A father of four, Lukman Soladoye on Tuesday appeared before a Shari’a court sitting at Magajin Gari, Kaduna for beating his wife, Kemi Soladoye, and their four children.

Soladoye said he beat his wife and children to correct them when they were wrong, adding that he loves his family and wanted the best for them.

Earlier, the complainant through her counsel B.A Tanko said she had wanted a divorce due to the incessant assault but later changed her mind and settled with her husband. Read more

Elevator Accident: Probe of doctor’s death still ongoing – NMA (Guardian)

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) said an investigation into the death of Dr Vwaere Diaso inside an elevator at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, has not been swept under the carpet.

The Secretary of NMA, Lagos branch, Dr Ismail Ajibowo, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Lagos.

Recall that Diaso, a medical house officer with General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, died on Aug. 1, as a result of injuries sustained when she was in an elevator that crashed in the staff quarters of the hospital. Read more

Lagos dislodges unauthorised traders around Badagry schools (Punch)

The Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment cleared illegal structures and dislodged unauthorised traders around some schools in the Badagry area of the state on Monday.

The state’s Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement posted on X on Tuesday.

According to Wahab, he ordered an investigation following a petition written by the authorities of Ajara Senior Secondary School, Badagry, on indiscriminate and unauthorized commercial activities in front of the school by street traders. Read more 

EU supports Nigeria with €30m to combat corruption, strengthen rule of law (Sun)

The European Union on Tuesday announced the sum of €30 million to support the strengthening of the rule of law, the fight against corruption, as well as reducing gender-based violence while promoting respect for human rights, and ensuring inclusivity for all Nigerians.

EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, made the disclosure at the launch of the programme which will be financed through the second phase of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC II) Programme, to be implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA).

She described as impressive that over 1.5 million people benefitted from ROLAC during the first phase. Read more

Subsidy Removal: FG records over N1t monthly revenue flow — Wale Edun (Tribune)

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun has disclosed that the Federation Account has witnessed improved revenue inflow since the removal of fuel subsidy from an average of N650 billion monthly to over N1 trillion in the last four months.

The Minister said this on Monday at the opening ceremony of a two-day retreat for the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) organised by the Federal Ministry of Finance in collaboration with Delta State Government, with the theme, “Creating Resilient Economy through Diversification of the Nation’s Revenue”.

Edun who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Finance, Okokon Ekanem Udo, stated that the choice of the retreat’s theme reflects the directive given by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to domestic revenue mobilisation and was very timely. Read more 

Police arrest 2 for ATM card swap in Niger (Guardian)

Two suspects have been arrested by police operatives attached to the Suleja Area Command in Niger State after they allegedly attempted to swap an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card belonging to a female victim at a commercial bank in the town.

The suspects, identified as Aver Wase and Godwin Deor, were apprehended after a police patrol team trailed their vehicle and intercepted it at the old NEPA roundabout in Suleja Town.

The driver of the vehicle, David Therma, abandoned the car and escaped. Read more

Nigerians expect magic from ill-motivated police force, says IGP (Nation)

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, November 21, said that he inherited a police force that was virtually abandoned and suffered neglect over the years with ill-motivated personnel.

The IGP, who spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives while participating in the sectoral debate, said despite the lack of motivation and operational facilities, Nigerians will not accept any excuse for failure but expect adequate performance from them.

He said police personnel were operating in a very difficult environment as a result of the neglect they have suffered over the years, especially in the area of inadequate manpower and operational facilities. Read more

Ngwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was named as the minority leader by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, a situation that didn’t go down well with some Labour Party senators.

Sen. Okechukwu Ezea from Enugu North rose to the nomination. His personal observation/objection was backed by Sen. Somalia floods kill 50 people, nearly 700,000 displaced: Disaster agency (AlJazeera)

The death toll from flash flooding caused by torrential rains in Somalia has risen to 50, with nearly 700,000 people driven from their homes, according to a government official.

