The Ogun state police command has arrested one Lekan Sunday for allegedly raping a prophetess in a church in the state.

They were able to apprehend the 40-year-old man on Monday, although he is said to have committed the crime last Thursday.

Armed with weapons, the suspect was said to have broken into the Orioke Aanu Oluwa Gbohunmi church in the Ilogbo Adu neighborhood of Kemta, Abeokuta. Read more 

Tinubu directs phased take-off of varsities approved by last administration (Nation)

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Education to stagger the take-off of some of the federal tertiary institutions established by the previous administration.

Minister of Education, Dr Mamman Tahir, who disclosed this to journalists at the State House, Abuja after meeting with President Tinubu on Wednesday, explained that the decision was based on some considerations, including funding.

Tahir told journalists at the briefing that he visited the President to update him on developments in his ministry, including issues surrounding a stakeholders’ conference scheduled for today (Thursday), appointments of heads of agencies and boards of tertiary institutions. Read more 

Atiku asks Supreme Court to reject technicality, overrule Tinubu on fresh evidence (Channels)

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25 presidential poll, Atiku Abubakar, has again asked the Supreme Court to jettison technicality and grant his application for leave to tender fresh and additional evidence to support his claim that President Bola Tinubu, submitted forged documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Atiku predicated his plea on the grounds that presenting forged documents by any candidate, especially by one for the highest office in the land, is a grave constitutional issue that must not be encouraged.

The former Vice President stated this in his reply on point of law to Tinubu’s objection to grant leave for Atiku to present the fresh evidence before the apex court. Read more 

Lagos State Police Command commences orderly room trial for cop  caught on camera shooting in Ladipo Market (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an orderly room trial for the cop who was shooting a gun at Ladipo Market in the state.

The command said the person identified in a viral video shown shooting an AK47 rifle in Ladipo Market was Inspector Istifanus Kwanchi, serving in a Lagos squadron of the Mobile Police (MOPOL). 

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Idowu Owohunwa, then ordered the immediate commencement of disciplinary proceedings against the officer for his unprofessional, unethical and dangerous behaviour. Read more 

Eye centre organises contests to mark anniversary (Guardian)

Viewpoint Specialist Eye Centre has celebrated its 10 years anniversary with a series of events such as an essay competition for students of Baptist High School, Obanikoro, Lagos.

The essay competition aimed at promoting English language and reading culture among secondary school students. The Chief Executive Officer and Founding Director of the centre, Dr. Agatha Afolabi, said the essay competition was sponsored by the family of renowned English scholar and the author of the Brighter Grammar series, the late Phebean Ogundipe, which was the second in the series of annual essay competitions in public secondary schools in Lagos.

She said a panel of experts from the ophthalmic group practice and other relevant organisations were the contest judges. She said: “The Ogundipe family also donated books and educational equipment to the junior and senior categories of the school to facilitate the teaching and learning of English Language in schools.” Read more 

Flood: Lagos orders residents of Alagbole, Meiran, Kara, others to relocate (Tribune)

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday alerted residents downstream of the Ogun River of the likelihood of experiencing flood this month and relocating to safe areas.

In a statement, spokesman for the Ministry of Environment, Kunle Adeshina, identified the affected areas as Alagbole, Meiran, Maidan, Kara, Isheri-Olowora, Agiliti, Owode-Onirin, Owode-Elede, Agboyi I, Agboyi II, Ajegunle, Itowolo, Majidun, Ibeshe, Baiyeku, Maidan, Lekki-Ajah and the Lagos Lagoon boundaries.

“The latest alert which emanated from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is a follow-up to a public statement issued by the Ogun Osun River Basin Authority on Monday showing rainfall and average water released monthly for the Years 2021, 2022 and 2023 till mid-October and warning of possible inundation by flooding which is already happening,” the statement read. Bayelsa suspends monarch (Punch)

The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has approved the immediate suspension of a first-class traditional ruler, King Boutua Aranka, the Ibedaowei of the Opokuma clan.

The monarch’s suspension was announced in a statement signed by the deputy governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, on Wednesday.

“His suspension was due to a reported case of falsehood and a misrepresentation of the chieftaincy laws of the state,” the statement said. Read more

Oprah Winfrey didn’t take her The Color Purple role for the money. In an interview with Essence Magazine, the 69-year-old mogul reveals that she was paid only $35,000 for her Oscar-nominated role of Sofia in the 1985 film.

