Gunmen invade MKO Abiola’s house in Lagos (Punch)
Gunmen on Wednesday invaded the house of the late Chief Moshood Abiola in Ikeja, Lagos State and stole property worth millions of naira.
A source confirmed the development to The PUNCH.
“Armed robbers invaded the house of the late MKO Abiola in the Opebi area of Ikeja. They carted away a lot of valuable items,” the source said.
When our correspondent visited Abiola’s house on Wednesday, a police patrol vehicle was stationed at the front of the building.
A security guard on the premises, however, declined to speak with our correspondent who inquired about the incident.
However, a resident who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “The operation occurred around 4 am when the security guards were asleep. They dug the ground of the back gate and gained entry. They carted away property and escaped.” Read more
Two arraigned for gun possession (Nation)
The police on Tuesday arraigned two men before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, house-breaking and unlawful possession of firearms.
The accused persons: Azubike Egweaka, 22, and Kojo Michael, 31, standing trial before Magistrate O. A. Olayinka, for robbing one Tope Okeowo of her property worth N1.5 million, all denied committing the offences.
The prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on June 10 at More Care area of Seme Border, Badagry.
He said that the defendants broke into the apartment of Okeowo and carted away her property.
“The defendants burgled the residence of the complainant, carted away a generating set , five-inch mattress, cooking gas and cylinder, standing fan, bags and pairs of shoes among other items, all valued at N1.5million.
“The complainant returned home and discovered that her house was burgled and reported to the police. Read more
Unlicensed driver crushes Lagos motorcyclist, passenger to death (Punch)
The family of a commercial motorcyclist, Osita Chukwu, has been thrown into mourning after the driver of a Sport Utility Vehicle belonging to a fish firm crushed him and his passenger to death in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Osita was conveying the yet-to-be-identified passenger to a destination in the Odogunyan area when the SUV driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle and rammed them to death at the Sheriff bus stop.
While the passenger reportedly died on the spot, Osita, who was said to have sustained severe injuries due to the impact of the accident, was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, one Ernest Oboh, whom Osita was supplying newspapers, said the motorcyclist died while on admission, adding that the Sagamu Road Police Division was contacted after the crash.
“I just lost my dispatch rider, who was operating as a commercial motorcyclist after supplying me newspapers. He was crushed to death alongside a passenger by a speeding SUV. The accident happened after he visited my vendor to drop the newspapers. It was the Sagamu Road Police Station that handled the matter and the victim’s family has been contacted,” he said. Read more
Court orders arrest of Lagos Prince (Nation)
Justice Sherifat Solebo of an Ikeja Special Offences Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a Lagos Prince, Waheed Gabadamosi Eletu-Odibo and one Yemi Idowu, for their failure to appear before the court for trial.
The defendants are to answer charges bordering on conspiracy, stealing, and unlawful conversion brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Others affected by the order of Justice Sherifat Solebo are their companies: Aircom Nigeria Limited and STB Building Society.
Justice Solebo made the arrest order yesterday while granting an application filed and argued by EFCC prosecuting counsel, Ahmed Yerima.
Eletu-Odibo and Idowu had refused to appear before the court to take their plea on the charges filed against them EFCC. Read more
Court remands man over alleged sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl (Guardian)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that a 40-year-old man, Folarin Rafiu, charged with alleged sexual assault of a five-year-old girl.
Rafiu, who resides at Ojodu area of Lagos, is charged with indecent treatment of a child.
The Magistrate, Mrs Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take Rafiu, ordered the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
She ordered that Rafiu be kept in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, pending DPP advice.
Kubeinje adjourned the case until Sept. 9 for mention.
The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Bisi Ogunleye, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 18 at his residence.
He said that the defendant sexually molested the minor. Read more
Man killed for accusing neighbour of sleeping with co-tenant’s wife (Punch)
A tenant, Adekunle Adeyemi, has gone into hiding after allegedly stabbing a co-tenant, Stanley Dickson, to death in the Grammar School area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Stanley accused Adekunle of having an illicit affair with the wife of another neighbour, Arinze Onuoha, who confronted him with the accusation.
During the confrontation, it was learnt that an argument ensued between Adekunle and Arinze, but Stanley, who informed Arinze of the alleged affair with his wife, Chisom, was not at home.
Adekunle was said to have threatened to confront Stanley with the accusation on his return from work in the evening.
A resident of the area, Ibidunni Adegoke, said during a visit to the area on Sunday that when both Adekunle and Stanley returned from work in the evening, they had a confrontation, which degenerated into a fight, adding that when the fight broke out, Adekunle allegedly stabbed Stanley to death.
She said, “The victim (Stanley) went to report his neighbour’s wife, Chisom, to her mother-in-law that another neighbour, Adekunle, was having sexual relations with her. From what we gathered, all of them live in the same building and Adekunle had been assisting Chismo with money to feed her family whenever her husband, Arinze, did not provide money for them to feed. Police assault Lagos community leader with axe (Punch)
A community leader, Alaba Peters, has accused men of the Lagos State Police Command of attacking him with an axe for intervening in a dispute.
The victim, who claimed to have been hospitalised after the incident, urged the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to bring the culprits to justice.
PUNCH Metro learnt that some policemen attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit, Gbagada, had stormed the Odogunyan area of the state around 4.30pm on August 10, 2020, and arrested some tricycle operators’ union workers.
The community leader was said to have intervened and asked the cops the reason for the arrest, which did not go down with them.
Peters told PUNCH Metro that he was beaten with an axe by the cops, who eventually drove the union workers away from the scene. Read more
