Planned Parenthood slams Netflix’s ‘‘Blonde’’ for contributing to ‘‘anti-abortion propaganda’’ (Variety)
After making its Netflix debut on Sept. 28, Andrew Dominick’s “Blonde” has received an intense wave of criticism among viewers for several reasons, largely centering on its depiction and fictionalization of Marilyn Monroe’s life, which has been described as “exploitative.” Now Planned Parenthood has released a statement against the film, alleging it contributes to “anti-abortion propaganda.”
In the film, based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same title, Monroe (played by Ana de Armas) is seen being forced to go through two illegal abortions, both of which leave a lasting scar on the Hollywood star. One scene in particular shows Monroe talking to a photoreal CGI version of her unborn fetus, which sympathetically questions her about its own fate asking, “You won’t hurt me this time, will you?”
With the film industry taking a deeper look at its depictions of abortion in light of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade on June 24, Planned Parenthood’s national director of arts and entertainment engagement Caren Spruch chimed in on the conversation, calling its portrayal potentially harmful.
“As film and TV shapes many people’s understanding of sexual and reproductive health, it’s critical these depictions accurately portray women’s real decisions and experiences. While abortion is safe, essential health care, anti-abortion zealots have long contributed to abortion stigma by using medically inaccurate descriptions of fetuses and pregnancy,” Spruch said in a statement shared with Variety. “Andrew Dominik’s new film, ‘Blonde,’ bolsters their message with a CGI-talking fetus, depicted to look like a fully-formed baby.” Read more
Venezuela releases 7 jailed Americans in exchange for 2 prisoners in U.S. custody (PBS)
In a rare softening of hostile relations, Venezuela has freed seven imprisoned Americans in exchange for the United States releasing two nephews of President Nicolás Maduro’s wife who had been jailed for years on drug smuggling conspiracy convictions, the White House said Saturday.
The swap of the Americans, including five oil executives held for nearly five years, follows months of back channel diplomacy by Washington’s top hostage negotiator and other U.S. officials — secretive talks with a major oil producer that took on greater urgency after sanctions on Russia put pressure on global energy prices.
The deal amounts to an unusual gesture of goodwill by Maduro as the socialist leader looks to rebuild relations with the U.S. after vanquishing most of his domestic opponents.
“I can’t believe it,” Cristina Vadell, the daughter of Tomeu Vadell, one of the freed Americans, said when contacted by The Associated Press on Saturday. Holding back tears of joy on her 31st birthday, she said: “This is the best birthday present ever. I’m just so happy.” Read more

Patty Mills sees ‘night and day’ difference with Nets culture this season (NYPost)
Patty Mills already has witnessed a “night and day different feeling” around the Nets from last season, calling the need for a culture shift “the foundation of all successful championship-winning teams.”
A former NBA champ with the Spurs in 2014, the 14-year veteran was credited earlier this week by Nets coach Steve Nash and All-Star teammate Kyrie Irving for his role in helping the team get back on track following a disappointing 2021-22 campaign.
“Look, I believe in all of that stuff,” Mills said earlier this week. “I think that it’s always been a part of who I am and just enjoying being around teammates and getting to know them a lot more. Maybe that comes from my Australian background on the Australian teams, but then to see it at a professional, elite level in San Antonio kind of took that to a whole other level.
“But trying to get to be the last team standing or just trying to do everything possible to do that, it starts with those relationships.” Read more
