Head of Interpol reported missing after leaving for China

The head of the International Criminal Police Organisation Meng Hongwei has been reported missing by his wife.

Meng Hongwei travelled to China in late September, but his wife says she has not heard from him since.

French police announced his disappearance today and they are leading investigations to find him.

He lives in Lyon where Interpol is based. Meng used to be Vice Minister of Public Security in China, according to Interpol’s website.

He was elected head of Interpol in 2016.

He was born in Harbin, China, in 1953, and graduated from Peking University where he studied law before entering politics in 1972.

He was director of China’s coast guard and appointed deputy director of China’s State Oceanic Administration.
