Nigerian high-life singer, Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour N’abania, has shared a story of his journey to stardom, recounting how he was once asked to leave the stage during a performance for P-Square, a popular Nigerian music duo.

In an interview released on Sunday by In My Opinion podcast, Flavour narrated how he began his music career as a choir conductor and drummer in the church.

Davido reacts to father’s N1b church donation (Nation)

Afrobeats superstar Davido has responded to his father’s generous donation of N1 billion to the Centenary Endowment Fund of the Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Church.

The Nation reported that Adedeji Adeleke made the donation in memory of his mother, Esther Adeleke, during her remembrance service.

Isaac Omodewu, chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is dead.

He was said to have died in the United States of America (USA).

Omodewu had left Nigeria in November 2023 for a medical trip.

He, however, succumbed to death after close to a year, receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment in the USA, where he was a citizen. Read more

Isese Day: Lagos declares Tuesday work-free day (Nation)

The Lagos state government has declared Tuesday, August 20, as work-free for public servants to mark this year’s Isese Day celebration.

This was announced in a circular issued by the Head of Service, Bode Agoro.

According to the circular, the governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had approved that Tuesday, 20th August, 2024 be declared a work-free day for public servants in the State. Read more 

Gov Yusuf orders probe of alleged drug supply contract across 44 Kano LGAs (Tribune)

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of a drug supply contract across the 44 Local Government Councils of the state.

This development may be related to recent allegations made by a popular skitmaker, who claimed in a video that the state government was involved in a drug supply contract.

Governor Yusuf has denied any knowledge of the contract and has directed the Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), Bar. Muhuyi Rimingado, to conduct an investigation into the allegations. Read more

CITN urges states to emulate Lagos’ revenue portal (Leadership)

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) has commended the move by the Lagos state government on the launch of the Lagos State Revenue Portal (LRP) which is targeted at simplifying the state’s revenue administration process, calling on other states to emulate the move.

President and chairman of council of the institute, Samuel Agbeluyi, in a statement, commended the initiative saying it is critical to engendering confidence in the fiscal management and governance practices of the state government particularly revenues generated internally.

Supreme Court reserves judgement on Bayelsa, Kogi guber disputes (Vanguard)

The Supreme Court, on Monday, reserved its judgement on separate appeals that are seeking to nullify results of the last governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi States.

A five-man panel of the apex court led by Justice Garba Lawal, adjourned to deliver judgements on the appeals, after all the parties adopted their final briefs of argument.

While the appeal seeking to invalidate the election of Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, was filed by candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the gubernatorial poll that held in the state on November 11, 2023, Chief Timipre Sylva, the appeal against Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State was filed by the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and its candidate, Muritala Ajaka. NEMA delivers 1,528 metric tonnes of grains to Jigawa (Channels)

The National Emergency Management Agency has delivered 1,528.2 metric tonnes of assorted grains to support the locals in Jigawa State.

In a statement posted on X.com on Monday, the agency noted that the distribution was approved by President Bola Tinubu and managed by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Kenya plans to reinstate some taxes to raise $1.2b (VOA)

The Kenyan government plans to raise about $1.2 billion by reinstating some unpopular taxes contained in a finance bill that was scrapped in the face of deadly street protests, a government minister said.

President William Ruto had warned of a funding shortfall after he decided in June to drop the controversial tax hikes after a bloody day in Nairobi that saw the storming of parliament and police firing live bullets on demonstrators.
