I met my wife, Kike through a mutual friend, Charity. We are old school mates and remained friends for more than 40 years.
At that time, Kike had been abandoned by her husband for three years. He left for the US; leaving her with three children to care for on her own. The man had gone married an oyibo woman; cut Kike and the kids off. no phone calls, no emails…nothing. Even his family here told her there was nothing they could do about this abandonment.
At the time I met Kike, I also had been separated from my wife and our son. I wasn’t even looking to being in a relationship with anyone. Our separation at that time was almost a year…still, relationship wise, I wasn’t just in the mood for it.
Exactly one year after my separation from my wife, I began to date again…
But I dated younger women.
I figured, why not? There’s no wife to badger me, in fact my people encouraged me!
You see, I was free to mingle. These girls weren’t interested in anything but their wigs, long fingernails, skin and iPhone. I was the sugar daddy who could provide all if they let me into their skirts.
I confess. Like I said, I wasn’t willing to be tied down. Not so soon, again, anyway. I chased the small girls…and they didn’t stay with me for long…there was always another younger one calling and sending me her nudes…women and wahala.
Then I got a wakeup call one day when I heard the girl I took home one time telling her friend on the phone, while in the bathroom, that she was in “Lagos, managing an old man.”
I was just 52 then!
Dia fada!
Me, “Old man!” Oya, carry your kaya and vamoose from my house!
I didn’t quarrel with her o, she just told the truth I had refused to face. Anyway, I decided then, that I was going to find someone to spend the rest of my “old man” years with. Not with these small girls, who would want to have babies of their own and maybe even a career. I didn’t want babies and I wanted someone done with children who would enjoy the rest of old life with me…not someone who would be going all over the place to climb the career ladder…I want someone who had done that and was quite content with what she had while looking forward to retirement or a quiet life.
So I began to pay attention to what my friend had long been telling me, Kike. I asked Charity to invite me to any event where I could meet with Kike again…you see because Charity never let me have rest all the years I was chasing these small girls, she always reminded me I was wasting my time. Anyway, long story short I liked Kike, I even liked her kids, too. They were already teenagers in boarding school. We got along, though her first son, who was 17 years old at that time, despised me. We are now friends, though, ko ni choice…he can’t marry his mother and his father was gone with the wind.
Anyway, Kike and I performed the traditional wedding after being together for to years and life continued. I took charge of the children’s fees…introduced them to my son and one some holidays we lived…well, we lived as comfortably as we could.
Then, last year, her deadbeat husband came to Nigeria from Yankee.
He’d come to beg her forgiveness, he’d come to claim his children…after 7 years! He’d come to take Kike back!
Fafafaoul! How?
Yes, he could have his children, I will not contest that but he should leave my wife alone!
He went to her office to plead with her to leave me, claiming he what he did back then was for his family. He was now settled, maybe divorced from his oyibo wife. I don’t even want to know and now wants my own wife back…not gonna happen!
But first, I asked Kike, “Babe, do you still love him? Do you want to take him back?” Because you see, omo, I could be fighting a war I would lose. Thankfully my wife said she didn’t want him anymore but that she owed him the right to talk about their children…I said fine. Talk about your children but don’t meet him in a private place…she did!
I don’t want to know what happned.
I just know that afterwards, all I hear my wife tell me is…”he did it for us.he is now ready to take responsibility for his kids
He really suffered abroad…
Omo, I told her, stay away from this guy…but if their kids is what she claims they talk about…what am I to do?
Then one day, I heard her talking kelekele on the phone to him. I yanked the phone from her and told him my mind.
Ogbeni, you can’t be doing this. You left this woman for more than 7 years, I have paid your children’s schools fees for more than 5 years, I have been the one who showed up at their school, at the places where fathers show up…you were never there. You had phones to call them, the internet is there, you never reached out to them and now your life had gone south, you suddenly remember you have a wife and kids.
Take your kids, leave my wife!
If he said anything, I didn’t hear it.
I told my wife, “Going forward, you will not talk to him or go to meet him, unless I am there, unless of course you want to follow him back to yankee…if you were that important to him, he had more than 7 years to make it right with you and his kids, he didn’t. This is a farm I have begun to plough in, I will not let another farmer come and steal my yams!”
O’tan!
If I catch them together, one person will greet God that day!
