Why I made a film on #EndSARS protest –Obiakor (Sun)

It’s more than a year since the #EndSARS protest ended in what turned out to be an anticlimax, with the alleged massacre of peaceful protesters at Lekki gate, Lagos. But its echoes have continued to reverberate from time to time. To capture the watershed moment in our nation’s history, Ebuka Obiakor, a young filmmaker, has produced a film with an intriguing title “The Brim,” which he said his mum helped him to come up with.

The film, shot in locations in Lagos with a seven-actor cast, none of who is a known face in the Nigerian film industry, tells the story of one George, a British returnee who did not believe a word of the stories making the rounds, on blogs and traditional media, about the bestial brutalities of officers and men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). He felt they were fake news or that the stories were mostly exaggerated.

That was until he too, in the company of his friend, Ernest, a software developer, fell a victim, and nearly lost his life. For carrying on him a British-issued Visa, and, Ernest, a laptop with which he was doing some work for some clients, they was promptly dubbed Internet fraudsters or “Yahoo Boys.” For doing the work on “Python,” the general-purpose programming language, developed in 1991 by Python Software Foundation, Ernest was, in addition, accused, of belonging to a campus cult. Their lives were only saved when they agreed to part with certain sums, demanded by their accusers, the police operatives. No one was surprised, therefore, when George, the Defender of SARS, changed his mind after the incident, and joined the protest. His decision to use unknown faces was intentional, Obiakor explained. Censored version of Margot Robbie’s “Birds of Prey” ‘mistakenly added’ to HBO Max (Metro)

HBO Max subscribers in the US were left confused after sitting down to watch Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, if we’re being formal) and being met with an edited message at the beginning.

A disclaimer at the beginning of the 2020 DC movie, starring Margot Robbie, read: ‘This film has been modified as follows from its original version: it has been edited for content.’

As reported by CBR, the censorship of the R-rated movie was most obvious in a scene featuring Rosie Perez as tough-talking Detective Montoya, where a phrase on her NSFW T-shirt ‘had been clearly edited’, with a screenshot revealing parts of the slogan had been pixelated.

The film was also listed with a TV-14 rating, seemingly confirming that it was the television edit of the movie, rather than the full-throttle version seen in cinemas and expected on streaming platforms. Read more

French government ‘ready’ to discuss autonomy for aggrieved Guadeloupe (RFI)

Arsenal brush aside Newcastle as Howe suffers first defeat (Guardian)

Mikel Arteta’s side saw their 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions come to a painful end in last weekend’s 4-0 thrashing at Liverpool.

But second half goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli at the Emirates Stadium made it four wins from their last five league games.

Written off after their poor start to the season, Arsenal are fifth, level on points with fourth placed West Ham, as they chase a berth in next season’s Champions League.

Rejoining the race for European places represents significant progress for Arteta, but few opponents will be quite as obliging as woeful Newcastle.

Howe was in charge in person for the first time after missing last weekend’s 3-3 draw against Brentford due to a positive coronavirus test. Read more

Chelsea’s Chilwell could return in six weeks after knee injury: Tuchel (Guardian)

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says Ben Chilwell could return to action in just six weeks after the England defender suffered a worrying knee injury that prompted fears he could miss the rest of the season.

The left-back limped out of Tuesday’s 4-0 Champions League win against Juventus following a challenge from France international Adrien Rabiot.

But Tuchel said on Friday that the 24-year-old may be able to avoid surgery, allowing him to play again sooner than expected, which would be a huge boost for the Premier League leaders.

“Ben has a partial injury of his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) and the decision is to treat it conservatively,” Tuchel said.

“And the next six weeks will tell the story actually if he makes it and if he will be fully available after the six weeks, or if he needs surgery after that. Read more
