It’s illegal to manage COVID-19 patient without permission – Lagos govt (Tribune)

The Lagos State government has classified as illegal the management of COVID-19 patients by private facilities in the state without permission from the state.

The State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi disclosed this at a press briefing on COVID-19 held on Friday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

Abayomi stressed that every COVID-19 patient in the state must be known to the government person for adequate data capturing.

He warned that “Every person with COVID-19 in Lagos state must be known to the government. If you are managing COVID-19 without government permission and we are not capturing you in our database, you are performing an illegal act according to the laws of Lagos State. Read more

LASU undergraduate arrested for child molestation in Lagos (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Adeyeye Oluwatosin, a Botany student of Lagos State University (LASU) seen kissing a minor in a viral video.

Adeyeye Oluwatosin who was arrested on Friday 5th May is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department for molesting his three-year-old step sister.

The incident was a learned incident that happened on Tuesday 2nd, June 2020 in their residence at Shagamu.

Confirming the arrest the spokesperson Lagos state police command DSP Bala Elkana said “the arrest was made after the attention of Lagos State Police Command was drawn to a viral video showing one Adeyeye Oluwatosin Babatunde of Kajola Street, Shagamu, Ogun State, a Botany student of Lagos State University, kissing his three years old step sister (name withheld). The Lagos State Government has revealed that if the state continues to record over 200 to 300 positive cases on a daily basis, it will soon run out of isolation centres. It added that with the increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases in the state, only moderate to severe cases will be managed at the isolation centers while the asymptomatic and mild cases will be managed at home. In a chat with journalists in the state on Friday, the Commissioner for health, Prof Akin Abayomi insisted the modalities for the community based/home-based care will be defined as to who qualifies to be managed at home and who will be managed at the isolation facility. He noted that if Lagos continues to record over 200 to 300 positive cases on a daily basis, the State will soon run out of isolation centers. Read more

All 57 members of the Buffalo Police Department’s Emergency Response Team have quit their unit in protest after two officers were suspended without pay over their unprovoked attack on an elderly peaceful protester.

The officers resigned from their positions en masse on Friday after their colleagues were suspended without pay the previous night as a “show of support and disgust,” local media reported. They have not quit the police department entirely, however.

The Erie County District Attorney is investigating an incident – caught on video – in which two members of the Emergency Response Team pushed a 75-year-old demonstrator to the ground in the process of clearing the area in front of the Buffalo City Hall. While they initially claimed the man fell, video later emerged showing the men shoving him without apparent provocation. Read more

NFL says players’ protests should now be allowed (BBC)

The National Football League has said players can now protest during the US national anthem, as rallies continue against police brutality and racism.

“We were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said.

The NFL had previously banned its players from dropping to one knee.

The U.S. city of Minneapolis agreed Friday to ban the police use of chokeholds after an African American man died in police custody, triggering nearly two weeks of protests across America.

City negotiators agreed with the state of Minnesota to ban chokeholds and require police to intervene and report any unauthorized use of force by another officer.

Coronavirus: Madagascar minister fired over $2m lollipop order (BBC)

Madagascar’s education minister has been fired over plans to order more than $2m (£1.6m) worth of sweets for schoolchildren.

Rijasoa Andriamanana said pupils would be given three lollipops each to mask the “bitter” aftertaste of an untested herbal remedy for coronavirus.

The plan was called off after objections from Madagascar’s president.

COVID-19: Neymar mistakenly approved for $120 welfare payment (Independent)

Superstar Neymar was mistakenly approved to receive a $120 (Dh440) welfare payment meant for low-paid Brazilian workers affected by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a report.

In an apparent case of identity theft, the Paris Saint-Germain star’s name, date of birth and Brazilian ID number were used to register for the payment from the federal government, news site UOL reported.

Michael Jordan says he will donate $100m (£78m) to groups fighting for racial equality and social justice.

The club agreed to mutually part ways with Katai, who had only made two appearances from the club since signing on December 31, during a meeting two days after being made aware of a now-deleted Instagram diatribe by his wife that they deemed “racist and violent”.
