Have you paid your Land Use Charge? Ambode is not playing o

If you live in Lagos, the news that the Lagos State Government has increased the Land Use Charge will not be news to you.About a month ago, the LASG signed the Land Use Charge Law 2018. In a story published n thisislagos (read it here) we wrote that “the simplest summary is that LASG is going to charge property owners between 200 and 500% more and it will mean a hike in rents for Lagos tenants.”

The state governor went ahead, after due consultations with various stakeholder groups, to reduce the hike (read it here) but civil society, lawyers and members of the organised private sector have continued to say NO WAY!

The lingering opposition is addressed in the envelope containing the Demand Notices. Accompanying the Demand Notice is a letter from the LASG signed by Akinyemi Ashade Honourable Commissioner for Finance.

In the letter, the commissioner expresses appreciation to property owners on behalf of Governor Ambode before going further to explain what the hike in LUC would be used for.

“This is to convey the appreciation and gratitude of His Excellency Governor Akinwumi Ambode for your support and payment of Land Use Charge [sic] to the Lagos State Government….

We promise to continue to use the proceeds of the Land Use Charge to fund the numerous ongoing infrastructural projects…and other social amenities for the benefit of all Lagosians.

Therefore we solicit for your continued support and prompt payment of your Land Use Charge for the prosperity of all.”

Yesterday, residents in Anthony Village woke up to find Land Use Charge demand notices pasted to their gates or delivered to their meigadis.

Whether you recieved the notice formally or not, your house got marked – DELIVERED!
