 A 28-year-old man that the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command said was arrested for allegedly raping and impregnating two teenage sisters has said he did the act with the permission of the girls’ father.

Sources at the Ikotun police division, which is handling the matter, alleged that the suspect, one Nduka Anyanwu, had been having carnal knowledge of the girls, 13 and 17 years old, since they were in primary school. Interrogators at the station told our correspondent that, Anyanwu, however, said he engaged the sisters in sex with the permission of their father, Christian Onyechi.

The suspect was said to have been arrested yesterday after a pregnancy test that the girls’ mother insisted must be done on them showed they were pregnant. Read more

Infidelity: Police detain woman for killing live-in lover (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has started investigation into the death of a 25-year-old man, Auwal Sulaiman, who was allegedly stabbed to death by his live-in lover, Precious Okogbua, at their residence in the Liverpool area of Apapa, Lagos State.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the suspect had been arrested and the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for investigation

He said, “On August 1, 2020, one Musa Abubakar, Manager, Island Village, off Liverpool, Apapa, came to the station and reported that on the same day, he received a phone call that one Precious Okogbua, stabbed her lover, Awal Sulaiman, in the neck with a knife. Read more

Jeep lands businessmen in court (DailyTrust)

The Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector-General of Police has filed charges against two businessmen and their companies before a Federal High Court over allegations of fraud and forgery to the tune of N15 million.

The men, Oyewole Kole-Jones and Usman Onoja, will be arraigned in court on October 6, 2020 alongside their firms, Mackjob Real Estate Limited and Lovonous Microfinance Bank. IRT prosecutor, Mr Nosa Watson Uhumwnagho, alleged that the defendants conspired to commit the offences on December 19, 2018, at 6, Soji Adepegba Close, Off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos. Read more

Lagos artistes accuse police of extortion, sexual harassment (Punch)

Two Lagos-based artistes, David Marvellous and Damilola Oladimeji, have accused some personnel of the Lagos State Police Command of alleged extortion and sexual harassment.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the artistes were returning home on July 28, 2020, after buying food when policemen from the Langbasa Police Station allegedly accosted them on their estate at Badore, in the Ajah area of the state.

The duo told our correspondent that after their arrest, the policemen went round the estate, apprehending innocent residents while threatening to shoot anyone who resisted them.

Marvellous, who alleged that one of the policemen sexually harassed him, stated that the cop also slapped him on the face when he (Marvellous) queried his action. Read more

RCCG donates 20,000 face masks to Lagos (Guardian)

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has donated additional 20,000 medical face masks to the Lagos State government as part of its contribution to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The donation was made during the commissioning of O Care Face Mask factory, the first registered medical face mask facility in the country.

Speaking at the occasion, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade, Special Assistant to the General Overseer, Christian Social Responsibility, said the mission would continue to support the government’s efforts in the fight against COVID-19. Read more

Kalu, Ibori, Uduaghan disagree with Akpabio over alleged NDDC contracts (Punch)

The Chief Whip of the Senate, who is also a former governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, on Monday, said the Niger Delta Development Commission has not paid the contractors, who constructed the roads he facilitated.

This is as two former governors of Delta State; James Ibori and Emmanuel Uduaghan, denied approaching the NDDC for contracts.

Ogun Gov, Abiodun steps down mandatory ‘N25,000 COVID-19 test’ for students (DailyTrust)

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Monday, stepped down the mandatory COVID-19 test for the boarding students in the state’s secondary schools who are billed to resume on Tuesday.

Abiodun also declared that the test is now free for all students, thereby withdrawing the government’s position which earlier charged boarding students in private secondary schools N25,000 for the COVID-19 test.

The government had mandated each student to undergo a test as a precondition for resumption into the school. Read more

Abdulwahab Bello, a-30-year-old man, has alleged that a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Twon Township Police Station, whose name was not given, tortured two of his friends to death with a pistol while the said officer also broke two of his legs.

While addressing pressmen at the NUJ Secretariat yesterday with his father and a human rights group, PIDI-NIGERIA, Bello was supported with a pillow on a tricycle to narrate his ordeal. FG urges strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols as schools resume (DailyTrust)

The Federal Government has urged stakeholders in the education sector to ensure strict adherence to all agreed protocols as schools open for exit examinations classes.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman, Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, said this on Monday in Abuja at the 54th joint national briefing of the taskforce. 

According to him, though reopening of schools for exit examinations was considered necessary because the education sector is critical to the development of the nation, the reopening still remains a source for concern because schools could be a fertile ground for community transmission of the virus. UN report warns against N Korea’s ‘miniaturised’ nuclear devices (Aljazeera)

North Korea is pressing on with its nuclear weapons programme and several countries believe it has “probably developed miniaturised nuclear devices to fit into the warheads of its ballistic missiles,” according to a confidential UN report.

The report by an independent panel of experts monitoring UN sanctions said the countries, which it did not identify, believed North Korea’s past six nuclear tests had likely helped it develop miniaturised nuclear devices.

Pyongyang has not conducted a nuclear test since September 2017. Read more

NY attorney expands inquiry into Trump ‘criminal conduct’ (BBC)

A New York prosecutor seeking US President Donald Trump’s tax returns says he is investigating reported “protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organisation”.

Monday’s court filing suggests the inquiry is broader than alleged hush money payments made to two women who say they had affairs with Mr Trump.

The Supreme Court ruled last month that lawyers could examine the tax returns.

Mr Trump has repeatedly dismissed the probe, calling it a “witch hunt”. Read more

Thailand protesters openly criticise monarchy of King Maha (Aljazeera)

Speakers at a Thai anti-government protest have demanded reforms to the monarchy of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, calling for its powers to be curbed in unusually frank public comments.

Defaming the monarchy is punishable by up to 15 years in prison under Thailand’s “lese majeste” laws. Police did not stop the six speakers, but said any suspected offences would be investigated.
