JOHESU suspends warning strike (Nation)

The National Executive Council of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) have announced the suspension of its seven – day warning strike which commenced on Oct 26, 2024. 

The unions announced the suspension in a communique at the end of its National Executive Council meeting on Thursday. 

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the JOHESU team and the Federal Government team during the conciliation meeting on Tuesday at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Federal Secretariat, Abuja. Read more

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has clarified that it has no direct business dealings with the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) regarding the purchase of refined petroleum products.

In a press statement released on their X handle on Thursday, the refinery clarified that while discussions with IPMAN are ongoing, any claims regarding difficulties experienced by IPMAN members in loading products from its facilities are misleading.

According to the refinery, all payments for refined products have been processed through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), with no transactions directly involving IPMAN. Furthermore, NNPCL has not authorized the release of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from Dangote Refinery to IPMAN. Read more

Lagos woman bites off neighbour’s tongue during fight over bucket (Punch)

Residents of Aribisala Street in the Igando area of Lagos State were thrown into confusion on Thursday after a woman identified simply as Fatima allegedly cut off the tongue of her neighbour, Mitsura.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened while the duo was doing laundry on the premises where they live.

Trouble was said to have started when Fatima who is in her early thirties allegedly accused Mitsura of using her bucket without taking permission from her. Read more

Court jails 2 men 7 years for trafficking in Indian Hemp (Vanguard)

A Federal High Court, sitting in Lagos, has convicted and sentenced two men, Abbah Yahaya and Abbah Abdullahi, to a total of seven years for trafficking 104 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, popularly called Marijuana.

The two convicts had pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiracy and trafficking the said prohibited weed, when they were arraigned before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in a charge marked FHC/L/748c/2024, on October 15.

Following their guilty plea, the prosecutor, Julie Negedu, review the fact of the case through an operative of the NDLEA, Tanyishi Simon, who tendered some exhibits, which include the convicts’ confessional statements, certificate of test analysis, packing of substance form, request for scientific aid form, large sealed brown envelope and drug analysis report, which were admitted and marked as Exhibit A to G series.

The Minister of Works, Sen Dave Umahi, has said the current administration met over 2,000 incomplete road projects running into trillions of Naira.

The minister said his ministry was unafraid to make big decisions and had wielded the big stick by terminating 10 contracts with erring companies.

Mr Umahi said this on Thursday in Akure during the Federal Ministry of Works Town Hall meeting/stakeholders’ engagement on the alignment of the Ondo State with the 63km segment of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway.

10 dead, 7 injured in Oyo building collapse (Channels)

Ten bodies have been recovered from the debris of a collapsed storey building at Jegede in the Olunloyo area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. 

Some persons were also confirmed injured in the collapse that took place in the Oyo State capital on Thursday.

The General Manager of Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, in a statement, noted that the Service got a distress call around 2 am from residents of the area that a building had collapsed trapping many under the rubble. Read more 

Forex: FG gives 9 months grace to those keeping dollars outside banking system (Vanguard)

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun has disclosed a new government policy that would permit Nigerians who are keeping dollars outside the banking system to bring those funds into the financial system.

Edun, said such individuals have a nine-month grace period to comply with the directive without attracting legal liability or financial penalties.

UN says 1 child a day killed in Israel’s war on Lebanon in past month (AlJazeera)

The United Nations children’s agency says at least one child a day has been killed in Lebanon over the past month as Israel intensifies its bombing campaign.

“Since October 4 of this year, at least one child has been killed and 10 injured daily,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said on Thursday and added that “the ongoing war in Lebanon is upending children’s lives.”

The UN agency said “thousands more children who have survived the many months of constant bombings physically unscathed are now acutely distressed by the violence and chaos around them.” Read more

Germany closes 3 Iranian consulates following Iran’s execution of German Iranian national (VOA)

Germany will close three Iranian consulates in response to Iran’s announcement of the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a German Iranian national and a U.S. resident, earlier this week.

“We have repeatedly and unequivocally made it clear to Tehran that the execution of a German citizen will have serious consequences,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Thursday in announcing the closure of the consulates in Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg.

Germany will allow Iran’s embassy in Berlin to remain open. And Germany will “continue to maintain our diplomatic channels and our embassy in Tehran,” Baerbock said. Read more

Atlanta rap star Young Thug agreed to change his plea to guilty Thursday in Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, a stunning turn that would bring his high-profile case to a close, pending a judge’s approval.

The plea change announced in Fulton County court for the rapper, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams, appeared on the brink of not happening after Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker asked if he agreed to a non-negotiated plea. That means prosecutors and the defense could not come to a negotiated sentencing deal, and that the judge still ultimately decides his punishment.

Fifa in dispute with Adidas and Coca-Cola over Club World Cup sponsorship (Guardian)

Fifa is in dispute with its long-term partners Adidas and Coca-Cola over sponsorship rights for the Club World Cup next year in the US. Separate cases have been lodged at the Swiss Arbitration Centre in Zurich and are expected to be heard in the coming weeks, the Guardian understands.

Fifa has announced only one sponsor for a tournament that will feature 32 clubs in an expanded format backed heavily by its president, Gianni Infantino. That is believed to relate to disputes with Adidas and Coca-Cola over an agreement in their deals that Fifa will include them as official sponsors of all its competitions.

Sources have told the Guardian that both companies are “less than thrilled with the situation” after Fifa attempted to negotiate new contracts for the revamped Club World Cup. Adidas and Coca-Cola signed deals to 2030 thought to be worth about $70m for each four-year cycle and are believed to have been unwilling to enter a tender process.
