JAMB shifts registration date for 2021 UTME, DE (Tribune)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has shifted the commencement of registration for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry to a later date.

Head, Public Affairs and Protocol of JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin, who made this known in a statement, on Thursday, in Abuja, said the registration exercise was speculated to have begun on April  8, 2021, explaining that this date was not realistic because some hitches.

Benjamin said the delay was caused by some unforeseen circumstances occasioned by the determined effort to have a National Identity Number (NIN) integration. Read more

Septuagenarian, 2 others nabbed for lynching burglar (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a septuagenarian, John Adeyemi, and two others, Sakariyau Biliaminu and Gabriel Ajayi, in connection with the death of a yet-to-be-identified burglar in the Ikotun area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the burglar broke into the house of one Adeyemi Opeyemi and while attempting to dispossess her of her valuables, the victim raised the alarm, which made the burglar to bolt away.

The burglar was said to have run into an angry mob, who apprehended and lynched him.

In a statement on Thursday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said three community leaders, Sakariyau Biliaminu, 66; John Adeyemi, 77; and Gabriel Ajayi, 55, were arrested and were being questioned in relation to the suspect’s killing. Read more

Lagos to collaborate with UFUK Dialogue to eradicate poverty (Tribune)

Lagos State government, on Thursday, stated its willingness to collaborate with the Ufuk Dialogue, in the eradication of poverty, ignorance and promote peaceful coexistence in the state.

Ufuk Dialogue is a non-governmental organisation with the mission of helping the needy in the country.

The deputy governor, Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, said this while receiving the management team of Ufuk Dialogue in his office in Alausa-Ikeja.

Hamzat, while emphasising the need for collaboration with the organisation, stated that such collaboration focused on three pillars which the group had already been executing in some states across the country, including Lagos State, namely; eliminating ignorance via the establishment of schools, offering free medical services and surgeries and promoting peace by establishing conflict resolution centres were highly commendable. LASUTH pencilled down for infrastructure overhaul (Punch)

The Lagos State Government said on Thursday that it will soon upgrade the infrastructure at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to a fit-for-purpose medical infrastructure.

It added that the move would enable the tertiary institution to focus on its core functions of training, academic research and providing highest level of medical intervention for complicated medical cases.

Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi who spoke after an inspection tour of facilities at LASUTH and the Lagos State College of Medicine said, “Historically, this is a colonial facility that was transformed from a general hospital into a teaching hospital. It was initially not designed for that purpose; it was acquired and the organisations here are doing the best they can to run it as a tertiary academic centre. Read more

Boy, 19, gets cash reward for returning researcher’s lost phone (Punch)

Nineteen-year-old Musa Ibrahim, a Senior Secondary School III student of the Abe Technical Secondary School, Odo-Ona Elewe, Ibadan, Oyo State, has been showered with cash gifts rolled for his act of honesty of returning a lost phone to the owner.

Musa was given the gifts by the Covenant Women of the New Covenant Church, Ibadan, led by Mrs Adeola Oduwole, a retired principal with the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission; the owner of the lost mobile phone, Mrs Adebisi Akinrinola; and a United Kingdom-based Nigerian philanthropist, who preferred anonymity.

Recalling how he came by the mobile phone, Musa, who is from a poor background, said, “It happened on the evening of Sunday, March 28, 2021. I saw the phone on the ground around ST, Apata, Iyana Odo-Ona Elewe. Some people around the place advised that I should wipe off the information on the phone and sell it.”

According to him, he initially yielded to the temptation to keep the phone to himself. Read more

Ex-militants on the rampage in Ondo, set 17 houses ablaze (Guardian)

Residents of Asere community in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State have decried attacks on their communities by alleged notorious gang of ex-militants, who terrorise and destroy their properties indiscriminately.

The victims, mainly women and children, protested in the community yesterday, appealing to the government and security agencies to nip the menace in the bud.

George Floyd died from lack of oxygen, not fentanyl, says expert (BBC)

George Floyd died from a lack of oxygen during his arrest, a doctor at the trial of ex-police officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis has said.

Contradicting the defence, Dr Martin Tobin said fentanyl did not cause Mr Floyd’s death. He said even a “healthy person…would have died”.

Mr Chauvin, 45, was filmed kneeling on Mr Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes during his arrest last May.

The ex-officer is on trial for murder and has denied the charges against him. Read more

One of UK’s richest men found stabbed to death in country mansion (Metro) 

One of Britain’s richest men has been found stabbed to death in his country mansion, it was revealed today. Sir Richard Lexington Sutton, an 83-year-old Baronet, was attacked inside his £2million home in north Dorset, last night. A woman in her 60s, believed to be his wife, also suffered knife injuries and was airlifted to Bristol’s Southmead Hospital in a ‘critical’ condition. Sir Richard was found with fatal knife wounds after a concerned member of the public raised the alarm about what was happening inside the home. Read more

At least 1 killed in Texas store shooting, suspected gunman in custody (RT)

One person was killed after a gunman went on a shooting rampage at a store in Bryan, Texas. The gunman is said to be an employee of the business. Four people have been critically injured in the incident.

Police responded to a shooting at the Kent Moore Cabinets store around 2:30pm local time on Thursday, Bryan police chief Eric Buske told reporters, adding that the suspect had fled the scene by the time officers arrived. One person was found dead of gunshot wounds, while five others were brought to hospital, four in critical condition and another who suffered an asthma attack but was not injured in the shooting.

Buske said police “believe” the suspect is in custody and that he is an employee at the store, but added that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) would have to confirm. A DPS trooper was later shot in nearby Iola while pursuing a suspect; the chief said it appears the two incidents are related. Read more

‘Satan Shoes’ to be recalled as Nike agrees to settle lawsuit (BBC)

Nike says the art collective which made “Satan Shoes” that purportedly contain a drop of human blood in the soles has agreed to issue a voluntary recall as part of a legal settlement.

The $1,018 (£740) trainers are modified Nike Air Max 97s. Only 666 pairs were made and all but one have been shipped.

The collective MSCHF will offer full refunds to customers in order to remove the shoes from circulation, Nike said.

The settlement resolves a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Nike. Read more
