NDLEA removes husband approval condition for married women’s visa clearance (Channels)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), on Thursday, dumped its initial rule that married women would be required to provide a letter of approval from their husbands to obtain a visa clearance certificate.

This followed a backlash on social media after the anti-narcotics agency initially mandated married women to submit a “letter of approval to travel from their husband, attached with his passport photograph” to obtain the certificate.

The NDLEA’s visa clearance certified individuals with no drug-related convictions in Nigeria — a requirement by some countries. Read more

Adebayo accused President Bola Tinubu government of paying lip service to local government autonomy.

The Rivers State Government has clarified that the recent Court of Appeal judgment in Abuja did not reinstate the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the State House of Assembly, dismissing claims that they remain members of the Assembly.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Israel Dagogo Iboroma, SAN, the government insisted that Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers had automatically vacated their seats upon their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 11, 2023. 1 dead, 12 trapped underground in former Colorado gold mine; rescue efforts ongoing (USAToday)

One person is dead and 12 others are trapped 1,000 feet underground after equipment malfunctioned at a former gold mine that is now a Colorado tourist attraction, authorities said Thursday.

Rescue efforts are underway at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near the town of Cripple Creek, about 45 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, according to the Teller County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred around noon when the elevator shaft had a mechanical issue that “created a severe danger for the participants,” Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell said at a news conference Thursday.

At the time of the incident, the tour group was about 500 feet beneath the surface, according to Mikesell. Eleven people, including two children and four people who sustained minor injuries, were rescued with a trolley system. At least one person was killed, Mikesell said without providing details of how the person died. Read more
