89 men beaten, violated by their wives in Lagos – Commissioner (DailyTimes)

Between 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, 89 men confirmed being battered by their wives in cases of domestic abuse, according to the Lagos State Government.

Cecilia Bolaji Dada, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), announced this on Tuesday at a ministerial news conference in Ikeja, Lagos, to commemorate Governor Babajide Sanwo-second Olu’s year in office.

According to the commissioner, 46 men confirmed their wives had violated them to the ministry in 2020. She went on to say that 43 men reported being battered by their wives in the first quarter of 2021, bringing the number to 89 in less than two years.

She explained that the number only included cases that were reported to WAPA, and that some cases were reported directly to the Ministry of Justice and police station, which the ministry might not be aware of. Read more

Blasphemy: Police order arrest of 13 in Lagos (DailyTrust)

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, on Tuesday ordered the arrest of 13 leaders of warring groups in Gengere Community, Mile 12 Area of Ketu for their alleged involvement in the crisis rocking the business community.

The leaders were said to have set some youths against themselves over an alleged statement credited to one Alhaji Alidu Mohammed, which they claimed disrespected and blasphemed Prophet Mohammed.

Following the directives of the 13 leaders, some hoodlums in the community on April 30, 2021, at about 3.30 pm went on the rampage in the area. Read more

One dies as building collapses in Lagos police barracks (Punch)

A bungalow in the Mounted Troop Police Barracks in Ikeja, Lagos State, on Tuesday, partially collapsed and killed one Peace Bulus and broke the arm of her sister.

The victims’ mother, Hauwa, who escaped death by a whisker alongside the injured victim and her two other daughters, was said to have collapsed due to shock.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Hauwa and her four children were sleeping in their one-room apartment in the barracks when an implosion occurred in the building around 3am.

It was learnt that the lintel of the door suddenly fell, smashed Peace’s skull and broke her sister’s arm. Read more

Man petitions Sanwo-Olu over threats by land grabbers (Guardian)

A Sea Captain, Emmanuel Attah, has petitioned Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alleging that his life is being threatened by one Mr. Joseph Emeresu Ayede, alias Sato. He also accused Ayede of trying to grab his plots of land.

Attah alleged that Ayede threatened to shoot him over a three-acre land he bought on June 13, 2009, and another 12 x 150 plot situated at Okokomaiko, which he bought twice from the Obanla Family of Isashi, Ojo Local Government Area, Lagos.

The petitioner alleged that he has been compelled to vacate a house he built on the land to secure his life. Attah, a sailor, said his ordeal started when he came back from the seas and met a fish pond on his land, adding that he reported the issue to one of the signatories on his land receipt, Alhaji Sikiru Salau, who told him that the land was only leased to Ayede for N7, 000. Baba Ijesha risks life sentence as Lagos prepares charges against him (DailyTrust)

The Lagos State Ministry of Justice has counselled the Police to charge Olanrewaju James, Nollywood actor, also known as Baba Ijesha, to court over allegations of sex abuse.

In a statement on Tuesday, Moyosore Onigbanjo, Commissioner for Justice, said the Directorate of Public Prosecutions has recommended five charges against the actor.

“It would be recalled that the Nigeria Police Force arrested Mr. Olanrewaju James (also referred to as Baba Ijesha) on account of various sexual abuse allegations. On the 30th of April, 2021, the Police forwarded the case file of COP v Olanrewaju James to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advise.” Read more

Drama at Police SFU unit as DPR Director vows to expose accomplices in N3b contract scam (Vanguard)

Police detectives attached to the Special Fraud Unit SFU Lekki Lagos weekend, grilled a female Deputy Director, department of Contract and procurement (names withheld) of Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, for allegedly awarding a contract worth N300,000.000.00 (Three hundred million naira only) to a Nigeria company, Shoama Nigeria Ltd without due process.

Sources said the Deputy Director was being investigated following a revelation that the Nigeria company allegedly forged a certificate of the Nigeria Pension Commission which was one of the criteria to secure the contract.

Police sources intimated that the female Deputy Director who was spotted at the Lekki unit of the police at 11.45 am went through a grueling interrogation session which lasted several hours during which she admitted signing the contract papers without due diligence but vowed to implicate her counterparts of the accounts and administration directors who she alleged were part and parcel of the irregularities. 11 suspected cultists, traffic robbers nabbed in Lagos (Punch)

 Men of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested 11 suspected cultists and traffic robbers for terrorising and dispossessing members of the public of their valuables in the Ikeja area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Monday that the suspects were arrested following a distress call from a victim, adding that the suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation.

He said, “The command has been arresting traffic robbers, who terrorise and dispossess innocent people of their belongings in the state, while many of them are being kept at bay due to the consistency and commitment of the command to tackling the menace and other forms of criminality in the state.

“In furtherance of the command’s anti-crime measures, the police operatives attached to the Strike Team of the command, on May 1, 2021, around 2pm, arrested 11 suspected cultists and traffic robbers, who were attacking and dispossessing innocent people of their belongings at the Railway Crossing, Ikeja Along, Lagos. Sexual assault: Over 7,500 sign petition, kick against Baba Ijesha’s release (Punch)

Over 7,500 persons have signed a petition to prevent the release of popular Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, better known as Baba Ijesha, for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the care of popular comedienne, Adekola Adekanya, otherwise called Princess.

