Lagos hoodlums stab 27-year-old man, victim hospitalised (Punch)

A man, who gave his name simply as Omotayo, has expressed fear after some residents in the Mile 12 area of Lagos advised him not to return to the area soon, following his ordeal at the hands of some hoodlums who attacked him on Saturday.

The 27-year-old victim, in an interview with PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, said he was going to a market in the Mile 12 area to buy a gadget when some persons suspected to be thugs in the area summoned him.

He said he ignored them because he had no business with them and he suspected they wanted to rob him. Read more

Drug trafficker bags 5 years jail term (Punch)

A 49-year-old drug trafficker, Ariyibi Olaseinde, was on Tuesday sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Lagos, for attempting to illegally export 11.5kg of cocaine to Saudi Arabia.

Olaseinde was convicted and sentenced by Justice Chukwuejekwu Aneke after he pleaded guilty to the two counts of conspiracy and illegal export of drugs filed against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The prosecutor, Augustine Nwagu, told the court that the convict was arrested with the drug on February 20, 2023, at the Screening Hall of Terminal 11 of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, during the outward clearance of passengers on a Qatar Airways flight to Medina, Saudi Arabia via Doha. Man remanded for stabbing friend to death (Punch)

A 38-year-old man, Raphael Agu, has been remanded in the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Lagos State, for alleged murder.

Agu was brought before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba Lagos on Tuesday on two counts of murder.

The defendant was accused of allegedly stabbing his friend, Stanley Ugo, in the stomach with a knife on May 25, 2023, during a fight in the Ogudu area of the state.

According to the prosecution, the defendant was given N15,000 by a developer erecting a building around the Transformer Bus Stop in the Ogudu area of the state, to share among the area boys, which he did. Read more

UNILAG undergraduate shot dead over stolen phone (Punch)

An undergraduate of the University of Lagos, identified simply as Adekunle, was on Saturday shot dead by armed robbers at Harvey Road, Moore Road Junction, in the Yaba area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Adekunle and his school mate identified simply as Opeyemi boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG and while in the vehicle, a man, who was hanging at the back of the bus, dispossessed Opeyemi of her iPhone 7 plus.

Pained by the development, Opeyemi raised the alarm and Adekunle, in a desperate attempt to retrieve the phone from the robber who jumped down from the bus and fled, pursued him. Read more

Army arrests 6 for impersonation, hunts fake general (Punch)

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army on Monday in Lagos paraded six suspects said to be impersonating military men.

Lieutenant Ayodeji Owoyomi, who spoke on behalf of the Commander, 81 Division Provost Group, Brigadier General Mohammed Abubakar, paraded the suspects before journalists at the division’s headquarters on Victoria Island.

Owoyomi added that the division was also on the trail of a man who he said was parading himself as a Brigadier General. Read more

Police arraign 3 for stealing from employer (Punch)

The Yaba Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded three employees of Berger Paints Nigeria Limited for allegedly stealing their employer’s products and raw materials used in making cement.

The suspects, Victor Olasukanmi, James Odelade and Kehinde Ogundare, were arraigned on three counts of conspiracy, stealing and criminal conversion of funds.

They were remanded by Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun for 21 days at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre. Read more

N1b petrol, other smuggled goods seized in May– Customs (Punch)

The Federal Operations Unit, Zone A , Ikeja of the Nigeria Customs Service says it intercepted 30, 900 litres of Premium Motor Spirit also known as petrol and 6,861 bags of foreign parboiled rice equivalent to 12 trailer loads and others with a duty paid value of N1bn in May 2023.

The unit, in a statement on Monday, said the contrabands were intercepted at different times and locations within border corridors of the South-West Zone.

The Acting Customs Area Controller in charge of the unit, Hussein Ejibunu, explained that some of the contrabands were intercepted for either violating the guidelines on the importation/exportation of goods, concealment, undervaluation or wrong classification and smuggling. Read more

Estate developer in court for duping church of N65m (Punch)

An estate developer, Kelly Nwogu, was on Friday remanded by the Federal High Court in Lagos for allegedly obtaining N65m from a church under false pretence.

