Nigerian crossdresser, James Brown, has visited his colleague, Idris Okuneye, popularly called Bobrisky, at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos.

Bobrisky is currently serving a six-month prison sentence over abuse of the naira notes.

James Brown, who went alongside some other individuals, disclosed his visit in a post on his Instagram page on Friday. Read more 

Miserable minimum wage grave danger to workers, economy, NLC warns govs (NewTelegraph)

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has warned state governments to be careful what they wish for, as a miserable national minimum wage would portend grave danger to the economy of most states which were driven by workers’ wages.

The warning was contained in a statement signed by NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah on Saturday, in response to comments from the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) stating that states may have to borrow, exhaust their Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations in order to pay workers salaries every month.

The statement entitled “Save the Country from a Certain Death,” reminded the state Governors that the exchange rate was currently at N1,600 to $1 while inflation hovers at 33.7% (40% for food), thus putting the value of the minimum wage at $37.5 for a family of six. Read more

Former national vice chairman (North-West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Mohammed Lukman, has asked opposition parties and other critical stakeholders in the country to mobilise Nigerians towards dislodging the APC in 2027.

Lukman, a former Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), in a statement on Saturday, said pushing the APC out of power remains the only way to address the avalanche of challenges bedeviling the country.

He said defeating the APC in 2027 is possible if opposition parties and Nigerians unite, just like top politicians united and succeeded in pushing the military back to the barracks. Read more 

Machinery dealers condemn presence of fake parts in markets (ThisDay)

The President of Auto Spare Parts and Machinery Dealers Association (ASPAMDA), Trade Fair complex, Lagos, Hon. Ngozi Emechebe, has expressed worry over the sale and use of fake spare parts despite repeated warnings and actions.

He said the fake parts’ use had led to many avoidable fatal road traffic crashes in Nigeria, resulting in numerous deaths, serious injuries and loss of vehicles as well as goods.

Emechebe made the remarks recently in Lagos at the opening ceremony of the 2024 West Africa Automotive Show (WAAS) in Lagos. Read more

Cargo transport: Nigeria lost about N7b to labour’s 2-day strike — Agents (Tribune)

The Domestic Airports Cargo Agents Association (DACAA) has estimated that Nigeria lost about N7 billion in cargo transport during the organised labour’s two-day nationwide strike.

The strike was embarked on by Nigerian workers under the auspices of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NUC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on Monday and Tuesday.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DACAA,  Mr Ikpe Nkanang, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos. Read more 

Saraki hails Supreme Court verdict on Melrose case over Paris Club Fund (Vanguard)

President of the 8th Senate, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki has hailed the Supreme Court judgement, which overturned the Federal High Court’s 2018 decision regarding an alleged N3.5 billion fraud case against Melrose General Services Limited.

Saraki said the judgement vindicates his earlier stance that the case was politically motivated and a veiled attempt to witch-hunt him because he emerged as President of the Senate against the wishes of certain forces during the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The former Senate President stated this on Friday, June 7, in a statement signed by his Head of Media, Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu, and made available to newsmen in Abuja after the Supreme Court judgment. Read more 

PSC appoints Yahaya Abubakar as DIG, promotes 122 others (Channels)

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police, Yahaya Abubakar, as a Deputy Inspector General of Police.

A statement by the Head of Press and Public Relations of the Commission, Ikechukwu Ani, said Abubakar was until his appointment the AIG in charge of Zone 14 Katsina.

He will represent the North East Geopolitical Zone in the Police Management Team, replacing DIG Habu Sani, who recently retired as DIG Force Intelligence Bureau and represented the Zone. Read more

Killings: Senate mulls negotiation with bandits (Leadership)

Concerned about the escalating insecurity in the country’s North West and North Central zones, the Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu to set up a task force to evaluate the effectiveness and implications of negotiating with bandits.

This task force will thoroughly analyse the short-term gains versus the long-term consequences of such action, the Senate said.

Kelly Clarkson wins at 2024 Daytime Emmys (Billboard) 

The Kelly Clarkson Show won outstanding daytime talk series for the fourth consecutive year at the 2024 Daytime Emmys, which were held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles on Friday (June 7). Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner co-hosted the show, which was broadcast on CBS.

Kelly Clarkson has won eight Daytime Emmys over the course of the first five seasons of her popular talk show (compared to three Grammys over a much longer period of time). Impressively, she has won at least one Emmy in each of the five seasons.

In accepting the award for outstanding daytime talk series, Clarkson gave special thanks to NBC for listening to her concerns when she proposed moving the show from Los Angeles to New York. Read more

Mary Poppins, Bye Bye Birdie and The Dick Van Dyke Show legend Dick Van Dyke became the oldest Daytime Emmy Award winner in television history at a ceremony Friday night in Los Angeles.

The 98-year-old actor won the prize for Best Guest Performance on a Daytime Drama for his work on Days of Our Lives.

General Hospital was voted Best Drama and its cast member Robert Gossett Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. The soap opera also won Emmys for writing and directing. Read more

Strong plays the son of patriarchal media baron Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox), who competes with three equally power-hungry siblings for control over their family’s company as Roy announces his abdication.

Former astronaut William Anders, who took iconic Earthrise photo, killed in Washington plane crash

William Anders, the former Apollo 8 astronaut who took the iconic “Earthrise” photo showing the planet as a shadowed blue marble from space in 1968, was killed Friday when the plane he was piloting alone plummeted into the waters off the San Juan Islands in Washington state. He was 90.

His son, retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Greg Anders, confirmed the death to The Associated Press.

“The family is devastated,” he said. “He was a great pilot and we will miss him terribly.” Read more

Poland’s Iga Swiatek claimed her third consecutive French Open title by crushing Italian Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-1 in Saturday’s final.

Manchester City could turn the Premier League into the Scottish Premiership if they win their ATP legal battle, according to Graeme Souness.

It was revealed on Tuesday that City had launched ‘unprecedented legal action’ against the Premier League as they see themselves as victims of ‘discrimination’ because of the APT rules – what’s APT, you ask? – and that the ‘tyranny of the majority’ is attempting to halt their progress as a club.

Roglic wins stage to add to Criterium du Dauphine lead (BBC)

Primoz Roglic made back-to-back wins on stage seven of the Criterium du Dauphine to increase his overall lead heading into the final stage.

The Bora–Hansgrohe rider took the yellow jersey from Remco Evenepoel on Friday and is now 62 seconds clear after winning the summit finish at Samoens 1600.
