Chima Anolue, a lecturer at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, got more than he bargained for when he got into an argument with his domestic worker on Friday night.

The deceased, who lectured at Psychology Department, Faculty of Social Sciences of the institution, had reportedly scolded his killer for letting the rice he was cooking get burnt, unknown to him that the incident would lead to his untimely end.

Angered by the disrespectful attitude of his employee, Anolue was said to have slapped the domestic worker, who in turn engaged him in a fight.

The suspect, who initially denied killing his master, confessed to the crime after he was tortured by local vigilante guards. Read more

No fewer than four persons were confirmed dead while 11 others sustained injuries in a lone accident involving a Foton bus at the Aiyetoro axis on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Spokesperson, Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, Mr. Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta, yesterday.

Akinbiyi explained that the accident occurred at 9:59a.m., and was caused by tyre burst, which led the commercial bus to summersaul into a ditch. Read more 

Plan to purchase N40b SUVs splits lawmakers (Sun)

Twenty four hours after The Sun exclusively reported plans by the two chambers of the National Assembly- the Senate and the House of Representatives to spend N40 billion on Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) for members, new facts have emerged.

The Sun in the report had revealed plans to purchase 107 2023 model of Toyota Land Cruiser for senators and 2023 Toyota Prado for members of the House of Representatives.

The planned purchase, it was further reported, would be different from the official vehicles expected to be procured for the four presiding officers of the National Assembly, namely Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass and Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau; and Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu. Tinubu looks beyond military to end insecurity in North (Leadership)

The Tinubu administration will, in the coming weeks, unveil an initiative that will address insurgency and poverty, among other challenges confronting Nigerians, especially those living in the Northern region,  Vice President Kashim Shettima has said.

The vice president, who disclosed this yesterday in chat with journalists while on a condolence visit to Kano State, stated that the president’s initiative is a non-military approach.

The Lagos State Government has urged residents and stakeholders to complement its tree-planting initiative to achieve the goal of a greener city.

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Omobolaji Gaji, made the call at the weekend during the annual tree planting commemoration anchored by the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency at Alausa, Ikeja.

N500b palliative: Senate denies budget padding allegation (Tribune)

The leadership of the Senate has dismissed allegations that it padded the N500 billion palliative budget by over N200 billion.

An online platform (not Tribune) in its  publication alleged that over N200 billion not in the initial estimate was inserted into the budget for what it called phoney projects.

Reacting to the media report, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu said the report was bereft of facts and meant to impugn the integrity of the leadership of the Senate. Read more

Australian sailor and his dog survive 2 months at sea (BBC)

An Australian sailor who survived two months in the Pacific Ocean by eating raw fish and drinking rainwater is “stable and very well”, a doctor says.

Sydney resident Tim Shaddock, 51, and his dog Bella left Mexico for French Polynesia in April, but their boat was damaged by a storm several weeks later.

They were rescued by a trawler this week after a helicopter spotted them.

The doctor aboard the tuna trawler told Australia’s 9News that the man had “normal vital signs”. Read more

Ronan Keating’s brother Ciaran has been killed in a tragic car accident (Mirror)

Ronan Keating’s older brother has been named locally as the victim of a car crash on the N5 near Swinford on Saturday. Ciaran was the older brother of Boyzone star and The One Show host Ronan and was in his 50s when he died.

He was travelling with his wife, Ann Marie to watch their son, Ruairí play for Cork City FC in a clash with Sligo Rovers, when the collision took place, it’s been reported. The fatal car accident occurred at around 3.55pm on Saturday with Ciara suffering fatal injuries in the collision on the N5 at Ballymiles on a stretch of road known as an accident black-spot.

Ciaran’s wife Ann Marie was taken to Mayo University Hospital to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries while the male driver of the second vehicle is understood to be receiving treatment for serious injuries in hospital. German teen latest caught vandalizing Italy’s Colosseum (DW)

A 17-year-old German tourist was caught allegedly defacing the Colosseum in Rome on Saturday, the third act of vandalism against the World Heritage Site in recent weeks.

A teacher accompanied the student at the time of the incident, according to the Italian ANSA news agency.

The boy was stopped by the Italian domestic police, the carabinieri, who were called in by the Colosseum’s supervisory staff. Read more
