A Nigerian Air Force (NAF), fighter jet engaged in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in the north east has bombarded a logistic base and stronghold belonging to members of the Islamic States of West African Province(ISWAP), terrorists and killed scores of terrorists.

The bombardment which took place at Sambisa Forest and the Tumbuns in Borno State, left several of the terrorists and injured.

ISWAP Leader Fiya Ba Yuram, is feared killed in the attack. Fiya Fiya Ba Yuram is the current ISWAP leader of Sambisa Forest who took over the leadership of the group after the death of Abubakar Shekau.

FG begins work to reclaim road from Ladipo market (Guardian)

To prevent traders in Ladipo auto-spare parts market from returning to the road, the Federal Government, yesterday, started reclamation of right of way with landscape work along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

This followed evacuation of encumberance  on the area by Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force), led by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Shola Jejeloye on Sunday.

Also, the task force, who were stationed at the market with trucks, arrested some recalcitrant commercial motorcyclists plying the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

Consultant to Hitech Construction Company Limited, Ayodele Bada, told The Guardian that work will start in the place  to prevent traders returning to the road.

He said: “Consequent upon the rehabilitation of the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, this is another phase in the work. Lighting is coming up. So, this aspect we are embarking on is the landscape work. Read more 

Borno moves to reconstruct former Boko Haram stronghold (DailyTrust)

The Borno State government has confirmed its readiness to reconstruct both public and residential structures in a former Boko Haram stronghold recently recaptured by the military.

The State Commissioner Ministry of Reconstruction Rehabilitation and Resettlement (MRRR), Engr. Mustapha Gubio, said this after a visit to Gudumbali town, headquarters of Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno.

During the inauguration of the resettlement committee last month, Governor Babagana Zulum had charged the military to recapture Gudumbali town to enable rebuilding and resettlement process.

In 2014, Gudumbali town witnessed its first attack by Boko Haram and the residents were forced to flee to Monguno and Maiduguri respectively. Read more

Police nab 8 suspects for Osun NURTW boss’ attack, disappearance (Guardian)

The Osun State Police Command has arrested eight suspects in connection with the attack and disappearance of the chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Apomu branch, Isokan Local Council of the state, Kazeem Alli.

The police said Ali, who is also a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, was attacked by some suspected hoodlums at his motor park.

  It was gathered that Ali, popularly known as Kekere Kasuma, was whisked away by his assailants around 9:50p.m. on Saturday, after he was macheted.

  The Command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the arrest yesterday, said  the chairman of the NURTW was whisked away by some unknown persons from his motor park at Apomu with a Toyota Corolla marked: APM 203 AA. Read more

Food prices rose in July 2022 – NBS (Vanguard)

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), says prices of selected food items increased in July.

It made the declaration in its Selected Food Prices Watch Report for July 2022 released in Abuja on Monday.

The NBS stated that the average price of 1kg of white beans rose by 23.22 per cent from N444.21 in July 2021 to N547.38 in July 2022.

“On a month-on-month basis, the price increased by 2.09 per cent from N536.17 in June 2022 to N547.38 in July 2022.’’ It added. Read more

NBA conference: Adiche gathers N3.2m for female footballers (Punch)

Gray Busey: Point Break star charged with sex offences at horror film fan convention (Skynews)

The actor is widely known for his role in Point Break, as well as his best actor Oscar nomination for his turn as the title role in the 1978 film The Buddy Holly Story. 

Busey, 78, was charged with two counts of fourth degree criminal sexual assault, one count of attempted criminal sexual contact and one count of harassment, Cherry Hill Police said.

Fourth degree sexual assault carries a sentence of up to 18 months, should the defendant be found guilty.

The actor had been visiting the annual Monster Mania Convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Cherry Hill, Philadelphia, last weekend.

He had been a featured guest at the event, which is centred on horror films and merchandise.

Though police did not name the actor in its press release, the details were confirmed in US media.

Sky News has contacted Busey’s representatives for comment.

At least 32 killed in India as monsoonal rains lash northern states (CNN)

At least 32 people have died since Friday in flash flooding and landslides triggered by heavy monsoonal rains in two of India’s northern states.

The rainfall has overwhelmed villages, sweeping away houses and leaving residents stranded as rescue crews race to evacuate survivors.

Twenty-seven were killed in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh and, as of Monday, six people were still missing, the state government said, adding that many of the deaths were caused by homes collapsing and other accidents.

It’s just the latest in a mounting death toll related to heavy rainfall in the state since the start of monsoon at the end of June. At least 244 people have died in Himachal Pradesh since the onset of the season, according to the state report. Read more

Nudity warnings and anti-bullying training to be given on TV sets in industry move, says union (SKYNews)

Actors are set to be given anti-bullying and harassment training, as well as advance nudity warnings, as part of a move by major TV organisations to “tackle inappropriate behaviour” in the industry.