With more heavy rains starting on Tuesday, the plight of people in the country is expected to worsen, he said.

“Fifty people died in the disaster … while 687,235 people were forced to flee their houses,” Mohamud Moalim Abdullahi, the director of the Somali Disaster Management Agency, said at a news conference on Monday. Read more

The hit action franchise was last on screens quite a few years ago with 2016’s Jason Bourne, with Matt Damon returning at the time to the role of the iconic CIA assassin.

It is now being reported by Deadline that a new movie is in early development, with All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger in talks to helm and develop the movie. Read more

Kino Lorber has acquired Agnieszka Holland’s critically acclaimed refugee drama Green Border for North America, the company confirmed Tuesday. Kino Lorber is planning a theatrical release for the Polish feature next year, followed by an all-platform roll-out.

The black-and-white drama follows the plight of refugees stranded in the swampy forest land that makes up the Polish-Belarusian border. The refugees, mostly from North Africa and the Middle East, were lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage into the European Union but became pawns in a geopolitical game, and were stranded between the two countries, unable to enter the EU and unable to return to Belarus. BBC “halts” Top Gear production for “foreseeable future” following Freddie Flintoff crash (DailyRecord)

BBC hit motoring show Top Gear will be halted for the “foreseeable future” following a crash during filming last year which left host Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff seriously injured.

Production of the show has since come to a standstill when former England cricket captain Flintoff, 45, was rushed to hospital in December 2022 after he was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.

The BBC announced that production would be paused on the show, which is co-presented by Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness and automotive journalist Chris Harris, after the crash as it felt “inappropriate” to continue and that a health and safety review would be underway. Read more

Dallas Marc Kelly: Man jailed for life for murdering his 4-month-old son in Cumbria (Sky)

A man has been jailed for life and must serve at least 18 years in prison for murdering his four-month-old baby son in Cumbria.

Reece Kelly, 31, from Workington, denied any involvement in Dallas Marc Kelly’s death after the baby died from a traumatic head injury in October 2021.

However, he changed his story at trial and pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his son. Read more

Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon kill 2 journalists of a pan-Arab TV station, 4 Palestinian militants (ABC)

An Israeli strike on southern Lebanon on Tuesday killed two journalists reporting for the Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen TV on the violence along the border with Israel, according to Lebanese officials and the TV station. A separate strike at another location in Lebanon killed four Palestinian members of the Hamas militant group.

The Pan-Arab Al-Mayadeen TV — politically allied with the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah — identified the journalists who were killed while reporting in the town of Tair Harfa as correspondent Farah Omar and cameraman Rabih Maamari. It said they were “martyred by treacherous Israeli targeting,” adding it was an airstrike. Read more

The United States men’s national soccer team earned a spot in the 2024 Copa America despite a 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago in the second leg of the Concacaf Nations League quarterfinal on Monday in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

The U.S. won the aggregate series 4-2 after a 3-0 victory in Austin, Texas, on Thursday. As a result, the Americans also advanced to the semifinals of the Nations League in March, a tournament in which the U.S. is the two-time defending champion.

Arsenal forward Beth Mead has been named in the England squad for the first time in a year following her return from a serious knee injury.

Red Bull chief Christian Horner forced to intervene after Max Verstappen angers F1 bosses (Mirror)

David Coulthard has said he is “sure” Christian Horner will have felt the need to intervene in the light of Max Verstappen’s comments about the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Verstappen, who has already wrapped up the drivers’ championship for 2023, claimed another race win in Nevada. However, this didn’t stop him displaying negativity towards the grand prix itself, dubbing it “99 percent show and one percent sporting event”.

The champion later took his critique further with unfavourable comparisons to the long-standing Monaco Grand Prix. Coulthard, who had multiple race wins during a Formula 1 career spent mostly with McLaren, made clear how he felt about the comments – and how he expects Horner will have reacted. Read more
