Internet fraudster burns girlfriend to death over infidelity (Punch)

A self-acclaimed Internet fraudster, Victor Orji, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly setting his girlfriend, Mariam Alabi, ablaze in the Ojo area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Orji, who accused his girlfriend of infidelity, poured petrol all over her body and allegedly set her ablaze on Saturday, December 7, 2019, at his place of residence on the Army Post Service Housing Estate, opposite the Lagos State University, Ojo.

After Orji had perpetrated the crime, residents of the area apprehended him and rushed Alabi to hospital for treatment.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, Alabi died on Sunday due to the severe burns she suffered when her lover set her ablaze. Read more

Building collapse: Two churches, 17 houses shut in Ikorodu (Nation)

For violating town planning laws, officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) at the weekend shut down 19 buildings in Igbogbo Baiyeku, Ikorodu.

General Manager, LASBCA, Mr. Abiola Kosegbe, led the enforcement team of the agency, escorted by officials of the State Taskforce, which also included the chairman, Igbogbo Baiyeku Local Council Development Area, Olusesan Daini.

Two churches were among the buildings sealed. One of them is the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, and a Cherubim and Seraphim church on Bamgbose Street in the area. Read more

Hoodlums attack Lagos community, destroy vehicles, loot shops (Punch)

There was pandemonium in the early hours of Sunday on Freedom Street in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State as hoodlums stormed the area, burgled shops and vandalised several vehicles.

It was gathered that the hoodlums, numbering about 100, were returning from a party around 2am when they attacked the community.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the hoodlums vandalised about 10 vehicles parked on the street and looted five shops. Read more

Residents lament government neglect as bridge links Ejigbo, Okota (Guardian)

For residents of Bucknor, Jakande Gate, Isheri Osun, Ijegun, Ikotun, Igando, Ijegemo, Ijedodo and environs in Lagos State, a relief from the intractable traffic on the Jakande Gate/Isolo route came on stream with the commissioning of De Prinocc link bridge at Oke Ogbere from the Oke-Afa canal waterside in Ejigbo to Community Road in Ago Palace Way, Okota.

The commissioning coincided with the maiden weeklong celebration of Oke-Ogbere Community Day, which the Baale, High Chief Tajudeen Amoo Orilowo, said would reunite indigenes and mobilise residents to promote the link bridge.

Ogbere shares border with Isolo, Amuwo-Odofin, Ejigbo, Egbe and Isheri Olofin. Residents of Community Road are however appealing to the government to repair the wide unpaved road that stretched for several kilometres off Ago Palace Way with the anticipated influx of road users. A medical expert  has  linked frequent use of tissue paper popularly known as toilet roll to one of the root cause of cervical cancer in women.

Disclosing this during the 2019 Beauty West Africa Exhibition in Lagos, an  Indonesian traditional health specialist, at Tirta Ayu Spa, recalled that toilet tissue was a consumer product used at homes, offices, restaurants, hotel, either as facial tissue (paper handkerchiefs), napkins, bathroom tissue and household towels for hygiene purposes. According to one of the Managers for traditional V-Spa Tirta Ayu, Ibu Isti, Tissue paper is made from recycled paper and gives dioxin which is an artificial whitener so it is not good for use.” Read more

Pilgrims pray for Nigeria’s unity (Nation)

Pilgrims from Lagos State to this year’s holy journey in Israel yesterday offered special prayers for the unity and national development of Nigeria.

The service, held at the Ramada Centre in Jerusalem, was attended by dignitaries, including Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf; the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Mrs Adebunmi Adekanye and Chairman of the state Health Service Commission, Dr Bayo Aderiye.

PFN faults new law prescribing levy for Christian marriage certificate (Guardian)

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has described the newly introduced marriage certificate law for Christians by the Federal Government as outrageous and unacceptable. National President of PFN, Rev. (Dr.) Felix Omobude, in a statement issued in Benin City at the weekend, cautioned against what he termed anti-Christian law on the Church in Nigeria by the Ministry of Interior.

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Interior recently announced a compulsory N30,000 licence charge for Christian worship centres to conduct marriages in Churches and N21,000 for each marriage certificate. Omobude, who added that the policy was not only exploitative but an attempt to commercialise Christian marriages in the country, said the PFN would use all legitimate means to make the Federal Government to rescind on the new marriage certificate law. Pensacola attack is presumed terrorism – FBI (BBC)

The FBI says it is treating Friday’s deadly attack on a Florida navy base as a presumed terrorist attack.

The Saudi gunman – who was training at the Pensacola site – killed three sailors before he was shot dead.

Special agent Rachel Rojas said the FBI was trying to determine if he had acted alone or had connections to a group.

She said other Saudi students had had been questioned but not arrested. They were reportedly confined to the base and co-operating with investigators. Read more

Jesse Lingard has hit back at a Manchester City fan who directed a monkey chant towards him during Manchester United’s 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The incident occurred in the second half as both Lingard and Fred were pelted with objects in the corner of the pitch in front of City’s fans. Television footage also caught one City supporter making a monkey gesture towards Lingard. NCF tips Nigeria for glory as team depart for South Africa (Guardian)

The national U-19 cricket team departed Nigeria yesterday for South Africa ahead of the 2020 U-19 World Cup slated to hold from January 17 to February 9. Prior to leaving for South Africa, the team, made up of 18 players and two officials, were treated to a farewell reception by the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) at the TBS Lagos.

For being the first cricket national team to play at the World Cup in any level, the NCF assured Nigerians that they had been given adequate preparation to excel at the championship. The team, according to the NCF, are traveling early for the World Cup to acclimatise to the weather condition of host South Africa and also train in a high condition facility before the event begins next year. Speaking at the presentation and farewell ceremony organised for the cricket team, NCF Vice President, Uyi Akpata said the federation decided to organise the ceremony to appreciate the players as worthy ambassadors of the country.
