3 feared dead, shops looted as hoodlums clash in Lagos (Punch)

No fewer than three persons have been feared dead after hoodlums clashed in some parts of Mushin and Surulere areas of Lagos State.

Punch Metro learnt that the fight, which started around 8pm on Sunday between two groups at a party on Alaafia Street, extended to neighbouring streets in the area.

The fight, which extended till Monday, was said to be a supremacy battle between the factions.

Among the affected streets were Daniel, Alafia, Morgan, Babalola, Sowunmi and Olusoga. Read more

Lekki shootings: I saw corpse with bullet-torn head, protester tells panel (Punch)

‌An #EndSARS protester, Kamsiyochukwu Perpetual, has said she saw many dead bodies, including one with a bullet-torn head, following the alleged shootings at peaceful #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki tollgate on the night of October 20.

In a petition she submitted to the Lagos State Panel of Judicial Inquiry probing the tollgate shootings by soldiers, Perpetual said she saw the dead body with bullet-torn head at Reddington Hospital, Lekki, when she went in search of injured protesters the morning after the shootings.

Perpetual said she visited the hospital in company with one Samuel Isah and another person identified as Seye, with the aim of collecting the data of injured protesters but doctors at the hospital prevent them until a media man; “World Rapper Man” intervened. Read more

Lagos arraigns man for assaulting LASTMA officer (Nation)

A man, Ben Emmanuel, has been arraigned before a Yaba Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly assaulting a LASTMA officer.

Emmanuel and some persons now at large were alleged to have assaulted and inflicted injuries on Ismaila Lukman, a LASTMA officer, while carrying out his assigned official duty.

The incident happened on Sunday, November 8, 2020, at the Jakande Junction area in Lekki.

A statement signed by the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), Monday said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had on November 10, 2020, arraigned Emmanuel before Yaba, Chief Magistrate Court on a two-count charge of “grievous bodily harm under Section 245” and “resisting a public officer while engaged in the discharge of his lawful duties under Section 117(1)” of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), Lagos 2015. Panic as Okada riders, task force clash at Mile 2 (Guardian)

Officials of the Lagos State task force and motorcycle operators, popularly called ‘Okada’ riders, yesterday clashed at Second Rainbow area of Mile 2 on Apapa-Oshodi expressway during a raid by the agency around 12:15 pm.

According to eyewitnesses, the Okada riders resisted the task force officials from impounding their motorcycles. In a bid to express their displeasure, the riders set bonfires on the expressway, leading to gridlock. The clash also paralysed activities in the Amuwo-Odofin local government area.

Trouble started when officials of the task force stormed the area in the morning and seized scores of motorcycles, according to Mr. Joshua Emmanuel, chairman, Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Second Rainbow branch, Mile 2. Read more

Maid abuse: Court dismisses case against Lekki wife (Punch)

An Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court has struck out a case of abuse and assault against a fashion designer, Mrs Bisi Olukayode.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.E. Nwaka, said the matter was discontinued over indolent prosecution.

Punch Metro in March 2018 reported that a 14-year-old Togolese, Anjuah Sunday, was employed by the Olukayodes to work as a maid at their house on Lekki Gardens Estate Phase 3.

The victim, who arrived in Lagos with her grandmother, was reportedly handed over to the family by an agent.

The victim was, however, allegedly tortured by the mistress with sticks, wires and canes, which led to injuries in different parts of her body. Read more

Mechanic, 50, in court over alleged theft of vehicle (Vanguard)

A 50-year-old auto mechanic, Nkem Vitalis, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court over alleged stealing of a Volkswagen bus, worth N800,000.

Vitalis, who resides at No. 20 Anglican Street, off Agbado-Oja in Ogun, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, ASP Akeem Raji, told the court that the defendant committed the offences, with others still at large, on Sept. 19 at Balogun Street, Oshodi, Lagos.

Raji said that the defendant stole a Volkswagen LT bus, property of the complainant, Mr Chidi Eze, from where it was parked. Read more 

Court to rule on Mompha’s no-case submission Dec 9 (Vanguard)

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday further adjourned until Dec. 9, ruling on a no-case submission by an internet celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha (Mompha) standing trial for alleged N32.9 billion fraud.

Mustapha is charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on 14 counts bordering on fraud, money laundering and operation of a foreign exchange business without authorisation by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

He was arraigned alongside a firm, Ismalob Global Investment Ltd.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge, and was granted bail in the sum of N100 million with one surety in the like sum.

Ruling on the no case submission could not take place on Wednesday as the court did not sit. Read more

Scanty police presence, spike in crime rate trigger fear among Lagos residents (Guardian)

A month after the #EndSARS protests turned violent across the country with widespread brigandage and burning of police, public and private facilities, there is apprehension among many Lagos residents as the spike in crime rates triggers fear in many settlements and communities.

Citizens now take responsibility for their own security as visibility policing is at its lowest ebb. Last Thursday’s bloody attack on a bullion van by daredevil robbers in the Ajah area of the state has further aggravated their fears.

Speaking on the rise in crime rate within the metropolis, Christopher Chukwuka said: “We are at the mercy of hoodlums now as policemen no longer respond to distress calls. Bad boys now operate with boldness.”

Narrating his experience on Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, an eyewitness told The Guardian that motorists should always pray against getting stuck in traffic as hoodlums now operate unchallenged. Read more
