JAMB to prosecute, withdraw result of Anambra candidate, gives reason (Tribune)

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has vowed to withdraw the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination result of Ejikeme Mmesoma over alleged manipulation of her scores.

Mmesoma is also to face prosecution for allegedly deceiving the public to fraudulently obtain scholarship and other recognitions.

Recall that Mmesoma, who claimed to have scored 362 in the 2023 UTME, was recently celebrated and awarded an N3 million scholarship by Innocent Chukwuma, Chairman of Innoson Vehicles Manufacturing Company. Read more

Absence of magistrate stalls Seun Kuti’s trial (Punch)

The absence of Chief Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun of the Yaba Magistrates’s court has further stalled the trial of Afrobeat Musician, Seun Kuti.

The registrar, Mr Babalola, in the absence of the chief Magistrate, Olatunbosun, adjourned the case till September 27, 2023, for the continuation of the proceeding.

Magistrate Olatunbosun was said to have resumed her administrative leave and was thus absent in court today. Read more

INEC fails to open defence in Obi, LP petition (Sun)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday failed to open its defence before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), in the petition filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Peter Obi.

Lead counsel to the electoral body, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), who blamed the development on the absence of its first witness, told the court that although his client plans to call three witnesses within three days, the one slated for today is unavailable because of some family issues.

The Commission consequently applied for an adjournment till Tuesday to enable the witness to attend court. Read more 

Tinubu meets Shell Upstream director, NNPC boss (Vanguard)

President Bola Tinubu has met with the Shell Global Upstream Director Ms Zoë Yujnovich at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari was also present at the meeting.

The meeting was Tinubu’s first official engagement after the Sallah festivities and his foreign trips to France on June 20 and London on June 24 respectively. Read more 

FCTA announces diphtheria outbreak in Abuja (Guardian)

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday announced that diphtheria, a serious and very contagious disease has broken out in Abuja. It has claimed one already.

The announcement was made at a press conference addressed by the director of public health, Dr. Sadiq Abdulraman.

He called on residents of the FCT to immediately take the vaccine (Pentavalent vaccine) to break the spread of the disease which he explained is an infection of the nose and throat that’s easily preventable by the vaccine. Read more 

8 kidnapped oil workers regain freedom (Sun)

The eight workers who were abducted by gunmen on Lagos waterway last week Monday have regained their freedom.

The MRS staff were released Sunday night after collecting the unspecified amount of ransom.

A senior police officer told Daily Sun that, “Yes, the kidnapped oil workers have been released. They were released yesterday night (Sunday). I was with them and they are in good condition”. Read more 

Heavy rainstorm destroys 100 houses in Kebbi (Leadership)

Heavy windstorm has destroyed over 100 houses in Zauro town of Birnin Kebbi local government area of Kebbi State.

According to one of the victims, Aliyu Tsoho, the strong wind and loud thunder also destroyed his house.

The Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other relevant authorities have undertaken an on-the-spot assessment and provided succour to those affected. Read more 

NAHCON: 13 Nigerians died during Hajj in Saudi Arabia (ThisDay)

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has said that 13 intending pilgrims from Nigeria lost their lives while performing the just concluded Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Head of the Medical Team of NAHCON, Dr. Usman Galadima, disclosed this to journalists Monday during the post Arafat briefing in Makkah with the Hajj stakeholders.

He said: “Seven of the victims died before Arafat, six died post Arafat (four in Arafat, two in Mina). Read more 

“Barbie” movie gets Vietnam ban over South China Sea map (BBC)

Vietnam has banned the upcoming “Barbie” film over a scene featuring a map depicting contested Chinese territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Vietnam is among a number of countries that contest China’s claim to almost all of the South China Sea.

The film about the famous doll, which has already taken over social media, is due to release in cinemas on 21 July. Read more

An alleged victim of Kevin Spacey’s described the Hollywood actor as a “slippery, snaky, difficult person” and told a police officer his sexual advances were “like he thought he could groom me”, a court has been told.

Footage of the interview with the man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – was shown to jurors at Southwark Crown Court in which he said he was “disgusted” with the alleged sexual assaults.

France protests appear to ease as mayors, crowds urge calm (Global)

Crowds gathered at town halls across France Monday in what French media are calling “anti-riot gatherings” to show solidarity with local governments targeted in six nights of unrest touched off by the police shooting of a 17-year-old.

The riots, which seemed to be easing overnight into Monday, were driven by a teenage backlash in the suburbs and urban housing projects against a French state that many young people with immigrant roots say routinely discriminates against them. In all, 99 town halls have been attacked in the violence, along with other public buildings, according to the Interior Ministry.

French President Emmanuel Macron was meeting Monday with mayors of 220 towns from across the country. Across France, 34 buildings were attacked overnight – many of them linked to the government -along with 297 vehicles. Read more

Sick of being ignored by far-away politicians, officials on Scotland’s remote Orkney Islands are mulling a drastic solution: rejoining Norway, the Scandinavian country that gave them away as a royal wedding dowry more than 550 years ago.

Orkney Islands Council is due to debate options for “alternative models of governance” on Tuesday, including exploring the “Nordic connections” of the archipelago, which lies about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of the Scottish mainland.

Council leader James Stockan said the islands have been failed by both the Scottish government, 300 miles (480 kilometers) to the south in Edinburgh, and the U.K. government in the even more distant London. Read more 

Nigerian defender Troost-Ekong joins PAOK of Greece from Watford (Guardian)

Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong has completed a summer transfer to PAOK Thessaloniki FC of Greece from English championship side Watford.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Monday disclosed that Troost-Ekong has joined PAOK on a permanent deal after putting pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Greek Super League club side.

“It is now over for Abdul Rahman Baba at Chelsea. Contract set to be terminated on mutual agreement and he is joining the Greek side, PAOK,” Romano said. Read more

Brighton sign Dutch goalkeeper Verbruggen from Anderlecht (France24)

Brighton announced the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht on Monday.

The 20-year-old will reportedly cost the Seagulls £16 million ($20 million) and has signed a five-year deal with the Premier League club.

Verbruggen was named player of the season at Anderlecht last season despite only breaking into the first team in December.

Wimbledon farce as leaf blowers used to dry court with Novak Djokovic issuing plea (Express)

Wimbledon had to improvise after a long delay in Novak Djokovic’s opening match with leaf blowers being brought out to Centre Court to help dry the grass. Djokovic was just about to wrap things up in the first set when he felt the court begin to get slippery under his footing.

He was able to finish his service match to take a 1-0 lead before they quickly exited the court with the roof being closed. The covers were brought out simultaneously while the roof was closed with play up all around the tournament suspended.

The roof was also closed on Court One for Iga Swiatek’s clash with Lin Zhu, but play was back underway sooner than Centre Court. Fans were left perplexed as Djokovic stood at the entrance of the player’s entrance with staff coming out onto the court to check the dampness of the grass. Read more
