Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of the Lagos State Police Command have smashed a syndicate that specialized in advertising telephones on an online marketplace- Jiji.com, only to exchange it with a fake one, while delivering them to customers in Lagos.

Arrested were two suspected members of the syndicate: Chukwu – Emeka Ogbona (45) and Olabode Kehinde (34), both mobile phone technicians at the Computer Village, Ikeja.

The suspects and other fleeing members of the gang as gathered, lure unsuspecting customers to Olowu Street and Computer Village, Ikeja, where they fraudulently collected money from the buyers after showing them the real phones. Read more

Flood sweeps away two children in Lagos (Punch)

Flood from torrential rainfall has swept away two yet-to-be-identified children at Oyebanjo street, Ketu area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Emergency in a situation report on Sunday said a search operation is ongoing to find the missing children.

LASEMA’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, noted that it was discovered that the children were missing around 08 pm on Saturday.

Lagos students to return to school in phases from September 21 (Guardian)

The commissioner for education, Lagos State Mrs Folasade Adefisayo has announced the plans for both public and private schools resumption in the State months the schools were shut down due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Ministry is adopting a phased approach to opening public schools,” Adefisayo said. “This phased approach to opening will enable public schools meet COVID-19 social distance rules and safety protocols aside helping it watch the behaviour of the pandemic as schools gradually open.

She said the present Junior Secondary 3 and Senior Secondary 2 students in public schools in the state are to resume classes from Monday, 21st of September, 2020. Read more

FRSC, groups train mechanics, others in first aid (Punch)

Two non-government associations, Trauma Care International Foundation and Health Emergency Initiative, are partnering the Federal Road Safety Corps to train road crash first aid responders in Lagos.

The groups, in collaboration with the FRSC, organised the training on Saturday at the corps headquarters in the Ojodu area of the city for mechanics, tyre repairers, transport workers and fuel station attendants, who were equipped with first aid boxes.

The training was organised in commemoration of World First Aid Day with the theme, ‘First Aid Saves Lives.’ Read more

The Nigerian Government Sunday said former President Olusegun Obasanjo is a “lowly…Divider-in-Chief” after he criticised President Muhammadu Buhari of running the country aground.

“From the lofty heights of Commander-in-Chief, General Obasanjo has descended to the lowly level of Divider-in-Chief,” Buhari’s spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement.

Obasanjo and Buhari were former allies in the run up to the 2015 general elections when Buhari was the candidate of the then opposition party All Progressives Congress. Read more

Lagos police deploys 1,000 officers for Edo governorship election (Guardian)

The Lagos State Police Command has deployed 1,000 officers to complement other security personnel drafted for the Edo governorship election scheduled for Sept. 19.

This is contained in a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Adejobi said that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu admonished officers from the Command to be of good conduct and exhibit professionalism in discharging their duties during the election.

“He further reiterated the commitment of the IGP to sustain the core values of democracy in Nigeria via fair, free and credible elections,” the police spokesman said. Read more

Oyo issues seven-day ultimatum to roadside traders (Punch)

The Oyo State Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to street traders across the state to vacate the roadsides or face the weight of the law.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Idowu Oyeleke, made this known while featuring Saturday on a programme tagged ‘Bottomline’ on IBR 92.5FM.

Gunmen abduct businesswoman in Delta community (Punch)

Gunmen on Saturday abducted a businesswoman identified as Mrs Akpezi Okpidi in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Sources said the incident happened around 8am, while the 33-year-old woman was heading for her shop at Otovwodo, a busy part of the town.

Killer whales have been ramming into and damaging sailing boats off the Spanish and Portuguese coasts, leaving marine experts perplexed about the suddenly aggressive encounters.

Orcas are highly-intelligent and known to follow boats closely, but it’s unusual for them to repeatedly attack the vessels, the Guardian reported.

Over the last two months, the orca encounters have damaged several boats and left at least one sailor bruised on impact. Read more

Los Angeles police officers shot in ‘ambush’ (BBC)

Two Los Angeles police officers are in a critical condition after being shot in what police are calling an ambush.

Video of the incident shows a figure approach the officers’ vehicle, before opening fire and running away.

Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva called the act “cowardly”. The suspect remains at large.

A viral video shows a golf cart zooming down a highway — after the passengers apparently missed their Lyft ride, footage shows.

The video shared Saturday to Twitter showed a group of five women barreling down the roadway on the woefully ill-equipped vehicle.

“Hey, that’s just way too dangerous! That’s all we saying. That’s dangerous!” a motorist, who was behind the camera, could be heard saying.

Two of the women threw up their hands at him as if to say “stop,” but he continued to argue with them. Read more

An Israeli cabinet minister has resigned in protest against plans to impose a second national lockdown.

Housing Minister Yaakov Litzman said the restrictions would prevent Jewish people from celebrating religious festivals later this month.

The lockdown is due to come into force on Friday, the Jewish new year, and affect Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, on 27 September.

Lewis Hamilton took his 90th career victory by beating Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas in a chaotic, incident-strewn Tuscan Grand Prix.

Bernal cracked badly on the final climb to Grand Colombier and lost over seven minutes to slip from third to 13th overall.