“I can’t even begin to tell you what it means to me — a person who wanted nothing more in my life than to be in The Color Purple,” Winfrey tells Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R., and Fantasia Barrino, the cast of the upcoming film adaptation. “And God taught me to surrender — that was the big lesson for me. Oscar-nominated actor Burt Young, of Rocky fame, dies at 83 (ABC)

Burt Young, the Academy Award-nominated actor known for his timeless role as Paulie in the Rocky film franchise, has died at 83, his manager confirmed to ABC News.

“Burt was an actor of tremendous emotional range. He could make you cry and he could scare you to death. But the real pathos that I experienced was the poignancy of his soul. That’s where it came from,” his manager, Lynda Bensky, said of the veteran actor in a statement.

The Chosen convention brings thousands to Dallas, announces theater rollout for Season 4 (RNS)

Over 3,500 fans attended The Chosen Insiders Conference in Dallas over the weekend to celebrate The Chosen, the popular film series about the life of Jesus and his followers in first-century Israel under Roman oppression.

“ChosenCon,” a two-day conference, gathered fans from around the world, some as far as Australia and South Korea, to meet with the cast and crew, including actor Jonathan Roumie, who stars as Jesus.

“It was overwhelming and beautiful to see over three thousand people in one room cheering and laughing and celebrating our show. But even better were the countless stories of impact viewers were able to tell us personally,” Dallas Jenkins, the show’s creator, told Religion News Service in a statement after the conference. Ukraine says deadly Russian missile attack hits Zaporizhzhia (VOA) 

Ukrainian officials said Wednesday a Russian missile attack in the city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least two people and wounded five others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the missile hit a five-story residential building and destroyed eight apartments.

Gaza war: Egypt announces “sustainable” aid corridor to Gaza via Rafah (NewArab)

Egypt agreed to reopen its border crossing with the Gaza Strip to allow aid to reach Palestinians, the US said, as the humanitarian crisis worsened in the narrow enclave and anti-Israel protests flared across the Middle East.

The region remained volatile in the aftermath of an explosion at Gaza’s Al-Ahli al-Arabi hospital late on Tuesday, which Palestinian officials said was an Israeli strike that killed at least 471 people.

Israel and the U.S. said the cause was a failed rocket launch by anti-Israeli Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants in Gaza, which denied responsibility. Read more

AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze has picked up a left hamstring injury while on Nigeria duty, the club said on Wednesday and could miss a month of action.

“Samuel Chukwueze is already back at Milanello: the Nigerian suffered a left hamstring injury while away on international duty,” said the Serie A leaders in a statement on the club’s website.

Stakeholders fault Oki over Lagos FA crisis (Punch)

Football stakeholders in Lagos have faulted the Lagos State Football Association chairman, Fuad Oki, for violating the body’s rules and regulations and that of the Nigeria Football Federation, The PUNCH reports.

The LSFA on Tuesday suspended Oki for gross misconduct by a simple majority of five to four after a quorum was formed in a meeting held at its office on Ogunlana Drive, Surulere, Lagos.

Video footage showed Oki hitting at a camera meant to cover the meeting, after he allegedly punched his vice chairman Liameed Gafar. Read more

Mohamed Salah has appealed for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza after making a donation to help those affected by Israeli air strikes.

The Egypt and Liverpool striker, one of the highest-profile Muslim footballers in the world, made the donation to the Egyptian Red Crescent on Sunday. The amount was undisclosed but is said to be significant.

Salah had faced criticism in Egypt for not using his profile to comment on the Israel-Hamas war but, in a social media post on Wednesday, he called for world leaders to “prevent further slaughter of all innocent souls” and for immediate help for the people of Gaza. Read more

F1 drivers take on golfers for Netflix Cup, the streaming service’s 1st ever sport event (Standard)

Netflix is to broadcast its first live sport event, in which Formula One drivers take on each other and pro golfers round eight holes in Las Vegas. 

Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz will all swap their F1 machinery for golf clubs as they take part in the Netflix Cup competition. The event will tie in with the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix over November 16-18. 

They will tee off alongside Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas. One pro golfer will partner with one driver and they will score as a pair. Read more
