How Lagosians have been mistaking COVID-19 for malaria – Commissioner (Punch)

The Lagos Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says the state is recording cases of people treating themselves for malaria only for them to realise after testing that it is COVID-19.

Medical experts however say the best way to distinguish malaria from COVID-19 is to get tested.

“We are seeing too many cases of people treating themselves for malaria multiple times and only realise it’s COVID-19.”

The commissioner said sometimes, such people realised the error “too late” and sometimes “show up too sick. Read more

LASEMA demolishes buildings gutted by fire in Lagos (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said 30 shops, six bungalows destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon in Lagos had been pulled down.

The Director-General, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, made this known after the LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Fire Service and other agencies put out the fire which started at 2 p.m.

He explained that the buildings, some shops and other property were destroyed in the fire incident which occurred at No 16, Ladipo St., Mushin, Lagos. Read more

Police arrest Lagos driver for allegedly beating passenger to death (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a commercial driver, Habeeb Quadri, for allegedly assaulting a passenger, Emmanuel James, in the Surulere area of the state, resulting in his death.

Quadri was arrested by the Bode Thomas Police Division on Thursday with eyewitnesses claiming that the driver hit James in the chest over an issue bordering on money during which the deceased slumped. The scuffle occurred at the Bode Thomas Junction.

Our correspondent was told that the incident caused confusion at the junction as other passengers and passersby tried to revive James to no avail. Read more

Lawmaker raises alarm as 14 drown on Badagry waterways (Vanguard)

A Lagos Lawmaker, Mr David Setonji, has raised alarm over the drowning of 14 persons en route to the coastal city last Wednesday following the total collapse of Lagos-Badagry expressway.

At least 10 persons died and four others missing after a boat en route Badagry capsized at Kirikiri, Lagos on Wednesday.

Setonji, member representing Badagry Constituency II in Lagos House of Assembly, told NAN on Saturday that the total collapse of Badagry road forced the victims to undertake the ill-fated journey on waterways. Read more

Lagos churches, mosques reopen Friday, bars, clubs stay closed – Sanwo-Olu (Punch)

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says worship centres in the state will be allowed to reopen from Friday, August 7.

He said Muslim worshippers are allowed to begin their services from Friday while Christian worshippers could begin their Sunday services on August 9, noting that the permission applies to Churches that have their main worship days on Saturdays.

He, however, warned that the religious centres would only be allowed to operate at 50 per cent of their capacity, noting that the safety protocols released by the government must be strictly adhered to. Read more

Fire guts 30 shops, seven houses in Lagos market (Punch)

Seven residential buildings and 30 adjoining shops were destroyed on Saturday by a fire that broke out at a market on Ladipo Street, Mushin area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that there was a spark from a wire when power was restored around 1pm. The wire was said to have fallen from a pole on a matress and sparked off the fire.

“Someone tried to pour water on the fire but it fuelled and started spreading,” an eyewitness, Sola Oluremi, told our correspondent. Read more

Halt loans agreements with China pending scrutiny of conditions (Guardian)

With China’s glaring lack of tolerance for sleaze and vague financial transactions, not a few were riled by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi’s sensational claim that the Asian giant will not approve Nigeria’s request for loans if the National Assembly (NASS) continues its ongoing probe.

Despite China being one of the world’s most regulated economies, Amaechi, at an investigative hearing of the House of Representatives Committee on Treaties and Protocols, last week, asked the lawmakers to halt the probe of the $500m loan from the Chinese government to finance some rail projects across the country.

He alleged that some sections of the country’s rail lines “will suffer” if China stops giving out loans to Nigeria upon sensing a disagreement between the executive and the legislature. Read more

Elderly lion soulmates put to sleep at the same time so neither had to live without the other (Metro)

A zoo euthanised an ailing elderly lion couple together so neither of the animal soulmates had to live without one another. Hubert and his partner Alisa were put to sleep at LA Zoo on Thursday. Both animals were 21 years old.

A zoo spokesman said the African lions were both suffering from declining health and age-related issues that had left them with an increasingly-poor quality of life. Hubert was born at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, while Kalisa came from Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo.

The pair met at Woodland Park, and were instantly smitten with one another. They moved to Los Angeles Zoo together in 2014, where they had lived happily until their health began to decline. Read more

Tsitsi Dangarembga, an award-winning Zimbabwean author and Booker Prize nominee, has been released on bail after her arrest during an anti-government protest.

Eleven other people detained on Friday – including Fadzayi Mahere, a lawyer and spokeswoman for the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change-Alliance party – were also freed on Saturday.

Nasa SpaceX crew return: Astronauts set for ocean splashdown (BBC)

US astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken have undocked their Dragon Endeavour capsule from the space station to begin their return to Earth.

The pair are expected to splash down off the coast of Florida just after 14:40 local time (19:40 BST) on Sunday.

A successful landing would mean America once again has a fully serviceable, fully certified means of getting its own people into orbit and back.

Two arrested for ‘attempted murder’ after ‘racially aggravated’ hit-and-run attack on NHS worker (BBC)

Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a ‘racially aggravated’ hit-and-run attack on an NHS worker in Bristol.

A health worker, 21, sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose and cheekbone, after being ‘deliberately’ struck by a car on Monks Park Avenue, Horfield at 4.30 pm on Wednesday, July 22.

The incident is being treated as a racially-aggravated attack due to the racist language used by the occupants of the car, Avon and Somerset Police said. Read more

Conservative MP arrested on suspicion of rape (BBC)

A Conservative MP has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

According to the Sunday Times, the allegations were made by a former parliamentary employee.

The Met Police said the allegations relate to four separate incidents alleged to have taken place between July 2019 and January 2020. The MP has been released on bail.

The Conservative Party said it “takes all allegations of this nature extremely seriously”. Read more

Former Technical Director Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Kashimawo Laloko, has expressed disappointment over the frequent employment of foreign coaches for the senior football national teams, saying that these expatriates succeed because they are given enough time.

Laloko stated that the huge salary given to the expatriates was a waste of resources, advising that it should be ploughed back to encourage indigenous coaches to also blossom.

Speaking to The Guardian last week, Laloko explained that the reason why Clemens Westerhof, touted as Nigeria’s most successful coach, excelled was because he had enough time and support given to him in order to qualify the country for its first World Cup in USA ‘94. Read more

Former Middlesbrough boss appointed as Birmingham manager (Vanguard)

Aitor Karanka has been appointed as the new head coach of Championship side Birmingham City.

The Spaniard, who has signed a three-year deal, replaces compatriot Pep Clotet, who was dismissed with four games of the Championship remaining.
