Twenty-year-old Deborah Doofan had many dreams. She planned to graduate from the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, with honours in 2026, become a first-class banker in one of Nigeria’s prestigious banks at 25, get married two years after, and have a beautiful home with three lovely kids and a doting husband.

According to her elder brother, Prince, she vowed to help their family out of penury. But her dreams never materialised as her life was cut short by poor medical facilities.

Deborah was in an emergency and was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Surulere, Lagos, in the wee hours of Thursday, March 16, 2023, but the federal hospital could not provide her a bed space. She was left out in the cold; in the backseat of a car right in front of the hospital’s emergency centre, where she died. Read more

Funke Akindele deletes political post on Instagram (DailyTrust)

Nollywood star Funke Akindele has removed all political posts from her Instagram page.

Following losing the recently held gubernatorial elections, the actress-turned-politician removed all social media accounts related to her and Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, better known as Jandor, who stood for governor and deputy governor of Lagos state under the People’s Democratic Party.

Remember that Akindele lost her polling unit 019, Ita Aro square, Ijimu ward in Ikorodu, Lagos State, to the current governor of the All Progressives Party, Babajide Sanwo-Olu (APC).

Results from the voting unit show that the PDP received 19 votes, the APC received 77 votes, and the Labour Party received 3 votes. Read more

Maritime workers congratulate Sanwo-Olu (Nation)

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN)  led by Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has congratulated the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was reelected in the gubernatorial election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on  March 18.

According to the union in a statement, the state election, which was keenly contested, left Governor Sanwo-Olu winning the election on a very wide margin; this which gave him an edge over other contestants was a testimony of the love showered on him as the Chief Executive of the state by the people.

“We, in the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, wish to felicitate with the amiable Lagos State Governor on his well-deserved victory during the poll in the state,” Adeyanju Said. Read more

Youth leader, 4 others killed in fresh herders attack in Benue (Vanguard)

A youth leader and four others have been reportedly killed in a fresh suspected armed herdsmen attack on two communities in Agatu and Otukpo Local Government Areas, LGAs, of Benue state.

It was gathered that the affected communities in the latest incidents which occurred Thursday evening were Atakpa in Agatu LGA where four persons lost their lives and Iwili community in Otukpo LGA where a local farmer was also said to have been killed in his farm at about the same time in an unprovoked attack.

A source in Agatu disclosed that the armed men stormed the community at about 5 pm and started shooting sporadically. Read more

The Presidency has described as outrageous and fake, a report attributed to President Muhammadu Buhari quoting him as saying that he won’t hand over to president-elect Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

A statement by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu said yesterday; “How can you vigorously campaign for somebody, vote for him and then say you won’t hand it over to him? This beggars belief.”

He said the situation of the Sahara Reporters was pretty pathetic since their ownership is politically partisan in today’s politics, and a loser in the presidential election. Read more

CBN confirms evacuation of banknotes to banks (Independent)

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has confirmed the evacuation of banknotes from its vaults to commercial banks across the country as part of a coordinated effort to ease the circulation of banknotes of various denominations.

The CBN has also directed all commercial banks to open for operation on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department of the CBN, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, disclosed this in Abuja, late on Friday, March 23, 2023, stating that a substantial amount of money, in various denominations, had been received by the commercial banks for onward circulation to their respective customers. Commissioner decries rise in TB cases in Plateau (Guardian)

Plateau health commissioner, Dr Nimkong Ndam, on Friday expressed worry over the rise in cases of Tuberculosis (TB) in the state.

Ndam spoke at a sensitisation and screening to mark the 2023 World Tuberculosis Day, in Gyel, Jos South Local Government Area.

Represented by the Director of Public Health, Dr Mafwalal Masok, Ndam said that 219 out of 100,000 persons in the state suffered from TB. Read more

Rain wreaks havoc in Kwara, 2 escape death (Channels)

Two occupants in a moving car narrowly escaped death on Thursday evening along Unity Road in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital when a political signpost fell on their vehicle during torrential rain.

The rain which fell for a few minutes and was accompanied by a strong windstorm wreaked havoc in the city damaging political signposts, cars, buildings, electric poles and wires.

Channels Television reports that the rain which was accompanied by a strong windstorm also damaged buildings in some parts of Ilorin and Oke-Ero Local government areas of the state. Read more

Gwyneth Paltrow has insisted that she was the “victim” of a skiing collision with a retired optometrist during an accident at a resort in Utah.

The Oscar-winning actress was speaking while giving evidence in a civil case brought by Terry Sanderson, who is suing the actress for $300,000 (£245,000) over the incident at Deer Valley in 2016.

Mr Sanderson, 76, says he was left with several broken ribs and a severe concussion, as well as mental and physical injuries after Paltrow “slammed” into him on the slopes. Read more

The storyline follows her life and transformation following the event.

2 men cleared of being ‘‘spotters’’ in Amir Khan gunpoint robbery of diamond watch (ITV)

Two men have been cleared of being “spotters” in the plot to rob former world boxing champion Amir Khan of his £70,000 diamond-encrusted watch at gunpoint.
