The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a housewife identified as Barkisu Sulaiman in the Karaworo area of Lokoja, Kogi State.

The woman, who was allegedly impregnated by one of the servants of her husband, reportedly has six children.

The woman had thrown the newborn baby she had for her husband’s servant into a gutter. Read more

The Nigerian Army has launched investigation into alleged diversion of palliatives meant for soldiers by a Brigade Commander in Kano State.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, stated this on Wednesday while reacting to media reports of the detention erstwhile 3 Brigade Commander in Kano, Brig-Gen M.A Sadiq, over alleged diversion of rice and illegal sale of government properties.

He confirmed that the immediate-past Commander, 3 Brigade Kano, Brigadier General MA Sadiq, is currently undergoing military investigation over administrative discrepancies while he was Commander of 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army. Read more

Mother arrested for dumping newborn in drainage (Punch)

A housewife, Barkisu Sulaiman, has been arrested by residents of Karaworo-Lokoja for allegedly throwing her newborn baby into a drainage.

She was apprehended on Tuesday following a tip-off from a woman in the Kabawa area of Lokoja, who is said to be a close confidante of the suspect, City & Crime reports.

“Touched by the condition of the abandoned baby, her friend rushed to an elderly man in Karaworo-Lokoja and confessed to him the crime committed by her friend (Barkisu). Read more

Police debunk suicide bombing in Delta (Nation)

The Delta State Police Command has debunked reports of a suicide bombing in the timber town of Sapele area of Delta state.

In a telephone conversation with The Nation on Wednesday afternoon, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said reports of the bomb explosion in the area were mere exaggeration of a mild incident.

Reports of an alleged suicide bombing along Mission Road in Sapele on Tuesday evening had caused panic among residents of the area and neighbouring towns. Read more 

Rivers: New CP visits, inspects LG secretariats amidst tight security (Channels)

The new Commissioner of Police in Rivers state, Mustapha Bala on Wednesday embarked on inspection visits to some local government council secretariats which were affected by Monday’s violence in the state.

The inspection took place after a meeting with Chijioke Ihunwo at the Obio/Akpor council, Rumuodumaya.

He also visited Emohua to see the destruction for himself, after which he visited Isiokpo in Ikwerre LGA, as well as Eleme local government.

Aiyedatiwa dismisses aide over alleged N30m bribe (Tribune)

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has sacked his Special Assistant on Forestry (Central Senatorial District), Adeboye Taofiq Ewenla, over a N30m bribery allegation levelled against him.

Ewenla dismissal was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, who said the governor has also ordered a probe into the allegations against the former Special Assistant.

It was gathered that Ewenla had in a leaked audio demanded the sum of N30 million from timber traders operating in the state, threatening to expel them from the forest if they fail to pay the amount. Read more

Jailed leader of a prominent election watchdog is on trial in Russia (ABC)

A jailed leader of a prominent independent election monitoring group in Russia appeared in court on Wednesday as his trial continued on charges of organizing the work of an “undesirable” organization.

Grigory Melkonyants, co-chair of Russia’s leading election watchdog Golos, faces up to six years in prison if convicted. He has rejected the charges as politically motivated. The case against him is part of the monthslong crackdown on Kremlin critics and rights activists that the government ratcheted up after sending troops into Ukraine in 2022.

Golos has monitored for and exposed violations in every major election in Russia since it was founded in 2000. Over the years, it has faced mounting pressure from the authorities. In 2013, the group was designated as a “foreign agent” — a label that implies additional government scrutiny and carries strong pejorative connotations. Three years later, it was liquidated as a non-governmental organization by Russia’s Justice Ministry. Read more

Supreme Court hears Oklahoma death penalty case in which state and inmate agree conviction should be tossed (NBC)

The Supreme Court on Wednesday will weigh whether inmate Richard Glossip’s murder conviction should be thrown out — an unusual death penalty case in which the attorney general of Oklahoma has sided with a defendant.

Glossip, who is now 61, was convicted of arranging for the murder in 1997 of his boss at the Oklahoma City motel where they worked.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, a Republican, made the rare decision to back Glossip’s appeal following an investigation into the case. The state has stopped short of agreeing with Glossip’s claim that he is innocent. Read more

Wimbledon: All England club to replace all 300 line judges after 147 years with electronic system next year (SkySports)

Wimbledon will replace all 300 line judges with artificial intelligence and an electronic system from next year, removing human officials for the first time in the championship’s 147-year history.

The All England Club has confirmed all 18 match courts will be installed with automated electronic line calling (ELC).

The system will be the same as the one used at the US Open since 2020, where automated voice calls are played out within a tenth of a second of the ball landing. Read more

Tennis player Paula Badosa has apologised after posting a photo appearing to mimic a Chinese face while having dinner in Beijing.
