A 42-year-old woman, Fatima Rahman, from Chad Republic has been remanded to the Ikoyi Custodial Centre for the alleged murder of her co-wife, Adizat, at her residence in Alejo Street, Ijede, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

Fatima was arraigned on Tuesday before Magistrate P. E Nwaka at a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba on one count of murder.

She was said to have been angry when she learnt that her husband had married another wife. Read more

Landlord charged with forceful eviction of tenant (DailyTrust)

A 68-year-old Lagos landlord has been arraigned before a Lagos chief magistrate’s court sitting in Badagry over alleged illegal eviction of one of his tenants, Felix Uche.

 The tenant had approached the court to seek redress after his landlord, Daudu, allegedly threw his property out of his apartment while he was at work.

 In his defense, the landlord claimed that he no longer wanted the complainant as his tenant over a yet to be ascertained reason.

The incident happened on April 19, 2023, at about 7am, at Eweh Close, Pako-Ketu, Ijanikin area of Lagos, where Uche rented the apartment. Read more 

Lagos releases details of 3 sex offenders (Channels)

The Lagos State Government has published the details of three adult males convicted for different sexual offences in the state.

In a tweet on Monday, the State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency identified the sex offenders as Idowu Daniel, Moses Olawale and Akin Isaac.

Their identities were made known via the official Twitter handle of the state Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, @Lagosdsva. Read more

Rivers Visit: I’ll not marginalise any part of Nigeria — Tinubu (Tribune)

Ahead of May 29 Swearing-in ceremony, President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised that his administration will not marginalise but work with every part of the country in areas of development.

The president-elect, who is on a two-day visit to the state to inaugurate projects executed by the Governor Nyesom Wike administration, made the pledge on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. 

According to a statement released by Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, from the office of the President-elect, Tinubu made the promise at the opening of Rumuokwuta/Rumuola Flyover Bridge. Read more 

FG approves Nat’l Blockchain Policy (Vanguard)

The Federal Government, Wednesday, approved a national blockchain policy.

Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, disclosed this after the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Pantami said the new policy was a product of consultations with 56 institutions and personalities whose end goal is to institutionalise blockchain technology in Nigeria’s economy and security sectors. Read more 

Wike man of character, integrity – Tinubu (Independent)

President-elect, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu has described the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike as a man of character and integrity who stood his ground in the countdown to the 2023 general elections that power must return to the southern part of Nigeria.

Tinubu who is in Rivers on a two-day visit to commission some key projects thanked Wike for his contributions to his emergence as the President-elect, saying that he couldn’t have been victorious at the poll without the structural contribution of Wike.

The President-elect said there was so much gossip and conspiracy (against Governor Wike) “but you stood your ground. It is on the strength of your character that I stand here to fulfill the promise I made during my campaigns.” Read more

Ekweremadu: Abike Dabiri pleads with UK government to show mercy (Guardian)

The chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa has made a plea to the United Kingdom (UK) government to show leniency with former Nigeria Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

Ekweremadu is currently awaiting the verdict of the court on the allegation of organ harvesting made against him.

Dabiri-Erewa in an official statement on Wednesday signed by the NIDCOM spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun joined others in pleading with the UK government to temper justice with mercy as regards Ekweremadu. Read more

Lawmakers disagree over impeachment of Abia Speaker (DailyTrust)

Lawmakers in the Abia State House of Assembly have disagreed over the impeachment of the Speaker, Hon. Chinedum Orji.

The impeachment was carried out on Tuesday by 18 out of 27 members of the Assembly who sat at an undisclosed location.

The lawmakers are accusing the Speaker of gross misconduct and highhandedness.

But in an interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise, Hon. Jerry Uzosike, a member in the Assembly and Ifeanyi Uchendu, a former Deputy Speaker of the Assembly disagreed over the impeachment saga. Read more

Jock Zonfrillo family backs MasterChef Australia broadcast return (Variety)

Jock Zonfrillo, the colorful and controversial chef and TV personality who died suddenly on Sunday, is to be honored on air with twin broadcasts this weekend on Australia’s Network Ten.

A new season of MasterChef, the reality TV show on which Zonfrillo was a judge, will now launch on Sunday evening, the broadcaster said on Wednesday. The show was due to have begun airing on Monday, but transmission was postponed as news of Zonfrillo’s sudden death was digested by the industry and public. The network said that it had the Zonfrillo family’s blessing for the move.

“With the full support of Jock Zonfrillo’s family, MasterChef Australia will air at 7.30pm on Sunday, 7 May,” Network Ten said in a statement. Read more

The Night Agent dropped out of the top three on Netflix’s list of most popular English-language TV shows for the week of April 24 to April 30. Meanwhile, The Diplomat held onto its crown.

The Diplomat ranked as no. 1 for the second week in a row with 66.46m viewing hours, which is up fairly significantly from its premiere week viewership.

Season 2 of Sweet Tooth took second place with 48.34m hours viewed. The debut of the second season, which hit Netflix on April 27, also boosted season 1 back into the top 10 at no. 6. Cannes: Michael Douglas to receive honorary Palme d’Or (THR)

Wall Street, Basic Instinct and Fatal Attraction star Michael Douglas will receive an honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Michael Douglas will receive the Palme d’or d’honneur at the opening ceremony for the 76th Festival de Cannes on May 16, where the festival will pay tribute to his “brilliant career [and] his engagement for cinema.”

Douglas first appeared on Cannes’ legendary red carpet steps in 1979, together with Jane Fonda, Jack Lemmon, and director James Bridges, for the premiere of The China Syndrome. Read more

Kremlin drone attack: Russia accuses Ukraine of trying to assassinate Putin (BBC)

Russia says it downed two drones that targeted the Kremlin in Moscow last night and accused Ukraine of attempting to kill President Vladimir Putin.

Unverified footage on social media appeared to show an object flying over the Kremlin before a small explosion.

Ukraine said it had nothing to do with the drone strike.

President Volodymyr Zelensky’s spokesman said Ukraine was focusing on liberating its own territory after Russia invaded last year. Read more

Rivers United will play more matches in the run-in to the end of the regular season of the 2022/23 abridged season, due to their accumulated outstanding fixtures as a result of their involvement in this year’s CAF Confederation Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo has become the world’s highest-paid athlete for the first time since 2017 after his move to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr nearly doubled his annual playing salary, while Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) duo Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe round off the top three, according to Forbes magazine.

Ronaldo, who joined the Saudi football club on a deal until 2025 after leaving Manchester United last year, earned $136m, with Forbes saying his annual playing salary went up to an estimated $75m.

The 29-year-old from Yaoundé, Cameroon, averaged 33.1 points to win his second straight scoring title, averaged 10.2 rebounds and tied a career high with 4.2 assists per game.

Embiid played in 66 games, the second-highest total of his career, but again has been hit with injuries in the playoffs. Embiid has been sidelined with a sprained right knee that cost him one game of the playoff sweep against Brooklyn and the opening game of the Eastern Conference semifinals against Boston which was won by Philadelphia on Monday night.
