Ikeja Electric clarifies planned power outage within network (Guardian)

Ikeja Electric Plc says the planned power outage within some parts of its network from Oct. 11 will not result in a full-day blackout for customers during the period.

Mr Akinola Ayeni, Community and Media Relations Manager, Ikeja Electric, made the clarification in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ikeja.

Ayeni said the outage was for the upgrade of the 132kv lines by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and would be between 8 a.m and 6 p.m. daily.

”Subsequently, the power supply will be restored to customers between 6 p.m and 8 a.m for the duration of the upgrade.

“The upgrade is aimed at expanding the conductor capacity and ultimately improving power supply to customers. Read more

Carbon-free Lagos: Sanwo-Olu, experts call for action (Vanguard)

Lagos State Governor, Mr Bababjide Sanwo-Olu and experts in environment sector have stressed the need for concerted efforts to mitigate environmental challenges as urban population estimated to reach 70 per cent from present 55 per cent by year 2050.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mrs Folasade Jaji, made the call on Monday, at the event to commemorate World Habitat Day, 2021, organised by the state Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, held at the state’s Secretariat Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

Speaking to the theme of the event: “Accelerating Urban Action for a carbon-free world,” the governor, noted that there are various challenges affecting the world and environment, “viz-a- vis, the way we live, work and play.”

He continued: “Accelerating Urban Action for carbon free world is quite in line with the determination to implement decisive climate actions as major contents of the audacious smart City initiative of our administration. Read more

Lagos Assembly approves supplementary budget of N1.25t (Tribune)

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, approved the request of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to revise the 2021 appropriation law.

Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, read the various sectoral allocations on the floor during plenary and announced the new appropriation law as N1,256,567,592,651 trillion on the floor of the house.

According to Yishawu, N513,343,338,737 was approved for recurrent from the consolidated revenue fund.

He added that N743,224,253,914 from the development fund was approved for capital expenditure both for the year ended December 31, 2021. Read more

Special status: Lagos demands one per cent of Nigeria’s revenue as South-West states meet (Punch)

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday demanded one per cent share in the revenue allocation formula after stating that the special status of the state and its prosperity directly or indirectly has multiplying effects on the South-West region and the entire country.

He also proposed that the revenue sharing formula should be 34 per cent for Federal Government including one per cent for FCT – Abuja, 42 per cent for State Governments, 23 per cent for Local Governments and one per cent for Lagos State (special status) as against the current revenue allocation formula, which were 52.68 per cent, 26.72 per cent and 20.60 per cent for Federal Government, 36 state governments and 774 local governments respectively.

He spoke during the opening event of a two-day South-West zonal public hearing on review of revenue allocation formula by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, in Lagos State on Monday. Read more

DSS Operative Gunned Down In Imo (DailyTrust)

An operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been murdered in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

The incident came less than 48 hours after the office of the agency was razed in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Our correspondent gathered that the officer, identified as Prince Nwachinaemere Ezemuonye Ozuzu, from Umuoyo, Irete in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State was shot dead on Owerri Onitsha Road.

The officer was said to have been deployed for an official duty in Anambra few hours after the burning of DSS office in Nnewi. Read more

Buhari to present 2022 budget to NASS on Thursday (Guardian)

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to present the 2022 budget to a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege has said.

Omo-Agege made this known when he presided over Senate Tuesday’s plenary.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the president had earlier on Tuesday, presented a revised 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) to the Senate for approval.

The revised MTEF/FSP provides the basic structure for the estimates and assumptions that underline the annual budget. Read more

Olu of Warri abolishes Ologbotsere title, reduces it to nickname (Vanguard)

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has abolished the  traditional title of Ologbotsere in Itsekiri Kingdom, saying that the erstwhile holder of the title should no longer  be  addressed as such across Itsekiri Kingdom and other parts of the world.

Going by this development, Ayiri Emami is no longer Ologbotsere of the kingdom.

The monarch made the pronouncement  before descendants of the Ologbotsere family at a meeting in his palace on Tuesday.

The monarch, who stepped into venue of the meeting with Ologbotsere descendants  in the palace, acknowledged greetings from the chiefs, the Ologbotsere family members and others in the hall.

