One of the #EndSARS protesters, Kamsiyochukwu Ibe, who testified before the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS-Related Abuses and other Matters, has confirmed being attacked by hoodlums.

Ibe claimed that three hoodlums attacked her for testifying before the #EndSARS judicial panel in Lagos State.

Explaining how the attack happened in a video clip, the victim said she was waiting at a bus stop to board a vehicle home when the hoodlums used sharp objects to cut her in her hands and legs.

She added that the gang wanted to kill her for demanding justice at the panel. Read more

ASPMDA urges LASG to obey court orders (Guardian)

The Registered Members of Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPMDA) has called on the Lagos State government to obey court orders, maintain the status quo pending the suit over its association’s election.

Justice P.O. Lifu of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had on July 22, 2021, in a suit between Ikechukwu Ogbo & Ors against ASPMDA mandates all parties, members of the association, all and sundry to maintain status quo on the removal of the Chief Sunday Igbanuzue as the Interim Caretaker committee.

The court ordered the group not to conduct the association’s election pending when the matters before it are fully determined.

The group alleged that seven members of the association, with the support of a Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor, instigated and coopted the Lagos State Attorney-General to issue a letter dated October 18, 2021, indicating that a three-man caretaker committee has been appointed. Married man abandons girlfriend in Lagos hotel room, rapes receptionist (Punch)

A Lagos resident, identified only as Fuad, has been arrested for allegedly raping a receptionist in a toilet in the Mutab Hotel and Suites on Abeokuta Street, in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the 19-year-old victim was asleep at the reception of the hotel when one of the lodgers woke her up at midnight and requested a towel.

It was learnt that the victim immediately left the reception, went to the backyard of the hotel to get the towel and was on her way to attend to the guest when she felt the urge to relieve herself.

The victim, who spoke to our correspondent on Sunday, said she decided to urinate at the general toilet at the backyard when Fuad accosted her inside the toilet. Read more

Senate rejects environment ministry’s N16b budget to pay debt (Leadership)

The senate has rejected the provision of a N16 billion provided for in the Ministry of Environment budget for payment of debt which maturity deadline is in 2023.

The chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, raised the objection when he presented the budget of the ministry to the main Appropriations Committee in Abuja.

Ekweremadu’s curiosity was triggered when he saw that last year there was N6 billion in the budget for servicing of multilateral loans relating to erosion control.

But regrettably, about N1.6 billion was released to the Environment Ministry and later the Ministry of Finance wrote to say it was a mistake, that it was supposed to be from the Service wide vote where they service most of the loans. Read more

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has said that the Armed Forces deserve support from Nigerians for the sacrifices made in tackling various forms of insecurity across parts of the country.

Lawan made this known on Monday while receiving a delegation of the 2022 Armed Forces Decorations team at his office in a Abuja.

Fight against oil theft fails because of military involvement, Wike alleges (Guardian)

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has alleged that the fight to stop oil theft has continued to fail because top-ranking officers of the military are involved in it.

Wike stated this when he hosted the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Isiaka Oladayo Amao, on a courtesy visit to Government House, Port Harcourt, on Monday.

In a statement by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, Wike noted that it was not only the wastage of the economy that was involved but also the degradation of the environment.

He said: “You know this bunkering cannot stop; let’s be serious about it, everybody is involved. The military is involved. Police are involved. The Nigeria Civil Defence Corps is involved. If not, there is no way bunkering can continue. It’s a terrible thing. Read more

FG commissions first agricultural radio, television (Tribune)

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammad Abubakar has commissioned the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) radio and television studio at the Council’s headquarters in Abuja.

Aside from commissioning the first-ever agricultural radio and television in Nigeria, the Minister also commissioned a museum and electronic library for the Council, and also distributed extension teaching materials to 11 agricultural Research Institutes and Colleges.

During the commissioning on Monday, the Minister said the use of the facility is expected to strengthen research collaborations as well as provide a platform for timely dissemination of agricultural information and showcasing of agricultural interventions in the country.

“This is official commissioning of this world-class facility comprising of a digital museum and documentation centre for referencing agricultural research information and knowledge, an electronic library, which is to aid research by providing greater access to recent advances in agricultural sciences; and television and radio stations, which will link millions of Nigerians to firsthand agricultural information. North-Central coalition seeks emergence of president from region (Leadership)

The Coalition of North Central Groups (CNCG) has called on Nigerians to support the emergence of the president from the North-Central region in 2023.

Speaking during a press conference yesterday in Abuja, the CNGG chairman, Salahudeen Lukman, said the region had never produced a civilian president or vice president since independence.

Lukman argued that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remained the last hope of the common masses to move them out of poverty, hunger, and insecurity.

He urged the PDP stakeholders to “concede the presidential ticket to the region for equity and justice.” Read more

Osinbajo, govs, Ooni, Alaafin, others launch Yoruba World Centre (Sun)

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will today lead prominent Yoruba monarchs, including the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, and Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, to launch Yoruba World Centre in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The project’s visioner, Chief Alao Adedayo, publisher of Alaroye newspaper, who made the disclosure, said the multimillion naira project has been sited inside Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan. The event, he said, would hold at the John Paul II Hall.

