Woman in court over ‘fake funds transfer’ (Nation)

A woman, Joy Godwin, was on Wednesday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly paying for N306, 000 worth of designer items via fake funds transfer. Godwin, 26, was arraigned by the police on a two-count charge of fraud and theft before Mrs F. M. Dalley.

Prosecuting Sergeant Oluwafemi Adeleye alleged that Godwin committed the offences on July 13 at about 2:30pm at Ajah, Lagos.

The court heard that the defendant bought clothes, shoes and bags worth N306, 000 from Dress Jem Boutique and requested to pay by money transfer.

She was given a Point of Sale (POS) machine and it indicated that the transfer was successful, following which she left with the goods. Read more

Siblings sentenced to community service over toy gun (Punch)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has sentenced two brothers, Moses Sunday and Godwin Sunday, to one month of community service for unlawful possession of a toy gun.

The News agency of Nigeria reports that the Chief Magistrate, Olufunke Sule-Amzat, sentenced the siblings after they pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and unlawful possession of a toy gun.

The duo had urged the court to temper justice with mercy, saying their act was out of ignorance and poverty.

The chief magistrate ordered that the convicts should spend two hours every day for the next one month carrying out the community service. Read more

Court sentences guard to 2 years for posing as doctor (Nation)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Wednesday sentenced a 28-year-old security guard, Salisu Usman, to two years in Kirikiri prison for posing as a doctor. Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi sentenced Usman after he pleaded guilty.

Osunsanmi, who sentenced Usman without an option of fine, ordered that the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.

Usman, at his arraignment on July 18, pleaded guilty, and was remanded in prison. When the case was called up for fact and sentence, he admitted guilt.

The accused, who lives at Oluwalogbo, Isefun in Ayobo, Lagos, begged the court for leniency. Read more

Driver allegedly robs his former boss (Nation)

A dismissed driver, Solomon James, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly robbing his former boss, Utchay Odims.

The incident occurred, about 8pm, on July 21, at 382, Ademola Ajasa Street, Omole Estate. James claimed he only wanted to inform Odims’ wife about his extra-marital affairs.

The police said the suspect had the intention of defiling the victim’s wife, who, fortunately, was not at home.

A source said last Saturday, the suspect reportedly scaled the fence of the victim’s house, entered, tied the maid and the man before robbing him.

James said: “I ordered the maid to tie her boss. Then I tied her. I asked my former boss who else was in the house, he said no one, as his wife had gone to church. I said I would have loved her to be around so that she would witness what I was doing. Read more

Kidnap suspect disguises as mad man to abduct 4-yr-old girl from Lagos church (Vanguard)

Attempt by a suspected kidnapper, who disguised as a mad man to abduct a four-year-old girl from Christ Anointed Church, in Ayobo area of Lagos, during church service, has been foiled leading to his arrest.

The suspect, Jacob Dare, 28, according to the father of the girl, Mr Ebhoboghe Rufus, attempted to lure his child with N50.

He said: “He wanted to lure her to follow him with N50. When the alarm was raised by some members of the church, he attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended.” Read more

3 die in Lagos cult war (Nation)

Three suspected cultists have been killed at Somolu, Lagos Mainland after rival cult groups went berserk.

Those killed include leader of Eiye cult group in the area, Tunde Awokoya, 36, alias Chop-Up, one Gabriel and another unnamed man.

It was gathered that members of the Eiye and Aye cult groups had spoiled for war earlier on Tuesday but were dispersed by policemen, who got information about it.

However, the Aye group, it was gathered, targeted Chop-Up, who had gone to a beer-parlour on Abiodun Street to cool off and they murdered him there. Read more

I wear white hijab to kill targets, says 20-year-old suspected cultist (Nation)

A 20-year-old Mariam Abiola, arrested by police operatives attached to Ilasa Division, Lagos, On Monday said she killed four people between December and last week.

Abiola, who said she joined the Eiye confraternity after fleeing from her parent’s home at Abeokuta, Ogun State, told reporters she usually wore white Jalabia and hijab to assassinate her targets to cover the gun.

According to her, she was an armourer for the cult group as well as an executioner, adding that they usually gave her the picture of a target and identified the person’s house.

Abiola said she was paid N10,000 for each of the four persons she killed for her group at Ilasa, adding that one Sadiq, taught her how to shoot a gun. Read more

1 dead, several injured as crisis rocks Lagos PDP (ThisDay)

Some suspected thugs, weekend, shot dead the Apapa Local Government Area (LGA) Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State,  Omo Oba Adeniyi Aborishade, and left several others with injuries.