The actor was also said to have first defiled the minor when she was seven and repeated same recently when she was 14-year-old.

The petition, which was started by the Aunt Landa’s Bethel Foundation, on behalf of the teenager’s foster mother, Princess, was titled, ‘Olanrewaju James Omiyinka must not be released in Nigeria for defiling a 7 years old girl’.

When visited on Monday morning, the petition portal domiciled on www.change.org had attracted over 7,600 signatories. Read more

Lagos CP reads riot act to criminals (Leadership)

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosun, has read riot acts to criminal elements in the state, saying there is no more hiding place for criminals in the state.

Woman arrested for using children as beggars in Lagos (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a woman popularly known as Mama Ajayi, for allegedly using children to beg for alms in the Chisco area of Lekki, Lagos.

This is just as a hotel attendant was arrested, following a complaint by a guest that he sneaked into her hotel room at night to assault her sexually.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu, who paraded some suspects arrested within the month of April, at the command headquarters, Ikeja, disclosed that Mama Ajayi was arrested alongside one Segun Ajayi.

2 businessmen in court for alleged N16.5m fraud (Guardian)

Two businessmen, John Olufemi and Abraham Omotosho, on Friday, appeared in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding a man of 10.000 pounds (N16.5million).

The defendants, who both reside at Yaba area of Lagos, are charged with three counts of conspiracy, theft and obtaining by false pretences.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, ASP Rita Momah, told the court that the defendants committed the offence in 2013, in Lagos. Read more 

EFCC Arrests Lagos banker for alleged ₦34m fraud (Channels)  

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a Lagos banker, Elizabeth Modupe Osunjuyigbe for an alleged fraudulent diversion of funds to the tune of over ₦34m

In a statement issued on Friday by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, the Lagos zonal office of the anti-graft agency quizzed the suspect said to be an employee of Access Bank Plc.

“The suspect, who was arrested on Friday April 29, 2021, allegedly sent a fraudulent request sometime in January to the Branch Service Manager of Access Bank, Adeola Odeku, Lagos State, to issue a draft of the sum of ₦31,330,165 in favour of one Best Timland Nigeria Limited,” the statement read. Man arrested with 97 wraps of cocaine at Lagos Airport (Independent)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a suspected drug trafficker, Chigbogu Obiora, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos with 97 wraps of cocaine.

NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Babafemi said that the 47-year-old drug trafficker was arrested by operatives of NDLEA on Sunday, April, 25 during the inward clearance of Ethiopian Airline.

He said that Obiora, who arrived in Lagos on board the airline from Entebbe, Uganda via Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, was subsequently put under observation. Read more 

Sexual assault: Lagos lists possible charges against Baba Ijesha (Punch)

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team has waded into the sexual assault allegation against Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju James, also known as Baba Ijesha.

Baba Ijesha who is currently in police custody is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

Painter impersonates Oba Elegushi, defrauds Facebook lover of N51m (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command, on Thursday, paraded a painter, Moses Olaitan, and his accomplice, Segun Omoshola, for allegedly impersonating the Elegushi of Ikate land, Oba Saheed Elegushi, and using his image to defraud a woman they met on Facebook of N51m.

The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, while parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Ikeja, said after a report was made, detectives tracked down and arrested Olaitan and Segun three months after perpetrating the crime.

Olaitan said after he opened a Facebook account in the name of the monarch, he started posting different pictures of the traditional ruler to attract potential suitors. Read more

Police deny plan to release Baba Ijesha (Guardian)

The Lagos State police boss, Hakeem Odumosu, yesterday, said the police were yet to release a Nollywood actor, James Olanrewaju, known as Baba Ijesha, who is in their custody for allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl.

Odumosu said this yesterday at the command headquarters, Ikeja, when he paraded suspected criminals.

According to him, the suspect is still in police custody pending advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) on the matter before further decisions would be taken. Read more

Pregnant Lagos businesswoman’s corpse found in bathroom (Punch)

The husband, children and neighbours of a pregnant woman, Ramota Raheem, have been left in shock after discovering her remains in the bathroom of her apartment in the Agboju-Satellite Town area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Ramota’s children left her at home to a destination in the area, but on returning in the evening, they met the door of their apartment bolted from the back.

Efforts by the children and neighbours to get Ramota to open the door proved abortive as several shouts of her name were unanswered. Read more

Man arrested for defrauding Bureau De Change operator of $10k (Punch)

One Lukman Adeshina has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly defrauding a Bureau De Change operator of $10,000.

It was gathered that Adeshina was arrested on April 14, 2021, in the Ipaja-Ayobo area of Lagos State after one Isa Mohammed approached the anti-graft agency to make a complaint against him.

Mohammed, according to a statement by the Head of Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, alleged that a BDC operator, Bashir Isa, sometime in March 2020 approached him with an offer to sell $10,000, while he would pay the naira equivalent of the dollars to him. Read more