AThe six governors in the South West: Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) as well as many eminent Yoruba leaders, are also expected to join Osinbajo to make another history for the Yoruba race.

Adedayo, who stated that the project is a brainchild of the International Centre for Yoruba Arts and Culture (INCEYAC), explained that the project signposts a new chapter in the advancement of Yoruba culture, history, tradition and values. He added that launch would feature opening of the centre’s temporary abode, the presentation of a full documentary on the Yoruba World Centre, and the laying of the foundation at the permanent site by the vice president. Ministers defy Tory rebellion to push through social care cap amendment (Guardian)

Ministers have pushed through an amendment to England’s social care plans, which is set to disproportionately hit poorer pensioners, despite a sizeable rebellion from backbenchers.

The change means that council contributions to care fees would not go towards the cap, which means poorer people who get means-tested help would end up paying the same as richer people if they needed care for a significant amount of time.

It would save the government £900m a year by 2027, but would leave many poorer homeowners exposed to “catastrophic costs” including the need to sell their homes to fund care, analysts have said. The vote passed by 272 to 246, a majority of 26. There were 19 rebels for the Conservatives and 70 abstentions, of which only 13 were paired according to Labour.

Rebels included a number of Tories in northern seats likely to be hit hard by the changes, including 2019 intake MPs Christian Wakeford in Bury South, Holly Munby-Croft in Scunthorpe and Mark Jenkinson in Worthington. Read more

Ethiopia’s PM Abiy Ahmed vows to lead army ‘from the battlefront’ (Aljazeera)

Ethiopia’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning prime minister has said he will lead his country’s army “from the battlefront” beginning on Tuesday, a dramatic new step as the year-long conflict moves closer to the capital Addis Ababa.

“Starting tomorrow, I will mobilise to the front to lead the defence forces,” Abiy Ahmed said in a statement posted on Twitter late on Monday.

“Those who want to be among the Ethiopian children who will be hailed by history, rise up for your country today. Let’s meet at the battlefront.”

Tens of thousands of people are estimated to have been killed in the war between Ethiopian and allied forces, and fighters from the country’s northern Tigray region, who dominated the national government before Abiy took office. Lord Frost has described England as the “freest country in the world” as he hailed the lack of Covid-19 restrictions, as almost 45,000 positive cases were recorded in the UK on Monday.

Speaking at the Guildhall in London, he lauded the lack of coronavirus measures amid the ramping up of restrictions for unvaccinated people elsewhere in Europe.

Lord Frost said: “I am very happy that free Britain, or at least merry England, is probably now the freest country in the world as regards covid restrictions.

US considering sending extra weaponry to Ukraine as fears mount over potential Russian invasion (CNN)

The Biden administration is weighing sending military advisers and new equipment including weaponry to Ukraine as Russia builds up forces near the border and US officials prepare allies for the possibility of another Russian invasion, multiple sources familiar with the deliberations tell CNN.

The discussions about the proposed lethal aid package are happening as Ukraine has begun to warn publicly that an invasion could happen as soon as January. The package could include new Javelin anti-tank and anti-armor missiles as well as mortars, the sources said.

Air defense systems, such as stinger missiles, are also under consideration, and the Defense Department has been pressing for some equipment that would have gone to Afghanistan — like Mi-17 helicopters — to instead be sent to Ukraine. The Mi-17 is a Russian helicopter that the US originally purchased to give to the Afghans. The Pentagon is now weighing what to do with them after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in August. Waukesha parade crash suspect Darrell Brooks Jr. faces 5 counts of intentional homicide (USAToday)

The driver of an SUV that hurtled through a barricade and slammed into a Christmas parade in a suburban community on Sunday was fleeing from a domestic disturbance moments before he killed at least five people and injured more than 40, police said.

Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson said Monday that Darrell Brooks Jr., 39, was fleeing a domestic disturbance with a report of a knife when he rammed into the parade. Brooks was not being chased, Thompson said. He will be charged with five counts of intentional homicide, Thompson added.

The dead were four women and a man ages 52 to 81. Thompson said 48 people were injured in the crash, which was captured on the city’s livestream as the SUV struck a high school band, children’s dance group and the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies.

At least nine patients were in critical condition at two hospitals Monday, and seven others were in serious condition. Local hospital officials said earlier Monday that at least six children were in critical condition. Children’s Wisconsin Hospital received 18 patients, ages 3 to 16, including three sets of siblings, doctors said. Read more

Australia missing campers: Man arrested over pair’s disappearance (BBC)

Australian police have arrested a man over the disappearance of two campers from a national park 20 months ago.

Russell Hill, 74, and Carol Clay, 73, were last heard from on 20 March last year when they called a friend from their remote campsite in Victoria.

Despite one of the state’s largest missing person investigations, there has been no trace of the hikers since.

On Tuesday, Victoria Police said they had arrested a 55-year-old man from Melbourne in connection with the case.
