James Cameron has revealed that another Terminator film is currently “in discussion.”
The acclaimed filmmaker recently spoke on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, where talks about artificial intelligence got him onto the topic of a Terminator reboot.
He said: “If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy.”
While Cameron hasn’t directed a Terminator movie since the release of Terminator 2: Judgement Day back in 1991, he played a significant role in the attempts to revive the franchise with 2015’s Terminator: Genisys and 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, both of which underperformed at the box office.
Although Dark Fate got a better response than Genisys, which received poor feedback from both fans and critics, it only made $261.1 million worldwide.
Still, it appears that neither this nor the creative clashes that took place behind the scenes of Dark Fate are sufficient enough to discourage Cameron from continuing with his efforts to revive it.
Linda Hamilton, meanwhile, recently spoke about her time making Dark Fate and said she felt as though something was missing from it.
“I had an existential crisis on that film,” the actress, who starred as Sarah Connor, said in August. “[Filmmaker] Tim [Miller] would say, ‘I want her relatable’. And I would go back to my room and say, ‘Relatable? When was Sarah Connor ever relatable?’
“I love Tim. I love my ladies. But to me there was just something missing. It moved a little too fast. And there were so many beautiful moments that didn’t make it in. I’ll need to see it again, ten years from now, when I’ve stepped way, way back.” (DigitalSpy)