Undergraduates studying education in public varsities to get N75K per semester (Punch)

The Federal Government has approved the sum of N75,000 as stipend per semester for students undergoing degree programmes in Education in public universities in Nigeria.

Also, the Nigeria Certificate in Education students will get N50,000 as stipend per semester as part of the deliberate effort of the government to attract the best brains into the teaching profession as promised by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), last year.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, announced this on Tuesday at the World Teachers’ Day celebration held at Eagle Square, Abuja.

Adamu, whose speech was read by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, said his ministry would collaborate with the state governments to ensure automatic employment for the students on graduation. Read more

Kaduna government demolishes ‘hundreds of houses’ in Zaria (Guardian)

Hundred of houses and other residential buildings were demolished, at Graceland behind the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Kaduna State as the state authorities began a major demolition exercise on Monday.

Many residents of the area were seen wailing and weeping, as they evacuated their properties from the demolished houses in a hurry before the operation of the bulldozer deployed by the Kaduna State Urban Property Development Authority (KASUPDA) for the exercise.

Sources said the land, on which the demolished houses were sited, belongs to the Aviation College.

The communities and the College have been battling in court over the ownership of the land. Read more

California couple, 3-year-old son found dead at Airbnb during Mexico vacation (NYPost)

A California family’s trip to Mexico reportedly turned into tragedy when the couple and their 3-year-old son were found dead in an Airbnb apartment — after an apparent gas leak.

Jose Nunez Jr., his wife, Maria, and their son Jayden, who were visiting relatives in Mexico, were all found dead in the same room at the Airbnb, according to WSFA.

Trini Jacobo, the father’s aunt, said that other family members staying at the Airbnb were unharmed.

“They’re still in Mexico and they’re going to be performing an autopsy and definitely getting to the root of what caused their deaths. So we’re not sure about any specifics at this time,” Jacobo told KBAK. Read more

Why 26 Korean words have been added to Oxford English Dictionary (BBC)

Whether it’s watching a show like Squid Game or listening to BTS hits such as Butter or Dynamite, chances are you’ve had some kind of Korean influence in your life.

And now that South Korean influence has reached the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

The “accepted authority on the English language” has added 26 new words of Korean origin to its latest edition.

With these additions, “we are all riding the crest of the Korean wave” the OED says in a statement. Read more

Nobel in physics: Climate science breakthroughs earn prize (BBC)

Three scientists have been awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics for their work to understand complex systems, such as the Earth’s climate.

Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann and Giorgio Parisi were announced as the winners at an event in Stockholm.

Research by Manabe and Hasselmann led to computer models of the Earth’s climate that can predict the impact of global warming.

The winners will share the prize money of 10 million krona (£842,611). Read more

Ex-porn star allegedly kills son, 2, dumps body on supermarket counter (NYPost)

A former Hungarian porn star has been accused of fatally stabbing her two-year-old son during a bitter custody battle — and dumping his body at the checkout counter of an Italian supermarket, according to a report.

Katalin Erzsebet Bradacs, 44, entered the Lidl chain store in Città della Pieve, a community in the central region of Umbria, on Friday and shouted for help as she placed her son Alex Juhasz’s body on the counter, Newsflash reported.

The toddler had been stabbed nine times across his chest and neck, according to the report. His blood-soaked T-shirt and his mother’s jumper were later discovered in an abandoned building nearby.

Bradacs was arrested and charged with murder after a knife was found in her handbag, the news outlet reported. Read more

Ndidi doubtful for Eagles November World Cup qualifiers (Punch)

Wilfred Ndidi could miss the Super Eagles Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers in November after a scan revealed a more serious problem than initially expected, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigerian midfielder has been ruled out of the Eagles Group C games against Central African Republic over two legs in Lagos and Douala, Cameroon due to a hamstring injury he suffered during Leicester’s recent 2-2 draw with Burnley.

He is unlikely to see action again until after the November international break missing at least seven games for the Foxes.

The Eagles face Liberia in Monrovia on November 11 before hosting Cape Verde three days later at the Teslim Balogun stadium.
