Ikeja Bus Terminal: Lagos to rake in N269bn yearly (NewTelegraph)

With the plan to deploy new 800 buses at its newly inaugurated Ikeja Bus Terminal, Lagos State Government is posed to rake in additional N268.8 billion annually, New Telegraph’s has learnt. The multi-billion naira facility is expected to take care of about four million people on a daily basis across the state. The facility covers about 1.14 hectares. Based on New Telegraph’ s calculation, at the rate of N200,00 per trip for four million passengers commuting to and fro Ikeja , the state would realise N88 million daily, N5.6 billion weekly, N22.4 billion monthly and N268.8 billion yearly. Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Ladi Lawanson, had disclosed during a tour of the project that the state government would deploy over 800 buses soon to start operations at the newly inaugurated Ikeja Bus Terminal. Govt kicks against street closure (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has warned the residents of the state to desist from the practice of locking down their streets with iron gates, saying it will henceforth sanction defaulters. The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, stated this on Thursday at the 2018 ministerial press briefing to commemorate the third year of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in office. He said, “There is a law in Lagos State that forbids residents from installing street gates indiscriminately. The residents must obey the state laws. We are not saying you should not have gates in your streets but where the gates were installed, they should be manned 24 hours. Read more

Bear with us, Ambode begs Lagosians on road construction hardship (SUN)

Lagos Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has appealed to residents to bear with government for the inconvenience being experienced as a result of the construction work in the state. He said the projects were designed to change the face of Lagos for good and improve on the economy. Ambode, who spoke during an inspection tour of major ongoing projects in the state, assured that the Oshodi-Airport Interchange will be ready next September. The governor said the Ilaje and Bariga, as well as a new jetty, through which Ikorodu, Apapa, Lagos Island, Badagry, Ajah and Epe could be linked, via the waterways, would be ready in July. “We have just seen the progress of work on the Airport Road. I want to appeal to Lagosians to bear with us. As much as possible, we have tried to reduce the impact of traffic on residents and other road users, believing that it is in the overall interest of all, that we should have a standard road that leads to our international airport. Vice-Chancellor of Augustine University Ilara-Epe, Lagos State, Prof. Steve Afolami, has said that education, which is the bedrock of the development of any nation, needs the best attention and positive contribution of everyone. He stated this at the third matriculation ceremony of the university, which held at the institution’s auditorium recently. According to him, enablement for some level of income into every home will improve the peace and stability of homes so that children can grow up in an atmosphere devoid of tension and rancor traceable to poverty and lack of steady means of livelihood. UNILAG targets Africa’s research hub in five years, establishes biodiversity conservation center (Guardian)

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has expressed its commitment to become the research hub for Africa in the next five years. Indeed, the citadel of learning has already established six research centres to help accelerate multi-disciplinary research in the institution. In pursuance of this agenda, the school’s faculty of science recently inaugurated a Centre for Biodiversity Conservation And Ecosystem Management (CEBCEM). Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, at the inauguration ceremony, said: “This inauguration re-emphasises the new policy drive of the University, to make the University of Lagos the research hub for Africa in the next five years. This was amply exemplified by two of our centers, who recently won the bid to host the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centre of Excellence.” Read more

Workers must have human skills – Ambode (Punch)

The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Thursday said directors in the state civil service must possess human skills in order to communicate effectively with their subordinates and increase production. The governor, who spoke at a two-day training workshop for directors in Ikeja, Lagos, said poor human skills would hamper productivity in the system. He said, “These interpersonal skills are what a manager will use to work with his or her employees. Some people are born with good human skills; others must work much harder at it. Human skills are critical for all managers because they work with people.” Read more

Lagos couple laments hardship after birth of triplets (Punch)

A Lagos couple say the burden of caring for their six children, including a set of triplets, is weighing them down. The triplets – Prince, Praise and Precious – were reportedly delivered in September 2015 after the couple had decided to stop having children. The husband, 53-year-old Ifeanyi Amadu, lamented that he lost his job after his wife was delivered of the triplets. Ifeanyi, an indigene of Ukpo town, in the Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, said their condition was worsened after a Toyota Sienna, which served as the family’s means of livelihood, was impounded by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority in the Ajegunle area. VIO denies issuing roadworthiness certificate without computerised vehicle test (Punch)

The Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) of the FCT has denied allegations that it is issuing vehicle roadworthiness certificate to motorists without their vehicles undergoing the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Test. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the agency, Mr Kalu Emetu, made the denial in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. Emetu said the allegations were baseless as the Headquarters of the office was not issuing roadworthiness certificate, and that such documents were issued only at the Computerised Test Centres after the vehicle had been inspected and found worthy of the certificate. Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, administered oath of office on the Chief Judge, Justice Olanrewaju Olutoyin Akeredolu, yesterday, at the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka, Akure. He described the swearing-in as the culmination of a painstaking process, which started with the state Judicial Service Commission, through the short-listing and recommendation to his office. ‘I’m a truck driver by day, robber at night’ (Vanguard)

A truck driver that was arrested in the early hours of yesterday in Badagry area of Lagos State, has said he drives a truck by day and turns to a robber at night, “but I do not carry gun.” He was nabbed after a foiled robbery operation and an attempt to rape his female victim. The suspect, Yusuf, as gathered, scaled the fence into the building at about 1a.m., after which he entered one of the apartments where he dispossessed a woman of her valuables. Not done, he proceeded to another apartment where he met a woman identified as Mrs Akanbi. Read more

Uganda ‘considering’ Israel’s request to take 500 migrants (Abcnews)

A Ugandan government minister says the country is “positively considering” Israel’s request to take in 500 Eritrean or Sudanese migrants rejected by Israel. It is the first official confirmation of an agreement to take in African migrants whose planned deportations have caused widespread protests in Israel. Musa Ecweru, a Ugandan minister in charge of refugees, says the migrants will be vetted before receiving asylum. Uganda’s government has previously denied reports of a deal with Israel to take in the deported migrants. Israel considers most of about 35,000 migrants to be job seekers and says it has no legal obligation to keep them. The Africans say they face danger if they return home. Read more

Corbyn accuses May of waiting on Trump over response to Syria crisis (Guardian)

Jeremy Corbyn has accused the UK government of “waiting for instructions” from the US on how to proceed in the Syrian crisis after the allies vowed to work closely together on an international response. The Labour leader warned that military intervention against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in the wake of a devastating chemical weapons attack on the rebel-held town of Douma risked escalating an already devastating conflict. He urged the UK government to push for an independent United Nations-led investigation into the attack so that those responsible could be held to account. Russia has repeatedly blocked such a move at the UN security council since the start of the civil war seven years ago. Read more

Korean Air ‘nut rage’ heiress sister ‘throws water at man during business meeting’ (Skynews)

The sister of Korean Air’s infamous “nut rage” heiress has been accused of having her own tantrum during a business meeting. Cho Hyun-min reportedly hurled water at a man during a business meeting, according to Maeil Business Newspaper, a Seoul-based business daily. The man worked for an agency that makes adverts for Korean Air, the country’s flagship carrier. After throwing water at him, Ms Cho then screamed before sending him out of the room, the newspaper added. Read more