Aborishade was shot dead at Eti-Osa Local Government Area (LGA) of the state during the crisis that erupted among members of the party.

It was gathered that members of the Lagos PDP were on tour of the local government when the fracas erupted and some thugs brandished dangerous weapons like cutlasses and guns.

According to reports, the clash was between two factions of the party – one faction for the State Chairman, Hon. Moshood Adegoke Sabadon and the other for the Eti-Osa LG Chapter Chairman, Kehinde Fasasi. Read more

Investigate death of Apapa LGA chairman, Lagos PDP tasks IGP (Vanguard)

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Lagos State, on Monday, called on the Inspector General of Police to conduct a thorough, unbiased and professional investigation into the death of the Apapa Local Government Area Chairman of the party, Mr. Adeniyi Borishade, and others who sustained several injuries.

Speaking during a press conference, the party secretary, Mr. Muiz Dosunmu urged the IGP to direct the AIG Zone 2 to handle the investigation “as our confidence in the Lagos State Police Command has eroded”.

Police arrest 5 PDP Chieftains over killing of LG Chairman in Lagos (Independent)

The Lagos State Police Command, on Sunday said it has detained five PDP chieftains in the state for interrogation over the killing of one Mr Borishade Adeniyi, Chairman, PDP Apapa Chapter.

The arrest was confirmed by the command’s spokesman, CSP Chike Oti in a statement, stressing that what was supposed to be a peaceful political meeting of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members ended in unnecessary bloodletting.

Teenager ‘kidnaps’ self for N600,000 ransom from dad (Nation)

A 19-year-old girl, Dorcas Adilewa has been arrested by the police for allegedly plotting her kidnap and demanding N600,000 ransom from her father, Taiwo.

The teenager was arrested alongside her friend, Ifeoluwa Ogunbanjo, a nursing mother, whose mobile phone she used to contact her father for ransom. According to Adilewa, she needed the money to sponsor herself through school, adding that she was seeking admission into the university.

She said: “I worked with a betting company but I was owed my three-month salary. I stopped going to school when my aunt died. But I was able to write the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam this year. I needed the money to sponsor myself through school because my father was no longer working and my uncle doesn’t assist. Read more

BRT vehicle kills woman in Lagos (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified woman has been knocked down by a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle at the Palmgrove end of Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

The incident, which occurred on Monday around 9.30am, was said to have led to the death of the yet-to-be-identified woman.

Punch Metro gathered that the woman was trying to cross from Palmgrove side to the other side of the road when the incident occurred.

A source said, “She first got into the BRT lane before crossing the rest of the highway; but an oncoming BRT bus knocked her down and she died on the spot.” Read more

4 cops dismissed for extorting N7m from cleric (Punch)

Four policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in the Lagos State Command have been dismissed for alleged professional misconduct, corrupt practices and discreditable conduct.

The names of the dismissed officers were given as Adeoye Adekunle, Adeniran Adebowale, Agbi Lucky and Odighe Hehosa.

It was gathered that the men were charged to court on offences of armed robbery, kidnapping, unlawful detention, intimidation and threatening violence against one Mr. Chukwudi Odionye, aka Bishop.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 2 Police Command, CSP Dolapo Badmus, in a statement said the command received a petition by Odionye against the four officers on May 2, 2018. Read more

Man escapes from court, jumps into canal to evade arrest (DailyTrust)

A mild drama occurred on Friday at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s court, when a 38-year-old man, Mr. Segun Mabaoreje, in a bid to escape justice, ran out of the court room and jumped into a canal.

It took the intervention of policemen attached to the magistrate to re-arrest the suspect who is being tried for robbery and illegal possession of fire arms.

The prosecutor, Inspector G. Simon, prepared another charge and he was arraigned for attempting to escape.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.K.J. Layeni, did not grant him bail as his attempted escape happened while the court was in session. Read more

SARS men torture musician for allegedly being yahoo boy (Punch)

An artiste, Richie Sunday, aka Dollamachine, has accused some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of unlawfully arresting and torturing him. Sunday said he was arrested around 12pm on Thursday, July 19, 2018, in the Iyana-Oworo area of Lagos State.

He added that the policemen said he was a yahoo boy (Internet fraudster).

Punch Metro learnt that the 26-year-old was on his way to a supermarket to buy some drinks before the SARS operatives accosted him, telling him to enter a commercial bus.

The musician also said when he requested for the identity of the officer that initially stopped him, he and other members of his team allegedly pounced on him using the butts of their guns and sticks to beat him up, injuring him in the process. Read more