Performing arts union Equity announced its new “statement of commitment” developed alongside broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, HBO, Disney, and Apple TV+ to help deliver “real and lasting change”.

In total, 21 organisations have backed the move “towards a culture in which everyone working in the TV industry feels able to call out unacceptable behaviour and that nobody is above being challenged: no one is untouchable”, the union said.

Representatives from the organisations have agreed to ensure safe casting and audition spaces, to appoint safeguarding contacts on set, and to put clear policies in place for making and addressing concerns and complaints of bullying and harassment. Read more

Officials: Landslide at Shiite shrine in Iraq kills 7 (ABC1¹)

A landslide collapsed the ceiling of a Shiite shrine in central Iraq over the weekend and killed at least seven people, including a child, officials said Monday as rescuers continued to search for survivors.

The landslide struck Qattarat al-Imam Ali shrine near the holy city of Karbala, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Baghdad, on Saturday.

According to Iraq’s civil defense, the landslide hit the ceiling of the shrine, which lies in a natural depression, causing it to cave in and dumping a torrent of rock and mud inside the structure. The entrance, walls and the minarets of the shrine, which was built on the place of a water source in the desert, remained standing.

Among the dead were four women, two men and a child, the civil defense said, adding that search teams had rescued six people. On Monday, rescuers were using a bulldozer to try to remove the rubble and search for survivors. Read more

Cineworld confirms it is considering bankruptcy (BBC)

Cineworld has confirmed it is considering filing for bankruptcy in the US, as the cinema chain continues to struggle with $5bn worth of debt.

But the company, which also owns the Picturehouse chain in the UK, insisted it’s cinemas “remain open for business” and that there would be “no significant impact” on jobs.

Cineworld employs more than 28,000 people globally.

Like other cinema chains, Cineworld was hit hard by the pandemic.

Many theaters were forced to close for extended periods during the lockdowns, or had to operate at a reduced capacity due to social distancing rules. Read More

Sports minister charges Joshua, Usman to bounce back from defeats (Leadership)

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has charged boxer, Anthony Joshua; UFC fighter, Kamaru Usman, and the women’s national U20 football team, the Falconets, should not allow their defeats over the weekend dampen their spirits.

Nigerian born Joshua and Usman lost World Title bouts in boxing and mixed martial arts, respectively while the Falconets crashed out of the FIFA U20 Women World Cup at the quarter final stage.

Dare in a statement by his media aide, Kola Daniel, said in spite of their losses, Joshua, Usman and Falconets can keep their heads up because they gave their best and performed gallantly.

NBBF mourns ex Olympian, Amaka Adibeli (Guardian) 

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has condoled the family and friends of former Nigerian international, Amaka Adibeli, who passed on last week.

In a statement by the NBBF President, Musa Kida, the federation described the demise of the member of the D’Tigress 2003 Afrobasket Championship as tragic, which has left the basketball team in deep shock and state of mourning.

“The former First Bank captain will forever remain in our hearts because we have lost an irreplaceable gem. Her career trajectory and achievements indicated that she was a true professional,” Kida said.

FG sets up 12-man committee to produce Sports Book of Record (Vanguard)

The Federal Government has set up a 12-man Committee to work towards the successful Production and Second Launch of the Sports Book of Record, with a view to documenting athletes’ achievements for posterity.

The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare while inaugurating the Committee today in his office in Abuja, called on them to work assiduously towards ensuring the production and launch of a one stop shop document for the country’s sportsmen and women as well as their achievements, both past and present.

This he said, is to ensure that the sacrifices and patriotic zeal of the athletes are written in gold and documented accordingly.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, Dare charged the Committee to be proactive and approach the assignment with utmost responsibility and patriotism, also urging them to bring their wealth of experience to bear in ensuring a successful production and launching of the Record Book. Western and Southern Open: Caroline Garcia and Borna Coric claim historic wins (BBC)

France’s Caroline Garcia and Croatia’s Borna Coric both created history as they claimed victories in the finals at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Garcia, 28, became the first qualifier to win a WTA 1000 title with her 6-2 6-4 win against Petra Kvitova.

In the men’s final, Coric, the world number 152, became the lowest-ranked player to claim a Masters Trophy.

He beat Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (7-0) 6-2.

The previous holder of the record was then-world number 143 Roberto Carretero of Spain, who won in Hamburg in 1996.

Coric has been as high as 12th in the ATP rankings but was absent for a year with a shoulder injury and only returned to the circuit in March.
