Ayodele Joseph, Chief Medical Director of Ayodele Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State, has been accused of raping a patient who came for medical treatment.

The suspect was arraigned on a two-count charge of act of gross indecency, and rape contrary to sections 285 and 283 of the penal code.

Police report revealed that the defendant, (Dr. Ayodele), sedated the patient, who is a professional nurse and eventually had sexual intercourse with her outside her consent. Read more 

More troubles for students as JAMB’s biometric verification falters (Guardian)

No fewer than 80,000 candidates, on Saturday, took the rescheduled Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) across the country.

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said this while monitoring the exercise in Abuja. Benjamin said the 80,000 candidates could not sit the 2023 UTME within their scheduled time, owing to no fault of theirs and had to sit the rescheduled UTME across the country.

He said candidates affected include those, who were verified at their centres, but could not sit the examination, those who could not be biometrically verified and those with mismatched data, among others. Read more 

Naira drops against dollar by 0.17% (Vanguard)

The Naira depreciated against the dollar on Wednesday, exchanging for N463.02 at the investors’ and exporters’ window.

The rate represents a decrease of 0.17 per cent when compared to the N462.25 it exchanged to the dollar on Tuesday.

The open indicative rate closed at N463 to the dollar on Wednesday.

A spot exchange rate of N467 was used for trading within the day before it settled at N463.02. Read more 

Alleged Terrorism: Lagos arraigns Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate (ThisDay)

The Lagos State government has arraigned Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, Frederick Nkemdilim Nwajago, before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of a Lagos High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) for  alleged terrorism.

He was arraigned on a nine count charge in a suit marked no: LD/21505C/2023 by the state government.

The state counsel, Deputy Director in the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Jonathan Ogunsanya, who represented the Attorney General of Lagos State, Mr.Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN, informed the court to allow the defendant to take his plea. Read more

LASG engages steel makers to end building collapse (Punch)

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday trained more than 60 workers from 13 companies in the iron and steel sector as part of efforts to curb building collapse in the state.

According to the Director General, Lagos Safety Commission, Lanre Mojol, the training was important to avert future occurrence of building collapse in the state.

Represented by the Director, Administration and Human Resources in the commission, Taiwo Fesomu, he said, “It is all about making the workers in the iron and steel sector imbibe safety in their workplace. The essence of this training is about professionals in the iron and steel sector not cutting corners during the production of iron and steel materials and appropriate iron and steel be used during building construction so as to avert the collapse of buildings. Alleged N22b fraud: EFCC arrests ex-Power minister (Nation)

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a former Minister of Power, Sale Mamman over alleged N22b fraud.

The former minister was allegedly arrested early yesterday. He was subsequently detained at the headquarters of the anti-graft agency.

The arrest is said to be in connection with the Commission’s ongoing investigation into alleged corruption in the execution of some power projects. Read more 

4 robbery suspects arrested in Delta (Independent)

The operatives of the Delta State Police Command said they have arrested four suspected armed robbers in the State.

The Command disclosed that thirty 7.62 AK47 ammunition and 250 live cartridges were recovered during the operation that led to the arrest of the suspects.

The new Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command CP Wale Abass disclosed this in Asaba, even as he addressed officers and men of the command, stating that, it was very pertinent for all officers to carry out their duties diligently. Read more

Sudan: JAMB to assist returnee students get into Nigerian varsities (Leadership)

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said that it will provide necessary support to ensure that Nigerian students evacuated from the war-torn Sudan are integrated into the nation’s universities.

The registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, made this known in Abuja when the chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, led others to the examination body’s headquarters, to discuss modalities for integrating the affected students into tertiary institutions in the country.

Oloyede, who empathised with the students, commended NiDCOM for the effective handling of their evacuations, adding that JAMB would ensure the desired support. Read more

Rita Lee, the singer known as Brazil’s “Queen Of Rock” and original member of the rock band Os Mutantes, has died at the age of 75.

Lee passed away on Tuesday (May 9), as confirmed by her family in a post on her official Instagram page.

“We communicate the passing of Rita Lee, at her residence in the capital of São Paulo, at the end of the night, surrounded by all the love of her family, as she always wanted,” a statement published on her official Instagram account read in Portuguese. Read more

Dolph Lundgren has secretly been battling cancer for the past eight years.

In an interview for In Depth with Graham Bensinger that aired on Wednesday, the Rocky IV actor revealed that he was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015.

After surgery, Lundgren remained symptom-free until he made a visit to a doctor in his native Sweden in 2020 and they discovered tumours in his kidney and liver. He was given a terminal diagnosis and two to three years to live. Read more

‘‘Another provocation!’’: Georgia balks as Russia ends visa regime (AlJazeera)

Russian President Vladimir Putin has abolished visas for Georgian nationals and lifted a 2019 ban on direct flights to the South Caucasus nation, a move that comes amid rocky relations between the two countries and that was quickly denounced by Georgia’s president as a “provocation”.

Announced on the Russian government’s website, the move introduces a 90-day visa-free period starting May 15.

In a statement, Russia’s transport ministry said Russian airlines would operate seven flights weekly between Moscow and Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi. Read more

Islami Jihad commander killed by Israeli air strike in Gaza (IrishExaminer)

A leading Islamic Jihad commander was among 23 people killed by a series of airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, according to the Israeli military.

Thursday’s strikes – which follow rockets fired from Gaza the previous day – also killed two other senior militants and at least 10 civilians.

The Israeli military said it targeted the commander of Islamic Jihad’s rocket squad in an attack on a building in the southern Gaza Strip.

They said Ali Ghali was hiding in an apartment and that two other militants from the group were killed alongside him at a Qatari-built residential complex in Khan Younis. Read more

Organisers of Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have unveiled a plan for the success of the ninth edition of the event, which holds on May 27, 2023 in Okpekpe, Estako East Local Council of Edo state.

According to Director of Media and Activation, Dare Esan, the race’s secretariat will open on May 22 to begin the final countdown to the first gold label 10km road race in Nigeria.

Esan said the Secretariat will open in Auchi, near Okpekpe, five days before the event to prepare, among other things, for the arrival of technical and medical equipment, as well as the arrival of the elite athletes.” Read more

The Knicks denied the Heat’s first attempt to become just the second No. 8 seed to reach the conference finals and sent the series back to Miami for Game 6 on Friday night.

Mike Ballard says he feels like an “honorary member of the UAE team” despite competing in USA colours at the ICF International Canoe Federation Canoe Sprint World Cup in Hungary.

The American paddler, who is now based in Dubai having moved from Abu Dhabi earlier this year, has been training with the recently-formed national team in Jumeirah in the lead-up to the event.
