ajigboye, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly shooting a car owner, Obasi Ogbonaya, in the thigh around the Energy filling station in the Irawo area on the Ikorodu Road.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Obasi parked his Honda Pilot SUV in front of the filling station and left to do something in the area but when he returned, he discovered that one of the tyres had been deflated.

Annoyed by the development, Obasi reportedly asked the people around for who deflated his tyre and approached Lawrence, a senior security guard in the area, to get an answer.

The encounter, however, took another dimension when Lawrence suddenly brought out his rifle and allegedly shot Obasi in his right thigh. Read more

Police dismantle fraud syndicate, foil multi-million looting (Nation)

Attempts by a fraud syndicate to steal N25million from a local bank and $220,000 from a foreign bank have been foiled by operatives of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) following arrest of seven suspects.

The seven suspects identified as Osita Nwafor, 45, alias Ossy; Joseph Nwogu 36; Anthony Odama 43; Ikechukwu Nkem 32; James Okonkwo 51; Paulinus Adedio 29 and Olufemi Ogundepo 51 were arrested last week by undercover detectives acting on information received on activities of the syndicate.

According to the police, Nwafor, the leader, was first apprehended at their hideout after days of tailing and under studying the operations of the syndicate.

He was said to have provided useful information that led to the arrest of the others in different parts of Lagos, putting a stop to their plans of swindling unsuspecting victims.

They were alleged to have perfected a N3million fraud through a cloned Sim card which the police foiled. Read more

Man who beat traffic policewoman is a fake soldier – Police (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a passenger of a commercial bus for assaulting a policewoman controlling traffic at Shibiri bus stop, Ilemba Hausa area of the state while posing as a soldier.

The passenger, Yemi Aiyeni, was apprehended following a viral video of the assault which occurred last Sunday.

The police spokesperson in the state, SP Bala Elkana, in a statement on Friday tagged, ‘Police arrested man in a viral video assaulting a policewoman,’ said Aiyeni took on the policewoman, Inspector Martina Onyeacho, who arrested the bus for reportedly obstructing traffic flow.

He said, “Ilemba Hausa Police Station received a distress call that a female police officer, Inspector Martina Onyeacho, on traffic control at Shibiri bus stop is in distress. A patrol team was promptly deployed in the scene to rescue her. Her assailant, Yemi Ayeni, 32, was arrested while the policewoman was quickly taken to a hospital for treatment. She sustained various degrees of injury from beating she received from the suspect. Read more
