The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured the residents of the state that his administration will remain committed to providing even development without any form of religion or political affiliation.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke through his Commissioner for Communication and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, in an exclusive chat with The PUNCH on Tuesday, said he would continue what he had been doing since he assumed office.

Ireti Heeba Kingibe of Labor Party has been declared winner of Saturday’s senatorial election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Kingibe defeated incumbent Senator Philip Aduda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who was elected into the senate in 2011.

Declaring the results at the collation center, GSS Garki, Abuja, the returning officer for the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Professor Sani Saka, said she polled 202,175 votes to defeat her main challenger, Aduda, who scored 100,544 votes while APC’s Zakari Angulu secured 78, 905 and candidate of NNPP got 3,802 votes. Air Peace Chairman debunks one-on-one dinner with Sanwo-Olu (Independent)

Mr. Allen Onyema, the Chairman of Air Peace has denied the claim that he is planning a one-on-one interactive dinner with Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State.

A statement personally signed by Onyema and made available to journalists said that he was not aware of the interaction with the state government.

Nigerian doctor wins World Lung Health Award (Nation)

A pulmonologist and associate professor at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL), Dr. Uju Ozoh, has won the World Lung Health Award.

According to the UNILAG website, Ozoh will receive the award at the opening ceremony of the American Thoracic Society 2023 International Conference scheduled for May 19 to 24, 2023, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Centre, Washington DC, United States of America (U.S.A).

The pulmonologist’s areas of research interest include airway diseases, pulmonary complications of respiratory exposures, chronic medical conditions, tobacco epidemiology and obstructive sleep apnea. Read more

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has defeated Governor Okezie Ikpeazu in the race for the Abia South Senatorial District seat.

Abaribe who ran on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), beat the governor who belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dr Dayo Hepzibah Oladebeye: Selected Speeches of a Quintessential Rector, 2018-2022’’, the pioneer head of the newly established Department of Library and Information Science, Dr Emmanuel Olu Ayeni, who did the compilation and publication of the book, said he initiated it to honour the former rector.

Trump melts down over Murdoch admitting Fox lied about election fraud (RollingStone)

The fallout between former President Donald Trump and Fox News continued on Tuesday following the release of a deposition from Fox Corporation Chairman Rupert Murdoch. The deposition stems from a defamation suit brought against Fox News by Dominion Voting Systems, which alleges the network knowingly misled the public about claims of fraud in the 2020 election. 

In his testimony, Murdoch admits that hosts on the network aired false claims about the election and alleged voter fraud, and that company executives could have intervened to prevent their broadcast. 

The admissions from Murdoch drew ire from Trump, who has spent the last several days attacking his once-favorite channel for their barely-less-than-sycophantic coverage of him. Read more

Top US diplomat visits Central Asia with eye on Russia (DW)

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday was visiting Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and meeting his counterparts from all five former Soviet republics of Central Asia. 

The trip is Blinken’s first in the region, where Russia and China play a key role.

The top US diplomat announced a $25 million (€23 million) support package to help Central Asian nations diversify trade routes and create employment. Read more 

German male babysitter convicted of sexually abusing minors as young as 1 month old (AlArabiya)

A 45-year-old German man who had offered babysitting services online was convicted Tuesday on charges of sexually abusing children in a case that shocked even veteran investigators and led them to uncover numerous other abuse suspects.

The regional court in Cologne sentenced the defendant, whose name wasn’t released for privacy reasons, to 14 years and six months in prison. It also ordered him held in secure confinement after the end of his sentence.

Prosecutors had asked the court to impose a 15-year sentence, the maximum length normally permitted under German law, arguing that the defendant’s crimes were particularly grave. Read more

Uganda prepares for feisty battle with Nigeria for World Cup (Guardian)

On paper, Nigeria is not expected to fret when they are confronted by Uganda in football. Nigeria is ranked far ahead of the East African country in all categories of the game, including youth football.

Nigeria is a perennial contestant in the African U-20 Nations Cup, which they have won seven times, three more than their closest rival, Ghana.

In contrast, Uganda has only featured in the competition three times, playing in the final game at the last edition in 2021. But having tasted the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which a semifinal placing guarantees, the Ugandans want to get there again. And to do that, they must beat Nigeria on Friday.

Noel Le Graet has resigned as president of France’s football federation (FFF) amid misconduct including sexual harassment and a damning audit, the federation said on Tuesday.

Le Graet, head of the French Football Federation (FFF) since 2011, has denied wrongdoing and said on Tuesday that he would remain in the sport, with FIFA offering him leadership of its Paris bureau.
