Two female students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Joseph Joy Adanma and Vandora Oreoluwa Favour, have disclosed how they killed a nightclub owner, Adeniyi Ojo, in a hotel.

Speaking when the police paraded them at Force Headquarters in Abuja, on Wednesday, Adanma revealed that they deceived the man to allow them tie him ahead of the romp and he consented.

She said they had the plan to steal from him since he had refused to render help each time they needed assistance. Read more 

How 6-year-old was buried alive for stealing N1k in Kogi (Leadership)

A six-year-old boy, Friday Oshodi, was buried alive for allegedly stealing N1,000 in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, on Tuesday.

The incident was said to have occurred in Apamsede community, near the 12 Brigade Headquarters of the Nigeria Army in Lokoja. The minor was buried alive by his older brother, Goodness Oshodi, around the bushy area close to the community.

An eyewitness told LEADERSHIP that the mother of the boys ordered the older one to punish the younger son after realising that her money was missing from where she kept it. Read more 

Lagos teacher wins African Union continental prize (Guardian)

A Teacher in Lagos State, Adeola Adefemi, has won this year’s African Union(AU) Continental Teacher Prize.

The announcement was made by the Director of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in charge of International Institute of Capacity Building in Africa, Wodon Quentin, in celebration of this year’s teachers’ day.

This came barely two weeks after two Lagos teachers were shortlisted among top 50 finalists for the Global Teacher Prize. Read more

Meet new EFCC chairman, Ola Olukoyede (Punch)

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday approved the appointment of Mr. Ola Olukoyede to serve as the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for a renewable term of four years in the first instance, pending Senate confirmation.

This comes nearly four months after Tinubu suspended the former chairman of the anti-graft agency chief, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the November 11 governorship election, Timipre Sylva, has faulted his disqualification by an Abuja High Court, saying the judgment cannot stand because it is against natural justice.

He said the court matter was an indication that some persons are afraid of his rising profile and candidature ahead of the governorship polls.

Navy destroys illegal refinery in Rivers (Channels)

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder have destroyed an illegal refining site in the creeks of Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Conducting journalists around the site on Wednesday, the Commander of the NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Desmond Igbo, estimated the capacity of the refinery at over a million litres.

The Commander explained the extent of the operation which he said steals crude from the wellhead to the illegal reservoir. Read more

Wife of Gabon’s deposed president Ali Bongo jailed (France24)

Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, suspected of allegedly embezzling public funds, was jailed late on Wednesday, her lawyer Francois Zimeray told AFP, condemning the “arbitrary… illegal procedure”.

Bongo’s wife was charged on September 28 with money laundering, forgery and falsification of records.

Sylvia Bongo has been under house arrest in the capital, Libreville, since the August 30 coup brought the curtain down on 55 years of Bongo dynasty rule. Read more

Election results trickle in as voting in Liberia continues on day 2 (VOA)

Liberia’s National Elections Commission, NEC, on Wednesday announced the first batch of provisional results from Tuesday’s presidential and legislative poll. While the figures represent only a fraction of the total votes cast, the commission says some people are yet to vote.

The chairperson of the elections commission, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, said bad roads, flooding, and rains damaged some electoral materials and blocked access to some voting districts.

“The damaged materials will be replaced for the conduct of the elections in the affected areas within a week’s time,” said Browne-Lansanah. “The NEC will dispatch a team to assist the magisterial team in the county as soon as possible. Additionally, due to inaccessibility and lack of mobile network coverage, there has so far been no information from five precincts.” Read more 

Sir Elton John’s cash injection boosts music royalties start-up Audoo (BelfastTelegraph)

Sir Elton John has become the latest major musician to pump cash into a British music technology firm which helps artists receive fairer royalty payments.

The veteran singer-songwriter, who headlined this year’s Glastonbury Festival, and husband David Furnish have backed Audoo as part of a 5 million US dollar (£4.1 million) funding round.

Luke Lloyd-Davies, of Rocket Entertainment Group, also helped support the investment, which has taken overall funding raised by Audoo to 22 million dollars (£17.9 million). Read more

Tuesday night (October 10), BET aired their annual Hip-Hop Awards, which originally took place on October 3 in Atlanta. Coming off the summer 2022 release of his most recent album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar took home several trophies at the ceremony, as he surpassed a few records for the BET Hip-Hop Awards in the process.

Winning in each category he was nominated for, Lamar took home the awards for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, and Video Director of the Year. For the Hip-Hop Artist of the Year category, he beat out competitors like 21 Savage, Burna Boy, Cardi B, Drake, GloRilla, J. Cole, and Lil Uzi Vert. To honour the tenth anniversary of their monumental fourth and final studio record, ‘‘Random Access Memories’’, Daft Punk are releasing a series of ‘Memory Tapes’ featuring their collaborators on YouTube. The latest entry comes from Pharrell Williams.

Williams co-wrote and featured on ‘‘Get Lucky’’, the album’s hit lead single, as well as the follow-up single ‘‘Lose Yourself to Dance’’.

Reminiscing on his time collaborating with Daft Punk, Williams began, “When monumental things happen, sometimes it’s lost on me because I’m just so in it and being so present in the moment. German club Borussia Dortmund turned down a golden opportunity to sign prolific forward Victor Boniface in the summer, PUNCH Sports Extra has learnt.

According to Fussballtransfers, the Black and Yellows were offered the Nigerian forward but rejected the chance to sign the 22-year-old from Union Saint Gilliose following Sebastien Haller’s new found form after his cancer surgery.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has been scheduled to fight Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on October 21, 2023.

Usman will do battle with the explosive Swedish fighter in a much-anticipated fight in the middleweight division at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island.

Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu has released a video confirming that he is alive and well despite the conflict between Israel and Palestine, which has caused the death of over 2,000 people.

There are some Nigerian players in Israel like Super Eagles midfielder Ogu, who currently plies his trade in Maccabi Jaffa and Adebayo Adeleye, who was named in the 25-man squad for Nigeria’s friendly games against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique.

USADA reveals imminent split from UFC amid McGregor testing saga (ESPN)

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced Wednesday that UFC fighter Conor McGregor has officially returned to the drug-testing pool, the next step ahead of a potential return fight. But CEO Travis Tygart’s statement in an accompanying news release came with a caveat: USADA’s partnership with the UFC will be over beginning Jan. 1, 2024.

Tygart wrote that the UFC and USADA had a “positive and productive meeting” about a contract renewal in May. But “the UFC did an about-face” and told USADA on Monday that the promotion would be going in a different direction, Tygart wrote. The UFC hired USADA to run its anti-doping program in 2015.

According to the USADA release, the relationship between the two parties was rendered “untenable” due to the situation with McGregor, the UFC’s top star. Read more
