Identity of man who jumped into Lagos Lagoon revealed (Punch)

The man who drowned after he reportedly jumped into the Lagoon in Lagos on Friday has been identified as a staff of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria. A staff of FRCN, who pleaded anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the deceased was a driver attached to an Assistant Director in charge of Information Communication Technology unit of the corporation. Police arrest 7 over transport unions’ crisis in Ekiti (Guardian)

The Ekiti Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the recent violence involving two transport unions. The suspects are all males with ages ranging from 20 years to 32 years. Osun closes two forest reserves over illegal activities (Nation)

The Government of Osun says it has closed two forest reserves in Irewole and Isokan communities over illegal activities of plank dealers. Prince Tunde Ajilore, the Special Adviser to Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Forestry, Natural and Mineral Reserves, made this known to newsmen on Friday in Osogbo. Ajilore said the closure was to ensure the state’s resources were not siphoned through illegal means. Read more

Army begins ‘Crocodile Smile III’ in Bayelsa, urges residents to be calm (Guardian)

The 16 Brigade of the Nigerian Army on Friday commenced `Operation Crocodile Smile III’ exercise across some states of the Niger Delta, to stem the tide of pipeline vandalism in the region. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Maj.-Gen. Jamil Sarham, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Port-Harcourt, said the 2018 operation would not be different as officers and soldiers had been advised to abide by the rules. INEC to display voters’ register in Anambra, November 6 (Guardian)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will display voters’ register in Anambra between Nov.6 and Nov. 12, 2018. Mr Leo Nkedife, Head, Voter Education and Publicity of INEC made the disclosure in Awka on Friday. Nkedife said the voters’ register would be displayed in all the 326 electoral wards of the state. 1,100 journalists murdered over a decade – UN (Vanguard)

No fewer than 1,100 journalists were murdered over a decade, the UN has said. In 2018 alone, at least 88 journalists have been killed, according to the UN. UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, in a video message for the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists’, marked annually on Nov. 2, called the killing of journalists “outrageous”. Khashoggi murder: Saudi prince ‘said he was dangerous Islamist’ (BBC)

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told the US he considered murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi to be a dangerous Islamist, media reports say. Prince Mohammed’s reported phone call to the White House came before Saudi Arabia admitted he had been killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Saudi Arabia has denied the reports in the Washington Post and New York Times. A Saudi national and well-known critic of Saudi rulers, Khashoggi was killed and his body dismembered on 2 October. Two men docked for stealing bus (Nation)

Two men  on Friday appeared  before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over alleged theft of a Mazda bus valued at N2.1 million. A Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State, on Friday dissolved the six-month marriage between Saratu Abdullahi and her husband, Malam Ja’afaru, over lack of care and inconsiderate behaviour. Man admits using bottle to tear another’s face (Nation)

An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State will on Dec. 11 sentence a 20-year-old man who used a broken bottle to tear the face of another. The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, gave the date following guilty plea by Mohammed Bashir arraigned on a count charge of assault. Kubeinje remanded the accused in prison pending review of the facts of the case and sentencing. The Prosecutor, Insp. Lucky Ihiehie, had told the court that Bashir tore the face of Mr Abdulahi Abubakar  during a quarrel at 6.00p.m. on Oct. 26,  at  Gidan Pali, Ojota Main Garrage, Lagos. Read more
