Hoodlums vandalise 200 vehicles during Lagos clash (Punch)
There was drama in the Itire-Ikate area of Surulere, Lagos State, on Friday, November 8, 2019, as hoodlums invaded some streets and vandalised over 200 vehicles belonging to residents.
According to the residents, the vandalised vehicles were parked on Bashorun, Shobande, Ogunsami, Ogunmuyiwa, Oredola, Lagos, Oshiga, Salami Bashorun and adjoining streets under the Oredola Community Development Association.
PUNCH Metro gathered that there was a crisis was between hoodlums from Shobande and Wosilat streets, as they stormed the area around 11.30pm on Friday and allegedly used cutlasses and hammers to smash the windscreens of vehicles parked on streets in the area. Read more

Street trading and roadside parking have for long been a major cause of traffic gridlock in Lagos State.
There is, however, divergence of opinions on what should be the response of the state government to street trading, in particular. Some are of the view that government should not enforce ban on street trading on the account that it is an integral part of African custom and tradition.
Others see it as a manifestation of both poverty and underdevelopment while some others see it as a natural trend in every major city of the world. What those who hold this view, however, forget to add is that trade regulation and issuance of trade license is a standard practice in every civilized country of the world. Read more
84-year-old woman murdered in Osun (DailyTrust)
An 84-year-old woman, Mrs Janet Alatede of Ebo Afunsho Compound in Iree in Boripe Local Government Area of Osun State, has been killed by unknown persons. Residents of the area yesterday said the woman was hacked to death Sunday evening.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Folasade Odoro, confirmed the incident to our correspondent yesterday, saying it was being investigated. Read more

Family of cockroaches found living inside man’s ear (DailyTrust)
A man in China suffering from an earache discovered his ear was filled with almost a dozen cockroaches. The 24-year-old man identified only as Mr. Lv visited a hospital in Guangdong Province, southeast China, in October, the New York Post reported citing the AsiaWire news agency. Lv told doctors he had been experiencing a “sharp pain” in his right ear.
Dr. Zhong Yijin, an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist at Sanhe Hospital who treated the man, told AsiaWire: “He said his ear hurt a lot, like something was scratching or crawling inside. “It caused a lot of discomfort,” the doctor said. Read more
Mali army loses 24 soldiers in Niger border attack (BBC)
Twenty-four soldiers have been killed in an attack by militants in eastern Mali, the country’s army has said.
Another 29 were also injured during a joint operation between troops from Mali and Niger in the Gao border region.
Mali’s army said 17 “terrorists” were killed and 100 suspects were being held in Tiloa, in Niger.
It comes weeks after 54 troops were killed in another attack – one of the deadliest in the past decade. Read more
Chile protests: President Piñera condemns police ‘abuses’ (BBC)
Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has acknowledged that the police committed “abuses” when dealing with protests which have been rocking the country for the past month.
He said “there was excessive use of force” in the police response to mass protests against inequality.
There would be “no impunity” for those who committed excesses and abuses, he added.

France returns Omar Tall’s sword to Senegal (BBC)
France has restored to Senegal a sabre that belonged to a 19th Century Islamic scholar and ruler.
It is part of a commitment to return to its former West African colonies key items of their cultural heritage.
The artefact originally belonged to the revered west African leader Omar Saidou Tall, who led an anti-colonial struggle against the French. Read more

Super Eagles’ Coach, Gernot Rohr says he has been vindicated in his decision to take Victor Osimhen to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals in the wake of his recent performances for the Super Eagles, reports africanfootball.com.
The Lille striker struck twice on Sunday as Nigeria won 4-2 in their 2021 qualifier in Lesotho, with Rohr saying the decision to take the then lesser-known Osimhen over the more experienced Kelechi Iheanacho had paid off.

The revered Brazil striker Pele scored his 1,000th goal on November 19, 1969 at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium in a match between his beloved Santos and local outfit Vasco de Gama, whose vast ranks of fans gave the iconic No. 10 a standing ovation.
That goal half a century ago was a beautifully converted penalty which escaped the grasp of the Vasco goalkeeper, sparking a pitch invasion by the press and culminating in Pele being paraded shoulder-high around the historic stadium by his teammates.

Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, on Monday said that players of Bendel Insurance Football Club and Edo Queens Football Club would now receive same salary.

Lack of Champions League begins to hit Man Utd finances (Punch)
Manchester United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League is beginning to erode the club’s finances, but increased commercial income helped the English giants post revenues of £135.4 million ($174 million) for the first quarter of the 2019-2020 season on Monday.
That represents a £400,000 increase on the same period for the previous year thanks to more sponsorship income and two extra home games compared to the same stage of last season.
