It was a cool evening at the Lafia township stadium on Thursday, November 26 and Mrs Justina Agbumi sat with other fun seekers to watch the evening training of Nasarawa United football players.

But while everyone else seemed to be having fun as they watched the professional footballers juggle the ball, the same did not seem to be the case with Justina as she sat quietly, looking sober.

Her pensive mien was in contrast with the gay mood of the nine-month-old baby in her bosom as he sucked away playfully on a bottle of soft drink.

Justina has virtually turned into a recluse after the painful death of her husband and her abominable act with a young man her husband had with another woman outside wedlock. Read more

Parag Agrawal: Why Indian-born CEOs dominate Silicon Valley (BBC)

Parag Agrawal, who was appointed this week as Twitter’s CEO, has joined at least a dozen other Indian-born techies in the corner offices of the world’s most influential Silicon Valley companies.

Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, and the top bosses of IBM, Adobe, Palo Alto Networks, VMWare and Vimeo are all of Indian descent.

Indian-origin people account for just about 1% of the US population and 6% of Silicon Valley’s workforce – and yet are disproportionately represented in the top brass. Why?

“No other nation in the world ‘trains’ so many citizens in such a gladiatorial manner as India does,” says R Gopalakrishnan, former executive director of Tata Sons and co-author of The Made in India Manager.

“From birth certificates to death certificates, from school admissions to getting jobs, from infrastructural inadequacies to insufficient capacities,” growing up in India equips Indians to be “natural managers,” he adds, quoting the famous Indian corporate strategist C K Prahalad. Read more

Africa requires $7.1Trn ‘New Deal’ to recover from pandemic – ECA (Sun)

With many African countries struggling from the shackles of debt servicing amid downward economic trend occasioned by COVID-19, a ‘New Deal’ worth 7.1 trillion dollars has been suggested as the only solution.

He likened the proposed New Deal to a similar deal by the US between 1933 and 1939 during the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt.

He pointed out that the American deal then was worth 41.7 billion dollars, an amount which he said now equalled 653 billion dollars. Read more

Burkina Faso’s 1.3m displaced people increasingly fall victim to terrorists (VOA)

Worsening security in Burkina Faso is hitting the country’s 1.3 million internally displaced people (IDPs), with many being forced to flee their places of refuge for a second time. One refugee camp was closed after it was visited by Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. And rights groups say they are investigating reports terrorists infiltrated another camp to commit acts of sexual abuse.

As security in Burkina Faso has deteriorated in recent months, state control outside of major cities has diminished and terrorist attacks by groups linked to Islamic State, al-Qaida and local bandits are going up. Increasingly, people displaced by the conflict are falling victim to terrorists in areas they had once fled to for safety.

In June, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie visited the Goudoubo refugee camp in Burkina Faso’s war-torn Sahel province to mark World Refugee Day. During her speech at the camp, the special envoy for the U.N.’s refugee agency (UNHCR) said, “This is where the humanity and decency of the world is measured. Where human strength and resilience are most clearly and starkly seen. Not in the world’s gleaming capitals, but in places like this.”

Last month the Goudoubo refugee camp was closed. After incursions by terrorist groups at the camp, security forces were unable to guarantee safety. More than 11,000 refugees living there have since been relocated to the nearby town of Dori. Read more

France, Europeans working to open joint Afghan mission (Independent)

Several European countries are working on opening up a joint diplomatic mission in Afghanistan that would enable their ambassadors to return to the country, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Saturday.

Western countries have been grappling with how to engage with the Taliban after they took over Afghanistan in a lightning advance in August as US-led forces were completing their pullout.

The United States and other Western countries shut their embassies and withdrew their diplomats as the Taliban seized Kabul, following which the militants declared an interim government whose top members are under US and UN sanctions.

“We are thinking of an organisation between several European countries… a common location for several Europeans, which would allow our ambassadors to be present,” Macron told reporters in Doha before heading to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Read more

UCI Track Champions League: Katie Archibald wins in London to make it three in a row (Eurosport)

Eurosport commentator Carlton Kirby described it as “a spectacular performance from an amazing athlete. Katie Archibald is in charge.”

The athlete herself saw things slightly differently, more a matter of necessity than one reflecting domination.

“There was only one way to go,” she told Eurosport, after another elimination race win in the UCI Track Champions League, her third in a row. “When I saw Kirsten [Wild] on the black line during those last five eliminations, I was just thinking: ‘Imagine how much pain she’s in. You’ve got to go.'”

And off she went, roared on by the home fans, to close out the heads-up in a style not dissimilar to the way she beat Wild in Mallorca last month. Read more
