Court jails gospel singer, 8 others for cybercrime (Punch)

A Federal High Court in Ilorin, Kwara State, has jailed a self-styled gospel singer, Moses Otitoju, and eight others for offences bordering on cybercrime, conspiracy, and misappropriation of funds.

Otitoju was convicted alongside Ayodele Joseph, Adeoye Joseph, and Abubakar Abdulmalik, all arraigned by the anti-graft agency on similar charges.

The offences were brought against them by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Read more 

LAWMA clears illegal dump site in Ketu (Guardian)

The enforcement team of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) cleared an illegal dump site in Ketu on Saturday.

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the LAWMA enforcement team conducted the clearance operations at an illegal dump site located behind 68, Oduntan Street, Ketu.

According to Wahab, this action targets an unauthorized waste disposal area that has been causing environmental hazards in the neighborhood. Read more 

CDS Welcomes Training on Stress Management, PTSD (VON)

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa says training on stress management, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) awareness, and emotional intelligence are crucial to the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

The CDS stated this during the First Bi-annual sensitization training by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Stress Management, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Emotional Intelligence for de-inducted troops and personnel in the theatres of operations, particularly for the troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY).

A statement by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Shittu, says the training was held at the Headquarters 8 Division’s Auditorium, Giginya Cantonment Sokoto on 18 July 2025. Read more 

Ondo students threaten showdown as suspect in undergraduates’ murders dies in Police custody (Vanguard)

The students of Ondo State-owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, have given the Police an ultimatum over the gruesome murder of two undergraduates, following the death of the prime suspect, Femi Oladele, in custody.

Oladele, who was the landlord of the victims, was arrested by detectives of the Ondo State Police Command at a hotel in Akungba-Akoko.

Presidency slams ADC over Buhari’s burial remarks (Nation)

The Presidency has fired back at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its recent statement accusing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of exploiting the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari for political image laundering, describing the opposition party’s claims as “shameless” and “obnoxious.”

Reacting through a statement on Saturday, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Mr. Sunday Dare, the Presidency accused the ADC and its leading figures of “disrespecting Buhari and dancing on his grave for relevance.”

“Let it be said clearly: the ADC is the one exploiting Buhari’s death for political attention, not this government. From Atiku and El-Rufai’s choreographed arrival in Daura — greeted with chants seeking to make political capital from the solemnity of the moment — to this disgraceful press statement, the ADC has shown itself to be utterly shameless,” it stated. Group urges Tinubu to immortalise ex-president Shagari (Leadership)

A group, Sokoto Heritage Reloaded Initiative, has resuscitated the call for President Bola Tinubu, to fulfill a national promise made by the Buhari administration to name a national monument after late President Shehu Shagari, Nigeria’s first executive president.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of the group, Professor Uthman Abdulqadir restated that Shagari was not just a leader, but also a symbol of humility, integrity and statesmanship.

He recalled President Shagari’s vision for Nigeria, especially in the area of education, saying it was during his tenure that the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was first conceived to democratise access to higher education. Read more 

South Korea ex-leader Yoon indicted as martial law probe continues (AlJazeera)

Disgraced former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been indicted over his declaration of martial law last year as investigators widened an insurrection probe.

The prosecution indicted Yoon on charges including abuse of power and obstruction of special official duties, prosecutor Park Ji-young told reporters on Saturday.

Park said Yoon also did not follow the required procedure to declare martial law, including holding a meeting with all government cabinet members. Read more 

Several critically injured in LA after vehicle driven into crowd (BBC)

At least 28 people have been injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Seven people have been critically injured and six are a serious condition, the LA Fire Department (LAFD) said.

It said the incident occurred at 02:00 local time (09:00 GMT) near a nightclub on North Vermont Avenue, close to the intersection with Santa Monica Boulevard – which is famous for its nightlife. Read more

The lineup for the inaugural SomeKinda R&B Festival has been revealed. The two-day festival is set for Aug. 30-31 at Montebello Park in St. Catharines, Ontario.

Pope Leo XIV receives call from Netanyahu after Gaza church attack (CNA) 

Pope Leo XIV received a phone call Friday from Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, following yesterday’s Israeli army attack on Holy Family Church in Gaza.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the pope received the call at Castel Gandolfo, where he is on vacation.

On July 17, the Israeli army struck with a projectile Holy Family Parish, the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip, which had been used as a shelter for more than 600 people since the beginning of the war in October 2023. Read more 

New EU sanctions against Russia take effect (RT)

The EU’s 18th sanctions package against Russia over the Ukraine conflict, targeting Moscow’s energy and banking sectors, has gone into force, the bloc has announced.

The new restrictions became official after the relevant regulations were published in the EU’s Official Journal on Saturday.

The package was adopted by the 27-member bloc on Friday after Slovakia, which had opposed the curbs, received guarantees from the European Commission regarding the availability of gas and oil. Read more

Nigeria international Ademola Lookman is facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a calf injury during Atalanta’s training session on Wednesday, as transfer talks with Inter Milan continue to heat up, Bold Sports reports.

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, relayed by SOSFanta, Lookman felt discomfort in his calf after training and later experienced pain while striking the ball. The forward is now expected to undergo further medical tests to determine the severity of the issue.
