A businesswoman, Modupeoluwa Oyetoso, has been mourning the death of her fiancé, who was shot by suspected herdsmen at the Lanlete area of the Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the lovers were returning from the farm when the four suspects waylaid them around 5 pm.

While the fiancé was attempting to manoeuvre his way to escape the attack, one of the gunmen reportedly shot him.

“The bullet hit my fiancé at the back of his head. I didn’t know what to do, as the blood was rushing out of his head. I thought I could save him, so I attempted applying pressure to stop the blood, but I couldn’t do it because the car, which was still in motion, was about to hit a tree,” Oyetoso said during an interview with @twinklefiles on Youtube. Council, residents lock horns over siting of cemetery in Ejigbo (Guardian)

Residents are still up in arms against the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) authorities over plans to site a cemetery in Morning Star Street, Pipeline area of Ejigbo, Lagos State. Some residents, last Thursday, staged a peaceful protest at the council secretariat to reject the move.

According to the residents, the portion of land earmarked for the project in the densely populated area, which is currently being used as football pitch, could be converted to schools or hospitals and not a burial ground, since the council’s primary healthcare centre and public school is far from the community. UNILAG security presence heightens as Soyombo resumes (Punch)

Security in and around the University of Lagos Senate building and council office was beefed up on Monday  as the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Omololu Soyombo, addresses workers of the university.

Soyombo, solicited the support of the workers, adding that he had resumed effectively as the acting vice chancellor.

Club donates land to build school in Ikorodu (Guardian)

Members of the Golden Dames Club of Ikorodu has donated an acre of land at Oloye Estate, Eruwen, Ikorodu, to the community to erect a public secondary school.

At the handover of deed of gift on the land, president of the club, Mrs Oluwagbemiga Temidayo Benson, said: “We observed that the closest secondary school is about 10km away. In line with our club’s objective of service to humanity, we decided to gift the land to build a school in the community.”

She disclosed that a secondary school in the estate would reduce dangers children are exposed to while enduring travels from their homes to far distant locations. “We enjoin all stakeholders to team up to ensure that the public secondary school is built,” she added. Read more

Chinese loan: Terms dangerous, say Reps as FG confirms sovereignty clause (Punch)

The House of Representatives on Monday faulted the sovereignty clause in Nigeria’s loan agreement with China, saying it was dangerous.

The Chairman of the  House Committee on Treaties, Protocols and Agreements, Nicholas Ossai, who stated this in Abuja at the investigative hearing  on  external loans and commercial agreements, said Nigeria’s loan agreement with the Asian country was being governed by Chinese laws.

He said despite the fact that the Federal Government in  2014 signed  an Executive Order providing guidelines on  waiver of sovereign immunity during loan and commercial agreement negotiations, Nigerian officials had been violating the order. Read more

20 years after, Ogun community gets transformer (Guardian)

After 20 years, residents of Larufi community in Remo North Local Government area of Ogun State have been provided with 500KVA transformer to end their years of suffering. The transformer was provided by the of Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA).

While playing host to the officials of the agency in his palace in Ode-Remo, the Alaye Ode of Ode-Remo, Oba Amidu Osho expressed gratitude to the state government and World Bank for the gesture. He revealed that the community had suffered neglect and experienced slow pace of economic development due to lack of basic infrastructure.

Mobile Courts convict 131 erring drivers in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa (Vanguard)

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) RS4 Command, Jos, says no fewer than 131 erring drivers have been convicted by mobile courts for various traffic offences in Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa between July 23 and Aug. 14.

Dr Kayode Olagunju, the Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of the three states, made this known on Monday.

Olagunju, in a statement by Mr Terry Hoomlong, Acting Zonal Public Education Officer, however, cautioned road users against reckless driving during the forthcoming “Ember Months” to prevent all avoidable road traffic crashes and fatalities.

Sons accuse fashion boss Nygard of paying ‘known sex worker’ to rape them as teens (CBC)

Two of Peter Nygard’s sons launched a new lawsuit filed Sunday, saying their fashion executive father set them up to be raped by his girlfriend — a “known sex worker” —  when they were teens.

Nygard, 79, is a Winnipeg-based clothing manufacturer. His companies, in the past, were worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Dozens of women have recently come forward alleging he raped them.

The civil lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. It names three of Nygard’s companies. His sons, who are not identified, are seeking an undisclosed amount of damages and have requested a jury trial. Read more

Louisiana man goes from hospital security guard to medical student (BBC)

A former security guard has returned to the hospital where he used to work, but this time as a medical student.

Eleven years ago, Russell Ledet, 34, was a security guard at Baton Rouge General Medical Center, studying chemistry on flashcards on his shift.

Now, the ex-Navy intelligence officer has a PhD and is working towards a joint MD/MBA at Tulane University in his home-state of Louisiana.

“It’s a dream come true,” he told the BBC.

His story of full-circle success has been making headlines, about a year after he rose to national attention for organising a photo of 15 black med students in front of the former slave quarters at the Whitney Plantation, a slavery museum in Louisiana. Read more

England’s last major coal mine shuts down as renewable power takes over (Metro)

Environmental groups have welcomed the news that England’s last major coal mine is shutting down, but some say it will make the country more reliant on Russia.  Banks Mining, which employs 250 people, announced it is ceasing operations at the Bradley Mine in County Durham. The closure of the open cast pit, which produces around 150,000 tonnes of coal a year, marks the end of an era for British industry.  It comes after the company was refused permission to extend the site, which was blockaded early this year by Extinction Rebellion protesters. Bill Morneau: Canada finance minister quits amid charity scandal (CBC)

Bill Morneau has announced his resignation as finance minister, and will also step down as the MP for Toronto Centre, after meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier Monday.

“I met with the prime minister today to inform him that I did not plan to run again in the next federal election,” Morneau told reporters Monday evening. “It has never been my plan to run for more than two federal election cycles.”

Both Morneau and Trudeau are being investigated by Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion after the Liberal government gave WE Charity a $43.53-million contract to administer a $900-million student grant program despite both their families having close ties to the charity.  Read more

A former CIA officer and contract linguist for the FBI has been charged with spying for China, including by disclosing secret tradecraft and information on sources to intelligence officers, according to court documents unsealed Monday.

Alexander Yuk Ching Ma, 67, was arrested last week in a scheme that involved a relative who had also worked for the

CIA, the U.S. Justice Department said on Monday.

After an undercover operation, prosecutors say he accepted an envelope with $2,000 US in exchange for information about his past espionage activities. He told a law enforcement officer who was posing as a Chinese intelligence officer that he wanted to see the “motherland” succeed, prosecutors said. Read more

Three top producers of the Ellen DeGeneres Show have been fired amid allegations of misconduct and sexual harassment.

Ms DeGeneres announced the overhaul in a video meeting with staff, and said an internal investigation was under way.

In a message to staff she said she was “so sorry for what this has become,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Thousands pack into water park in Wuhan for post-lockdown music festival (Metro)

Pictures show thousands of music fans crammed together at a pool party in the city of Wuhan over the weekend.

Partygoers in the Chinese city, where coronavirus first emerged late last year, packed out the popular Wuhan Maya Beach Water Park and enjoyed DJ sessions as well as swimming and pool games.

The water park reopened in June, after being closed due to the city’s strict 76-day lockdown. Local media reports that capacity at the park is currently capped at 50%. Read more