The defendant is facing three counts of conspiracy, obtained by false pretence and fraudulent conversion, preferred against him by the Police Special Fraud Unit.

Nwogu was arraigned alongside his company, Livelihood Homes Limited, and others still at large before Justice Peter Lifu. Read more

Police arraign man for stealing over N12m (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Friday arraigned a robbery suspect, Kehinde Adewumi, popularly called “Hunter” for alleged armed robbery in the Mushin area of the state.

The 33-year-old defendant was arraigned before Magistrate Nwaka on three counts of robbery and armed robbery.

Adewumi and some members of his gang allegedly robbed one Stanley Nwabuwa at gunpoint in Mushin in 2022 and collected his valuables including his Automated Teller Machine card, with which they allegedly withdrew N12.2m. Read more

A Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jerry Ogunsakin, was on Thursday arraigned before the Federal High Court, in Lagos for alleged unlawful conversion of N128m.

The defendant is facing three counts of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence and unlawful conversion preferred against him by the Special Fraud Unit.

Two men, Emmanuel Victor and Wisdom Ikechukwu, were on Thursday arraigned before a Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square for alleged armed robbery.

The defendants are facing four counts of conspiracy, robbery and armed robbery.

Cameroonian bags jail term for stealing from Nigerian girlfriend (Punch)

A 28- year-old Cameroonian, Thedze Dovil, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for allegedly defrauding his girlfriend, Patience Bassey, of N354,000.

The defendant was first arraigned on April 27, 2023, by the Lagos State Police Command before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka of the Yaba Magistrates’ Court on one count of stealing.

The PUNCH had reported on April 27, 2023, that the foreigner, who was a security guard, took his girlfriend out on her birthday to a hotel where he drugged her and she slept off, made away with her Automated Teller Machine card with which he withdrew N354,000. Read more

Court remands 3 suspected cultists for murder (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, on Thursday, remanded three suspected members of an unlawful society called ‘IBILE,’ Jemilu Adamu, Babatunde Gbenga and Jimoh Idris, for alleged murder.

Justice Yetunde Adesanya remanded the suspects after they took their plea.

The defendants are facing two counts of membership in an unlawful society preferred against them by the state. Read more

Motor-boy deliberately stabbed sex worker to death, says police witness (Punch)

A police prosecution witness, Inspector Jola Oso, on Thursday, told a Lagos State High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square how he investigated the murder of a 28-year-old sex worker, Elochukwu Solomon, who was killed by a 23- year-old bus conductor, Babatunde Oluwadamilare.

The witness, who was led in evidence-in-chief by the state prosecuting counsel, Olayemi Shofolu, said the defendant made a statement saying that he had an agreement to pay the late Solomon N2,000, but that it was after he had sex with her that the deceased said she was no longer collecting N2, 000 but N8, 000.

“The defendant said it was the deceased that first held his clothes before he saw a kitchen knife, and that immediately he saw the knife, he took it and stabbed the deceased,” the witness said. Read more

Police arrest 3 suspected “one chance” robbers in Lagos (Guardian)

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of three suspected members of a one-chance robbery gang operating along the Oshodi–Gbagada Expressway.

According to a statement signed by the Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects were arrested by the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

“The suspects had abandoned their operational vehicle, a Suzuki mini bus popularly called ‘korope’ at the Gbagada area of Oshodi-Oke along Gbagada–Oshodi Expressway, on April 14, 2023, when RRS operatives accosted them while trying to drop off a victim,” Hundeyin stated. Read more

Police arrest mother of 2 for invasion in Lagos (Guardian)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a mother of two, Bunmi Malik, who goes about with a bunch of keys to invade people’s homes and cart away their belongings.

The woman was nabbed by the Alagbado Police Division.

The Guardian gathered that Malik invades people’s home while they have gone to church and cart away their properties. Read more
